I don't understand it myself. There was no listmaster e-mail address entered
in the list stuff field. The only e-mail account that was created in EIMS was
the list account. I hadn't created the list.d and list.m mail accounts. Posts
to the list from the form page worked fine. When 12:00 rolled around the
digests for my other lists were sent to digest recipients but the new list got
them posted to the list e-mail account. Creating the list.d and list.m
accounts fixed everything though

The automated web archives are rolled over when the standard text
and/or html archives are rolled over. In the Admin, Command-L, click
the list, click the List button, find the Messages field, see the

Well, I've switched all my lists back to text format for now, until I can
get back to Rochester. But an old question comes up that I never got around
to asking.

Is there a way for Autoshare to realize that @rit.edu and at ritvax.rit dot edu

subscribed with post abilities, and mjv2411 at ritvax.isc.rit dot edu tried to

I used that for awhile, but it kept on rejecting long announcements that I
wanted to post myself. Some announcements are more than 300k, while many
attachments are under 300k. The best thing would be to have an option to
suppress attachments. I'm hoping that will be implemented in the future.

As AppleScript dictionaries must be read locally, you need at least
the AutoShare dictionary file in the same folder as the remote Admin.
The AutoShare dictionary file is included in the released archive.

There are three steps to heaven.

1. Create a text file containing a list of addresses.
2. Give the file the same name as the list you want to update.
3. Drop the file on the AutoShare application.

AutoShare automatically generates "subscribe" messages for each new
address and processes them in the normal way.

I have a resedit (rsrc/RSED) file called "autoshare" in the same

AutoShare works fine for me, too. The real issue here for me wasn't
AutoShare at all, but SIMS. Up until the point of one of the recent
Mac OS 9 betas, SIMS would lock up when you established an SMTP connection
to it. I'm not sure whether it was a change in a Mac OS 9 beta that
fixed the problem, or the recent update to SIMS itself (probably the
latter, I suppose), but it works just fine now.

Greetings,

During the process of testing a new AutoShare (version 4.0 ) list service
configured to utilize mailback (keyword returned in subject field). It was
noted that <netscape.net> webmail rewrites the subject field of a simple
"Reply" so the original message subject is enclosed in brackets.

Example Rewrite> RE: [ Confirmation Request - b440d974 ].

The brackets apparently intefer with AutoShare's ability to recognize the
keyword response. AutoShare treats the the confirmation response as a new
post and sends the client a "Confirmation Request" in lieu of releasing the
original post for distribution. If the brackets are removed Autoshare
handles the transaction normally. It follows that if brackets are added to
a Confirmation request subject field, Autoshare will send a non-webmail
client (Eudora) a new confirmation request in response as well.

I was hoping that I would be able to utilize the process extender feature
to allow a review of the subject field before a request confirmation
message was moved from the Mail Back folder but this does not seem to be
possible. Has anyone been down this path before who might get me on track?

Subject: How to disable that built in Precedence: bulk filter?

Hello.

New to the list... I've gone through some recent archives, but
nothing popped up. Apologies if this has been asked recently.

We have a list running nicely, on a solid, stable machine,
but it's behind a firewall. (The list owner wants to keep
local control, so moving the list out is not really an option.)

We want to add a web archive... but this isn't possible behind
the firewall. However, we came up with the simple idea of
having a second listserver running outside the wall, with
a single subscriber-the first list. NoAck, no mail (to avoid
a mail loop), allowed to post (sort of moot, since it's been
set as an open list)... with web archives turned on. Tests
show that it would work perfectly... except the incoming
files have a Precedence: bulk header (on purpose), and the
web archive list filters these out.

Is there any way to turn this built-in filter off? All other
options for getting the web files out from behind the firewall
require someone's actual (ongoing) labor... which we're trying
to avoid.

All help greatly appreciated.

I've done some process extenders, but I'm not sure what you mean by "of
type filter".

Isn't there an easier way to do this? It's my list that is behind the
firewall, and Claude has helped me out be setting up a list on his server
to collect the archives. The problem is , none of the posts are being
accepted by his list. Is there something I can do on my list which would
get rid of the "Precedence: Bulk header" when sending out? Preferable is
for his list to accept it, but I'm without a clue how to do that. Any help

I am btw working on adding more functionality into this filter type.

>type filter".

Each process extender is of a given type, e.g. Before Processing,
After Processing and Filter. The type refers to at where it kicks in
during the main processing of the AutoShare server. See the
documentation, which outlines each type, along with a general
introduction to process extenders.

>Isn't there an easier way to do this?

It is just too risky making it a built-in feature to disable the
precedence header. If an individual can write a process extender
which does it, there is also reason to believe that the same
individual is aware of the risk involved with removing the header. As
such a calculated risk and so less of a risk.

You can use "request addresses" (there is a section in the
documentation describing these) to make it easier for your
subscribers.

I figured it was about time, so here it is.

   <ftp://ftp.dnai.com/users/m/meh/AutoShare/Beta/>

Note that betas by their very nature are risky business. A readme
document has been included in the archive to spell out the details of
4.1b1. Thanks :-)

Ironically, the readme document in the directory says "There is no
public beta at this time." Maybe that's to throw people off the
track of listserv bliss. :-)

Downloading now -- I love betas.

If some people complain about access to ftp.dnai.com before b2 comes
around, I'd appreciate it. In any event, I hope for a fairly brief
beta, aimed merely at fixing newly introduced bugs.

Well, I had not put in enough effort to pin down the problem. Users
(yes they are more than one now!) that does not get the headers or
footers included all uses styled text.
Here follows the contents of two example messages. "Test 1" in plain
text and "test 2" in styled.

Subject: test 1
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed"

My footer :-)

Subject: test 2

boundary="============_-1270047891==_ma============"
Message-Id: <502457252604087980357 at licr.ki dot se>

<x-html><!x-stuff-for-pete base="" src="" id="0"><!doctype html
public "-//W3C//DTD W3 HTML//EN">
<html><head><style type="text/css"><!--
blockquote, dl, ul, ol, li { margin-top: 0 ; margin-bottom: 0 }
  --></style><title>test 2</title></head><body>
<div><font size="+3" color="#FF0000"><b>Test 2</b></font></div>
</body>
</html>
</x-html>

Any ideas on how to solve this? Can you have an alternative
header/footer to be added to "styled" messages? I guess it has
something to to with the "Content-Type:"

Is there any obvious reason I would get two confirmation requests instead
of one? I have set most lists to require confirmation to get a list of
subscribers. When I send a review message to one of these lists, I get
the usual confirmation request. I have the list configured to recognize
the confirmation in the subject, and I just click on reply and send. Then
I get a second confirmation request. I do the same thing again, then the
command is executed. If this question makes sense, why could this happen?

Subject: Vacation List woes

After all these years of running Autoshare I finally am setting up some =
vacation service accounts.

I followed the documentation found in the Autoshare 4.1 Sample Process =
Extenders/Before Processing Folder/Vacation folder. I left Mailbacks out =
of the picture to simplify the test (after having the problem mentioned =
below).

Everything works BUT (don't we all hate that word? ;-> ):
1) (This is the important one) Messages sent to the vacation account that =
are to be acted upon don't appear to be trashed and continue to be =
processed by the vacation account. So, if you send the message "on" you =
get copies of the response to on repeatedly until you go in and catch the =
item in the filed mail folder and throw it out. In a similar manner a =
message to doc to update the returned document appears to be responded to =
repeatedly.

2) If you use mailbacks they don't appear to work. For example, a =
mailback in the "on" document will reach the sender of the on document, =
but the reply won't go through. I think that is because the 'On" command =
has already been set so the reply can't get through.

3) You must use a doc command without mailback for the reason mentioned =
in 2 above.

4) There is a slight error in the documentation (vacation.html) found in =
the in the above folder. Sentence 2 under Configuring User Accounts =
reminds us to create a folder with the user's account name (etc.). But it =
doesn't say where. It probably should even though I suspect this is =
mentioned elsewhere in Mikael's other documentation.

Any thoughts?

I've got a few things to check out (like turning the vacation notices off =
and then on again. That may be the problem given how this who thing =
started out). But, I certainly haven't much left to try.

Mikael? Others??

Thanks.

Further information on the stuff below: I grabed a couple of the massages =
as they came through the Filed Mail Folder. It appears the the response =
to the "on" or "off" messages are sent to the test account (we'll call it "=
test" from here on). But, since that account is set to save a copy and =
send a copy to the Filed Mail folder we have a loop as the message passes =
through the filed mail folder a second, third etc. time. So, what did I =
miss in setting up things? Clearly the Vacation account is not killing =
these looped messages as I think it should.....
