SSH forwarding would solve a number of problems. Is there a canned howto
for the popular windows ssh clients?
I'd be interested in seeing anything for Tera-term and its ssh extension
as these 2 pieces of software are free.

This isn't an official HOWTO, and it doesn't mention that particular
package, but you might find something I wrote for our user community
useful:

On the PC side, I've used Eudora, Eudora LIght, and
a program called The Bat
(http://www.ritlabs.com/the_bat/index.html).
On the Linux side, I've used the Fetchmail/exmh
combo. For an explanation of why there are so
few APOP mail clients for Unix, see

In case anyone wants it, I moved the old Vitual Server patch for qpopper
2.5 over to 3.0. I also changed the type of database needed (requires
sleepycat software's db routines included in newer glibc, or directly
from their web site). This is meant to complement sendmail's
virtusertable feature and the database is stored in the same format.
A patch against 3.0beta14 is available at
http://jordy.wserv.com/lame.html.
Enjoy,

Subject: Solaris 2.5.1 lossage (Shadow pw?)
So, it's been years since I last built qpopper and this time it's not
working.
I've tried both 3.0(lastest beta) and 2.53, both with and without apop
support. With both, no matter what I do, a simple
user <foo>
and
pass <bar>
comes back with
-ERR Password supplied for "<foo>" is incorrect.
Suffice it to say, I /know/ the Password supplied is NOT incorrect.
My only guess is that, even though I built with --enable-specialauth in
all 4 permutations, something's wrong with shadow PWs.
If anyone's fought through this, please let me know...
Thanks much,

Subject: Unable to obtain socket and address of client, err = 107
Hello all,
Version 2.52, RedHat Linux 5.1 (kernel 2.0.36).
I just started getting this message in the secure log:
Mar 17 15:13:15 hostname in.popper[21149]: warning: can't get client
address: Connection reset by peer
Mar 17 15:13:15 hostname in.popper[21149]: connect from unknown
...and this message in the messages log:
Mar 17 15:13:57 hostname in.popper[21183]: Unable to obtain socket and
address of client, err = 107
The are occuring over and over in both and I have not tracked down what
the problem is.
I looked at the source code for qpopper (pop_init.c) and found:
------
if (getpeername(sp,(struct sockaddr *)&cs,&len) < 0){
pop_log(p,POP_PRIORITY,
"Unable to obtain socket and address of client, err =
%d",errno);
exit(1);
}
------
I also checked my firewall logs and found nothing to directly link entries
to these system log entries.
Where should I look now?
Thanks,
Curt

Subject: SOLVED: Qpopper 3.14b and APOP
Just thought I would post a success getting Qpopper 3.14b working as
an APOP server under RedHat 5.1 Linux.
A scan through recent FAQ's and mailing lists turned up that 2.53 had
problems accessing the data base on some (mine) systems. But when I
tried compiling 3.14b it wouldn't finish popauth.. The suggestion to
manually blow away the ./popper/popauth.o file worked. Even a 'make
clean' would not do this.
So everything works as I would expect it to now, thanks to the FAQ. :)

sometimes if someone receives a large attachment (but less than 5 meg), it
appears that the message isn't deleted correctly from the spool file,
leaving half an email. of course this produces invalid from lines (ie no

i'm running qpopper 3.0b14 in server mode.

Should this work?

This needs to be in the FAQ.
Change the qpopper line from nowait to nowait.200, or whatever suits
your needs.
From Inetd's man page:
The wait/nowait entry is applicable to datagram sockets only (other sock-
ets should have a ``nowait'' entry in this space).
[snip]
.... The optional ``max'' suffix (separated from
``wait'' or ``nowait'' by a dot) specifies the maximum number of server
instances that may be spawned from inetd within an interval of 60 sec-
onds. When omitted, ``max'' defaults to 40.

look in the FAQ (if it made there already) or in the list archive (if
there is one), you need to change 'nowait' to 'wait' in the inetd.conf
line for popper, if I remember correctly

Danny,
try to modify the line in inetd.conf that stats qpopper. Use something
like this:
pop3 stream tcp nowait.400 root /usr/sbin/popper
By default, inetd starts up to 40 process of popper per minute, with this
configuration, inetd start up to 400 process pe minute.
I hope that it helps !

well.. i'm still combating this problem, however here's an interesting fact :
this problem only affects people who are running mdaemon.
for now i've downgraded to the latest non-beta, and time will tell if
things are better.

To adjust the time lock files are maintained, try something like
pop3 stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/popper popper -T 90
in /etc/inetd.conf.
The -T flag controls the time in seconds lock files will be maintained for
the pop3 clients. The default is 60 seconds. If this is set too long,
endusers in the habit of hitting the "send" button on their pop3 clients
(or possibly having set the clients to retry automatically) will see "pop
lock" errors. Too short, you'll have timeout problems with endusers'
large mailboxes.
On slow network connections, and with some endusers deleting all mail from
the server, some deleting none, you'll have *both* "pop lock" and timeout
problems. Encourage the endusers to set their clients to delete mail as
it's downloaded if at all practical for your situation. That way, one
setting of -T, possibly the default, will suffice.
[Recently, we saw an interesting twist to this problem. One of the SCSI
disks on a customer's Solaris server was failing, causing the performance
of the disk to drop dramatically. While the server was accessed at LAN
speeds, the time required to copy the mailboxes to the pop lock file
locations went up appreciably. Apparently, the mailbox is cp'd to a
[username].tmp, a null file for the original mailbox is created to catch
any incoming mail while qpopper is handling the pop3 client, and then the
[username].tmp file is cp'd to [username].pop. The failing SCSI disk made
the last cp operation painfully slow. The rename and null file creation
are very quick inode changes whereas the cp requires actually transferring
the bulk of the mailbox to another area of the disk. I haven't gotten
around to checking the source and compile time options to see if I've
gotten something fouled up, or if some better combination of cp, rename
and soft links might be available, and more efficient. Re-seating the
SCSI cable solved the underlying "failure" problem, making the entire
issue go away.]

I saw this on 3.0b13, but so far not on 3.0b14 - Under BSDI 4.0
However, it appears that Claris Client is unable to remove mail
from server under 3.0b14. Otherwise so far so good.

maybe i'm missing somethign here..why would a timeout take precedence over
active mail being downloaded?
It's basically saying "ok, if it doesn't take you 90 seconds to download
this 2 meg email message, i'm gonna cut you off and move on" or
something like that??

Anybody out there familiar enough with the qpopper source code to speak to
this? I'm probably going to swerve off into the weeds on this one....
I've always assumed it was a problem of: 1) coordinating the file access
activities of the SMTP and POP3 daemons, and any local mail clients, and;
2) dealing with the TCP network signaling between qpopper and POP3
clients. In environments where you can trust flock() or fcntl(), you'd
still have to ensure that the SMTP daemon and local mail clients obey the
locks. And what do you do when the POP3 client simply disappears, giving
no signal?
More specifically to what you're suggesting, qpopper does appear to close
the pop lock, restore the mailbox file when the client signals a
termination before the timeout period. (A client-generated termination
might be a successful download, or it might not.) However, once the
timeout period has been exceeded, qpopper does not wait around for further
signaling from the client -- it just cuts the client off, resets the
mailbox as if the client never connected. Could this be improved?
I don't know. (Anybody even know if this description is accurate?)

i'm sure some people might disagree with this, but if a client tries to
access his mailbox and there's already a popper process and/or lock lying
around (even an active one), i remove/clean it/both then let the client
start downloading mail. (kill the pid or remove the lock or both) this
eliminates lock busy errors totally because the newer session always takes
precedence, no matter what.
So if you're checking the same mailbox from 2 seperate clients at the same
time, then you're kinda screwed, as they say :-)
something like:

Helo Marco,
the answer for your question is yes, in the inetd.conf, try to use this
type of calling:
popper -Txxx
Where xxx is the amount of seconds that you want to set the timeout for
each message.

I have just newly installed 3.0b14 onto a Solaris 2.5.1
mail server, and for some reason it doesn't seem to
use the syslog. It's just that a few users have been
reporting problems, and I'm finding it hard to diagnose
the problems since I can't seem to get the default
logging to work.
I *believe* the documentation says to add the following
lines to the syslog.conf file. Which are :-
local0.notice;local0.debug /var/log/POPlog
I realise it's not the syslog file, but this was the example
given, so in the long-term I would like it to use the syslog files,
but for the moment any type of logging would be appreciated...
Anyone got any ideas....
Michael.

You need to use tabs as whitespace in most syslog.conf files. Also
/var/log/POPlog needs to exist, as most syslogs react to non-existant
files by disabling logging to that file.
If you still have trouble, strace (or its equivalent) will allow you to
verify the right syslog facility is being called, and then stracing
syslog will allow you to verify the data's going to the right file.

Well, what worked for me when I was unable to get shadow passwords working
(and I'm doing this for myself, and I don't have any apop clients so I haven't
tested that part) was making the binary setuid - since I'm not using apop, I
went for setuid root, as that's the owner of /etc/shadow.
Check the --popacct stuff and ownerships and such.

I had the exact same problem. RedHat as well.. I had to use the 3.14
beta, and then it worked right off, APOP and all.
I mostly posted my trial and error mails to the mailhelp list at

I compiled qpopper 2.5.3 with support for bulletins
(--enable-bulletins=/var/spool/bulls), it compiled fine, and it now puts a
.popbull file in each users' home directory. Only one problem -- The
bulletins are not being sent to users.
I am on Solaris 2.6.
Does anyone have any ideas? I am 99% sure I did everything correctly.

Just a suggestion, but it would be nice if this was a configurable
parameter to disable when ./configure is run. Also, the file pop_rpop.c
could be more friendly if it checked for the existance of BLOCK_UID like
pop_pass.c does so that if it is commented on in popper.h, the software
will build correctly...

Installed and currently running the beta of popper3 and its working
good. A person today received mail from a CompuServe user that had
errors in the envelope. Don't know how it happened, but there was an
extra F in FFROM which caused the error below. After I mailing edited
the users mail file and removed it, she was able to receive the contents
of her file, but the second message about xsender appeared in the system
logs even though sh was not notified. Also, before fixing the her file,
popper was leaving the lock file dangling, which was a primary reason
for me to replace my old pop3, I got tired of deleting the lock files...

The usual reason for failure is bad bulletin format. Check the first
From line in particular. Single digit dates (Aug 1) need padding to be
picked up properly.

Subject: apologies and help with timeouts
hi there
my first (actually second) to the list.. sorry about that 'help' message -
i was intending to get 'help' from the main listserve on where the archive
was.. thanks to those of you who've already replied to my rather cryptic
question..
so - here's the real question:
We're an ISP serving about 1500 users. Users connect to a remote number,
are authenticated via a remote radius server - and then pop their mail
across a 256KB line.
users mail sits in /var/mail which is an NFS mounted directory.
We have loads of complains about timeouts (i notice some other questions
about timeouts but not too many answers yet..). note - we *don't* have
file lock problems - well, extremely rarely.
Here's some stats on a pop session across our LAN (not typical of a dialin
user..)
popping a 13 meg box, 1250 messages..
logging in 20:18:45
collecting mail 20:24:08 3:13 *
start close 20:33:50 9:42
finish close 20:38:46 4:56 *
total session 17:09 mins
* are these times normal for the .user.pop file create and close?.. (the
actual download - 9:42 mins - seems quite good)..
comments from several colleagues suggest:
- problem is because /var/mail is nfs mounted (1 for 3 against)
- problem could be some specific qpopper <-> NIS+ problem
- problem could be qpopper <--> NFS problem (but we don't have lock
errors)
also - i am not a programmer, i'm basically doing sysadmin work whilst we
wait for a techhire.. but this is a real problem for our users who are all
timing out during that 'logging in' process (and then of course connect
again immediately and hit the point where you get 'is another session
active' error. Thinking again - is this a lock error (they don't get a
.user.pop.lock file - they just hit the popper whilst the .user.pop file
is copying back to /var/mail..
we run solaris 2.6; qpopper 2.5.3 and NIS+
thanks!

The implications of running procmail are probably less than the
implications of running /bin/mail. procmail is reportedly better at file
locking than /bin/mail is.

Here is the stuff from my machine. It's a BSD3.1 box.
Hope it helps you.
tcpd is the service that monitors then fires off the qpopper program.
####/etc/inetd.conf

pop stream tcp nowait root /usr/libexec/tcpd qpopper -b /usr/home/ed/bull
####/etc/services

Here are the protections for qpopper ( old version was popper)
hottub: [6]% ls -al pop*

Katz,
I didn't understand yet. Let suppose that your binary file "popper" is
located in /usr/local/lib/qpopper, so use "chmod 755
/usr/local/lib/qpopper" like root to give the right permission to this
directory. In inetd.conf, try to insert this line:
pop3 stream tcp nowait.100 root
/usr/local/lib/qpopper/popper popper -s -d
Any doubts send me a e-mail.

This is dispite my best efforts to follow the INSTALL instructions exactly

I get more of reported symptoms (but blowing away .o files doesn't help),

OK, so reading the defines about exhausts my C programming knowledge.
(indeed, maybe I've overstepped it and am chasing a red herring?) How do
I fix this? Install GDBM? change "auth_dir[..." to "auth_file[..." on
line 347? Or has someone already fixed it?
Thanks!!
