Apparently the message sent back by the user is interpreted as a command
rather than as a confirmation. Since the code is in the subject line, I
tell the users that they can simply delete the body of the reply and just
send back the reply subject (with the code); AutoShare is interpreting
this as a blank command message.

Subject: attachments and stray LF characters (newbie)
I am using Autoshare 4.2.1 with EIMS 3.03 to do two vacation message
like things:
1) It is replying with a bounce to the sender
2) It is forwarding the incoming message to a new user. The Default
document looks like this:
[This is an automated reply]
--------------------------------------------
The domain name has changed.
The email you sent to
istest at olddomain dot com
should now be sent to
istest at newdomain dot com
Your message has been forwarded to the new address.
***YOU DO NOT NEED TO SEND YOUR EMAIL AGAIN!***
-------------------------------------------------
/=redirect istest at newdomain dot com
Here are the results:
1) incoming attachments are being mangled. They seem to be coming to
the new domain un-encoded.
2) odd line breaks are being inserted, so that the email alternates
text and blank lines
3) the outgoing mail que is backing up for that domain until I
explicitly send it with EIMS Admin.
Why is this happening? It must be a misconfiguration on my end, but I
can't figure out what it is.
Thanks for your help,
tucker

I need to see the message file in the Filed Mail folder and the two
message files having been processed. Quit AutoShare, send a test
e-mail, drag a copy out of the Filed Mail folder, quit the mail
server, start up AutoShare, drag copies of the two processed files
out of the Incoming Mail folder, start up the mail server. Put the
three files in a folder, StuffIt the folder and send it to me at
meh at dnai dot com, at which time I can look into it.

I have had a number of problems with messages sent to a list with a
request for a return receipt. I am not sure what is happening, but I
think several subscribers have been dropped from the list when their ISP
detected the return receipt request as a request for a relay. Is there
any way to deal with this on the Autoshare end?

we are trying to use a web form for people to sign up to a list on
our listserver. We are running EIMS 2.2.2 on a G3, and the latest
version of Autoshare (4.2.1, I believe).
Is there a way to use the mailto action, but have people enter their
email address, and it not take it from the browser preferences?
Thanks./

Okay... we looked... but didn't find it.
Here is a copy of the HTML we want on our page:
<FORM action="mailto:autoshare@bowesnet dot com" method=post>

<OPTION>unsubscribe
</SELECT></CENTER>
<P><CENTER><INPUT TYPE="submit" NAME="submit"
VALUE="mail this form"></CENTER>
</FORM>
we tried that, but its still taking the email address from the
browser settings...

Add the letter Y to the Misc Stuff field, which allows use of the
e-mail field without the password field; when there is no e-mail
field or it's blank, the From address is used.
(But yes, a CGI is likely better with forms.)

Yes, what you have on your subscription page is exactly what we want.

Subject: Problem with long RFC header
Hello,
I am running AutoShare 4.2.1 with SIMS 1.8b8.
I am having a problem with mail from Outlook Express,
which has a long "References" RFC header.
When mail with a long references was processed by AutoShare,
the references header got split into more than two
by "Message-id" and "Date" headers and blank lines.
Here is an example.
References: <011563370190849726934 at hige.chem.cornell dot edu>

edu>
This results in nothing being shown in subject field on mailers
even though these is a "subject" RFC header,
since the "subject" is in the header after the blank lines,
which appeared as body text on mailers.
A friend of mine has pointed out that if the references header
gets longer than 255 bytes, this problem seems to happen.
Is there any way to eliminate this?
Many thanks in advance.

OE shouldn't be doing this; the RFCs say to break a long RFC header
field into multiple lines, each having a length of 80 or so. The
Internet community can be somewhat forgiving, e.g. +50%, and I'm fine
with that.

That's correct. (Header field, not header. An e-mail message has one
RFC header, each having a number of fields; each field has a field
header and a field body, which means that you may come across a term
such as RFC header field header!)

Subject: SetRes AppleScript command or the Admin's Resource window
Hi,
I would like to have pre-defined key strings attached to a poll.
In the HTML manual I read the following:
A set of pre-defined key strings may be attached to a poll. When an invalid
key string is encountered, AutoShare returns a note to the sender asking
for another try.
The series of case-insensitive key strings resides in the 'STR ' resource,
beginning at 1001 and upwards, of the poll file in question; you can use
the SetRes AppleScript command or the Admin's Resource window to
configure this.
I have looked in the Admin's Resource window but don't know what to
put in the various fields.
In case I would have a poll under "adomain.com" what needs to be put
in these fields if the pre-defined strings would be "yes" and "no"?
File:
ID:
Index:
String:
checkbox use 'STR':
I do know there is a SetRes applescript (HTML manual) to accomplish
the same but even then, one needs to know what to put in.
Because it is not something to experiment with, I would like some help.
If I get the chance to get the right data to put in the fields once,
I am sure I will not bother you again in the future with this kind of
stuff.
It would set me on the right way to understand the SetRes and GetRes stuff.
TIA,

Subject: Tokens in Poll documents
Hi,
Why doesn't it help to put a file "footer.Poll or header.Poll" in the
AutoShare folder of the Docs folder of the domain specific Auto
folder running the poll?
I have also tried to put a token in the poll documents via the
Admin/Configuration/Documents but there is not an option to insert a
footer token (/=footer).
There is an option for header (/=header) but that doesn't help either
(if I put a header file in the Docs/AutoShare folder)
Meanwhile what is the function of the token /=hdr and /=body ? (not
in the html manual) ?
BTW, is there anyone out there running AutoShare 4.2.2b1 who noticed
very weird behaviour with the "vacation account" and/or the "poll
account" ?

I've verified the path to the web directory for each list, and I've

Any ideas?

If you are using WebStar before version 4, it is a known bug. Basically,
you have to turn it on every time WebStar starts. There is an AppleScript
on their web site to do this, but it does not work with OS9. I wrote a
very simple one which does work on OS 9. Let me know if you want it.

I was unsuccessful with WebStar. I'm using Autoshare with
EIMS. Everything works fine, including digests, except for the web
archives. There's just no files being generated in there. I haven't a
clue why.

For 'STR ' resources, you would use the ID field for "1001 and
upwards"; the Index field is also used for 'STR#', but not for 'STR
". This is very much like EIMS message files (whether used with EIMS
or SIMS).

As far as I remember, /= tokens are not supported in poll documents
at this time.

The standard archives have the HTML archives enabled?

AutoShare will create (or not create) the web archives regardless of
which web server you use; AutoShare simply writes to files and does
not interact with the web server as such.

That much I knew. It used to work, and then when I went in and
manually deleted some addresses, it quit working. Are there control
characters that have to be in there? Or does it just have to be tab

As far as the length of each line in the references header field is concerned,
OE is doing ok (the length of each line is less than 80).
What OE doing is to keep adding "references" to the reference header field.
When the total length of reference header field gets longer than 255 bytes,
the problem happens.
So, I would really appreciate if you could raise this limit in the future
version.

Thank you for your explaination but I am afraid it doesn't help very much.
Maybe I am just not smart enough.
I will try to forget these SetRes, GetRes, STR resources till the day
I am old enough to understand.

After the "bounce" address receiving the message:

The memory was boosted to 4MB for AutoShare, but with 5100
subscribers there is still no message being distributed to the list
subscribers. A distribution worked with the test environment of 5
subscribers.
Why is this still not working? Any clues will help.

Actually OE is not doing okay. You can tell because additional lines
for the field are not indented in your example.

I would recommend spending an idle moment on ResEdit.
<ftp://ftp.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/Utilities/ResEdit_2
Drag an EIMS message file onto the ResEdit icon. Once ResEdit has
started up and opened the message file, you should see at least two
icons in a window, one named 'STR#' and another one named 'STR '.
When you click on one and then the other, you'll see that a 'STR '
resource contains one string per ID. When on the other hand you look
at the 'STR#" resource, you'll see that each ID may contain not one,
but several strings, each having an index number. The AutoShare Admin
resource window merely refers to this structure.

That's because your list is not sorted properly (perhaps because it
was edited manually). Quit AutoShare, increase the preferred memory
significantly, start up AutoShare. If you see no "not sorted" errors
at start-up, quit AutoShare, reset the preferred memory size to
normal, restart AutoShare.

To take the latter first, name-of-list.m and name-of-list.d are
automatically created or updated whenever a list contribution takes place.
As far as name-of-list is concerned, its existence in the List Server
pretty much constitutes a valid list. If you simply drop such a list file
into that folder, I recommend you do it when AutoShare is not running, so
the internal prefs for the list can be created when she starts up; if I
remember correctly, all that is attended to if you use the Admin to create
a new list.

You're correct, but the distinction between "header" and "header
field" has become very fuzzy. It's now common in the IETF email
community to use "header" to refer to a header field. Oh well.

Subject: New Autoshare User - Help please
Hi everyone,
Excuse the questions, but I have just downloaded Autoshare because
of a suggestion on the SIMS mailing list. I have a specific use for
Autshar, so I'll describe it & see what the answers come back as.
SIMS is a great mail server, but it doesn't handle multiple domains
in the way I'd like it to. I was using Tenon's NetTen mail server, but
couldn't stop spam relaying, so moved to SIMS which was a snapp to stop
relaying.
I have a couple of domains registered on our server at the moment,
the first being heard.com.au & the second being
computertrainingcentre.com.au which belongs to someone else.
Basically, I have auto-replying for numeorus accounts on the
heard.com.au domain working fine, so if someone emails say -
george at heard.com dot au & I have auto-reply set for that account, they get an
immediate reply back addressed from george at heard.com dot au - that's fine,
working as expected.
However, my big problem is that there are 2 addresses which need
auto-replying on the computertrainingcentre.com.au domain which are:
info at computertrainingcentre.com dot au &
ctc at computertrainingcentre.com dot au
I set up auto-replying on SIMS for these accounts & they reply back
with the address of info at heard.com.au & ctc at heard dot com dot au which is wrong.
Could someone tell me the quickest way of getting these (& other)
auto replies working so they ato-reply with the correct address please?
I really appreciate any help that people can give me on this.
Bye for now, Terry Allen

Yes, this apparently is a SIMS bug.

If you have a good understanding of the various SIMS account types
such as Folder Only and you also don't mind using aliases in Finder,
it is likely to come quickly. My suggestion would be to glance through
Using AutoShare with SIMS
<http://www.dnai.com/~meh/autoshare/sims/>
Quick Tutorial for AutoShare
<http://www.dnai.com/~meh/autoshare/documentation/#quicktutorial>
The basic mechanism in AutoShare is simple. A mail is sent to the
mail server, e.g. SIMS, and SIMS saves that mail as a message file in
a folder. AutoShare picks up the message file, processes it and puts
the processed message file in another folder. SIMS picks it up and
mails it.
When you first install AutoShare after having downloaded and
unstuffed the AutoShare archive file, it is my recommendation that
you create a folder for the AutoShare application and a folder for
the AutoShare data; with respect to the latter, the AutoShare archive
includes a sample folder entitled Auto, which I suggest you put in
the hard disk's root folder.
You then start up the AutoShare application, select Preferences ->
Miscellaneous (Command-M) and enter the admin and bounce e-mail
addresses, which can both be your e-mail address for now. Once you
have clicked the OK button, select Preferences -> Folders (Command-F)
and use the Select buttons to enter paths for the folders inside the
Auto folder; set the Incoming Mail folder to the SIMS Submitted
folder; then click the OK button.
The fun can begin. Inside the Auto folder's Documents folder is an
AutoReply folder, which is your way of telling AutoShare what to do
with mails sent to autoreply@<domain>. The Default document inside
the AutoReply folder attends to mails with nothing particular in the
subject line and outlines the body of the autoreply mail.
Per the Using AutoShare with SIMS guide, a SIMS account of type
Folder Only and entitled AutoReply can then be created, so SIMS can
put message files in AutoShare's Filed Mail folder.
Send a mail to autoreply@<domain>. If all is well, SIMS receives the
mail, puts it in the Filed Mail folder, AutoShare processes it and
puts the autoreply mail in the Submitted folder, SIMS sends it to the
person who sent the original mail.
Time for me to go back to sleep :-)

I can certainly add something like this to test bounce messages. N is
easy. M is more difficult, as it is within a min/max window given the
ratio of bounces. X depends on M.

It doesn't have to be N of M. Anything that gives an idea of what
the status is. Perhaps something like "This is test bounce n.
Currently m test bounces have been sent, of which y have been
returned (x% failure)."

Hi again,
Just a quick addition to the above - does Autoshare auto-reply
using individually worded replies or is it one auto-reply for all accounts?
Bear in mind that I haven't even installed Autoshare as yet, but
I'd like to be armed with all the info before I start.

Hi Mikael,
Many thanks for your reply. I have yet to install Autoshare, but as
soon as I have, I'll let you know what the results are. Thanks also for the
excellent piece of software. I may now even set something up to run mailing
lists, which I never really had any use for before. I've been using Eudora
for years to send mailing list stuff out.
There are some great pieces of software out there contributed by
people like yourself. Apart from SIMS, the one that springs to mind
immediately is Yves Piquet's exceptional application clip2gif, which I've
been using for many years.
As a non-profit organisation, it's great to be able to get software
of this quality for little or no outlay, which frees our resources up to do
other things.

Version 4.2.2 is available from
the AutoShare home page at

and AutoShare @home
<http://members.home.net/autoshare/>
With respect to Mac OS X, the AutoShare code (apart from a few
optional places) compiles nicely at this time, which means that the
AutoShare code has been carbonized. The code doesn't link though,
which means that there is no AutoShare Carbon application available
for the time being, so I'm going to upgrade my programming software,
which is where I'll be spending my time for the next some weeks.
Anyway, 4.2.2 is otherwise about minor improvements and bug fixes,
and I would like to thank you for the feedback that I have received
on and off the list. It has sometimes been more than I have had the
time for (the year's first quarter often translates into being under
the weather), but it is nevertheless appreciated.

The former. You can create as many AutoReply-like folders (and

Hi again,
Have now downloaded Autoshare 4.2.2, which I'll install instead of
the version I had already downloaded.
A question came to mind when setting it up with SIMS - I'll outline
the details of how I have SIMS set up for the auto-replies currently.
I have a small number of accounts set up on SIMS which I have set
to auto-reply & forward to another server. On these accounts, I have SIMS
set to 'Discard Mail' & 'Mirror To List' (i.e. forward to another address)
The question related to this is: do I need to disable these options
in SIMS when using Autoshare or does Autoshare take care of this without
any need to modify SIMS.

Subject: mailing lists for dummies
Hi,
I'm such a newbie that I first thought Autoshare would take care of
all I needed to set up a mailing list. Or maybe I have that much
faith in the Mac OS and its programmers.
At any rate, I've spent more than a few hours now reading a variety
manuals and demi-FAQs and I'm still not getting the big picture in
terms of what software I need to make my project happen. Can anyone
point me to where I need to go?
I have a Mac on a 24/7 network that I'd like to use as a mail server
for 2 lists. I expect one to reach several thousand subscribers,
while the other will likely remain less than a thousand. I have no
budget -- for now -- but as this is a marginally commercial entity I
can't use something like Yahoo.
Am I crazy, or can a combo of Autoshare and SIMS get the job done for me?
Any help appreciated.
Regards,
Erik Ness
