I ran Norton Disk Doctor (NDD) and fixed the MDB problem, recopied
and reconfigured AutoShare 4.2 all over again, and rebuilt the
desktop database (using TechTool) and now everything runs like a
charm!... Basic Mac troubleshooting stuff that I should have known!

My initial problems I think were caused by the desktop database being
corrupt. I didn't realize that the desktop database could cause such
big problems. I guess I never figured the desktop database which
usually affects things like icons and the proper launching of
applications from files would affect the timing of AutoShare
processing files in the Filed Mail folder.

Anyway, now I know and I'm glad it's all resolved and I'm now running
the latest AutoShare version and all the Admin functions work.

Thanks again, Mikael, for everything! AutoShare is awesome!!

Cheers,
Derek

Subject: remote admin with 4.2

Howdy,

I just did the update to 4.2 and now all lists refuse to work with remote administration via mail.

Autoshare returns the mails with:

Invalid list server command: <mypassword>

Is there a way I can get the remote password to be recognized again?

I'm sorry - just read the docs and found the note myself - shame on me ;(

I have just started using "Autoshare" and am having problems using "Web
Forms" to (un)subscribe to, or modify, lists. I used the samples given with
the program and modified them to address my server and lists. However, when
the browser sends the form (IE5.0) the Autoshare server just ignores the
email. I have had no problems send "(un)subscribe" commands via email
programs...the server handles them just fine. Ideas...suggestions?

I have just started using "Autoshare" and am having problems using "Web

Looks like Eldridge should be using Autoshare to serve his vacation
autoresponses! Maybe Autoshare needs a filter for 'stupid' vacation response
generators...

There is a process extender sample of type Before Processing entitled
Mail Loop, which addresses this (I don't think Randy has it installed
though). Maybe it'll be a built-in feature one day.

You're using a mailto: form action, I take it? IE 5.0 may have
changed the way the fields are presented in the e-mail body. I'll
look into it. If you happen to have the message file in the Filed
Mail folder, I would like to see it.

From: Chris Moffatt <chris at kayano dot com>

understand the documentation, yet, Is it possible to set all list options
via email like you can with AppleScript????

Just Say I wanted to change the Prefix of the subject and the Web path via

The commands offered by remote administration by e-mail are
restricted to relatively few tasks. The main listmaster can however
use the script command to mail a text script that will be compiled
and executed by AutoShare, which is very powerful stuff. The
following shows a sample body of such an e-mail.

rosebud script
tell application "AutoShare"
SetList Options {List:"fun-l", Subject Prefix:"[a]", Web Path:"disk:folder:"}
end tell

This is essentially AppleScript via e-mail.

I have been getting a error message whenever I try to make changes to
the preferences using AutoShare Admin. The message I get, for
example, for the subscriber command is: An error occurred while
excuting the script window "Subscriber". No result was returned from
some part of the expression. (-2763).

Any idea what the problem might be?

What happens if you go into the Script Editor and run something like

tell application "AutoShare"
   SetMisc Options {Log:Brief Log}
end tell

I currently use autoshare for various things and was wanting to know if
there is a way I can pick up a message from one mailbox, alter a header
(i.e. leave the _name_ but alter the email address in a From: header),
and then have it forwarded to another EIMS account on the same server.
Point is to protect the privacy of the original sender email address in
the futher processing of the message.

That should be possible by means of a process extender, which
requires knowledge of AppleScript. It should be of type Before
Processing, so when AutoShare first sees the message file in the
Filed Mail folder, you as the scripter get a first shot at it. For
altering the email address, you can use the GetRFC and SetRFC
AppleScript commands to obtain and change respectively the RFC header
field body. And for the forwarding, you would likely need to change
both the RFC To header and the SMTP envelope recipient; you can use
the SetRes command for the latter. Once you're done, move the message
file out of the Filed Mail folder, so AutoShare does no further
processing.

When all is said and done though, it's a pretty sticky issue. One
thing is that you want to test the above carefully to make sure it
works as intended. Another thing is that the sender may have entered
his e-mail address in the signature at the end of the body. Yet
another thing is that changing an e-mail's sender address is best
done in combination with being upfront about why it's being done to
whom it may concern; a suggestion is for your script to insert a
special RFC field in the updated message briefly stating the change.

The purpose is for privacy on a mailing list discussion group. I am using
autoshare for many things but using letterrip for discussion groups and
want to filter the message before it is processed by letterrip. If
someone chooses to put their address in the body of the message that is
their decision. This policy would be stated in the list info as well as
the reasons for it. Unfortunately these days you have relatively little
control over who chooses to archive your lists and make them publicly
available (apart from legal action). I do not want my subscribers subject
to address harvesting or harassment by those with opposing viewpoints. I
have experienced both problems on lists I have run in the past.

I probably should have also mentioned another issue which will clarify
why I need autoshare to intervene. Letterrip allows me to replace any
header with whatever I wish to put in there. So I could actually replace
the entire From header with something such as "From: List Subscriber,
listsubscriber@mydomain dot com" . However Letterrip has a all or nothing
approach to the header, I cannot remove/alter the email address _and_
retain the name in the from field. While this would be OK, it is a
problem with people who use attribution lines in replies to the list
because they all would read something such as "On 6/28/00 List Subscriber
said:". I would like a method that retains the name of the poster but
removes or alters their email address for privacy. If they wanted to be
contacted off list they could put their address in the body of the message.

Subject: Autoshare subscription problem...

I'm going a little crazy here.

I've had Autoshare up and running healthily for a couple of years now.
Dunno what version I started at, but I'm at 4.2 now. All lists (up
to this point) have been directly administered via Autoshare Admin
on the listserver machine... and all has been well.

I'm trying to set up a list whereby folks can actually subscribe by
email. (Yeah, I know, that's supposed to be the way it ALWAYS works.)

If a message is sent to autoshare at bungie dot org, with the body set to

   subscribe listname FirstName LastName

I get back a nice message saying "Welcome to the list!"... but I'm
not subscribed. :( A subsequent "review" message returns

The subscribers to the list are:

ma-dev: Not subscribed in the first place

Now, here's where it gets weird.

- Autoshare Admin works fine on this list. (That is, if I add a subscriber
   via Admin, they're subscribed.)

- Remote admin works fine on this list. (That is, a message with the body

[password] sub email@machine listname FirstName LastName

   works just fine)

- The autoshare.cgi script included in the Samples folder (which SEEMS to
work exactly like the Admin app) DOES NOT WORK. It returns the proper
string on the web page... and sends out a subscription notice to the user...
but no subscriber is actually added to the list. (Yes, I added the included
OSAX to my Scripting Additions folder.)

Is there anything obvious I'm doing wrong? Has anyone seen a situation where
the above combination of works/doesn't work scenarios plays out?

Thanks for any help,

I set up a list that redistributs attachments. Unfortunately if an

Yes, it is correct that this may sometimes happen with attachments.

Subject: 4.2.1d3

Inspired by recent requests, 4.2.1d3 offers support for the email
field in subscriber web forms using mailto actions, which formerly
was only possible in administrator web forms. This way the email
field overrides the sender e-mail address configured in your web
browser.

I have been tentative about this, because anyone can then subscribe
and unsubscribe anyone else, which may be good, but often may be bad.
It is also an unsettled issue because if you enable mail-backs for
security, you're right back in the e-mail world and as such not just
using a web form.

Anyway, here it is. Add the letter Y to allow the email field to be
used when it is there and there is no password field.

"Always" logs only what must always be logged. I recommend "Brief".
These log modes have an impact on the log body and thereby also on
the summary, aka the log totals. If you are not interested in the log
body, but would like the log totals to reflect a Brief log body, let

to hard bounces:
1) no unsubscribed (hard bounce) messages from AutoShare which would

2) the Autoshare reports for that list don't give the information

Is there anything that changed in version 4.2 in this context ?
