Is that 2.9Mb before or after MIME encoding?

Remember that sending files via email results in an instant 50% bloat...

Only if you have your pop3 client set to use pop3 uploads.

That's not the default setting for most email clients - they usually
connect directly to the smtp server.

As far as I know qpopper has absolutely nothing to do with this but Sendmail
can be configured to maximize the size of messages sent. In this case I
believe it might be the Firewall altogether.

You attach a binary file (compressed) with the size of 2.9 MB to your
message. (2.9 MB = 3040871 bytes) After Base64 encoding your message will be
33% bigger. (base 256 to base 64). Your attachment will now be 4054494 bytes.
Adding the overhead contained in your mail (addresses, routing etc) your
message probably exceeds the limit of the firewall.

        Best regards, Krafft

There is a pameter that sets the max size of an e-mail. This parameter is
configured in sendmail.cf.

Subject: Qpopper and virtual domains
Date: Wed, 5 May 1999 18:00:25 -0300

Dear Gentlemen,

As we switched our qpopper installation from from the (buggy)
v.2.4 to v.2.53, we faced an unpleasant side-effect: our
virtual domain POP accounts have stopped responding. The
error message logged by the system as virtual users try
to retrieve messages is the infamous:
"-ERR Password supplied for "<user>" is incorrect".

To achieve virtual domain support, we use popper in conjunction
with chroot, on a Red Hat Linux 5.2 box.

Non-virtual users are able to access their mailboxes using
popper just fine.

Could anyone suggest possible solutions to this problem?
Is there any known problems regarding popper + chroot?

Subject: Restricting time between accesses

Has anyone written a patch that restricts the number of times that a user
can access the qpopper within a particular time interval? I did a search
of the list archives and did not come across any reference to this.

We have a large number of users who access their pop accounts every minute.
 Though we try to work with them to increase the interval I would prefer
enforcing a restriction on the server end.

hmm, i wouldn't think it'd be too hard, but where are you gonna store all
the info for the users? it would have to be in a text file.
delimited like  <user> <# times checked> <last time checked in tm form>

in the beginning of pop_user() you could check the text file for the
username (p->pop_parm[1])..if it found it, you could read # times into an
int called say "num" and last time into a time_t called "last_time" and do
something like..

outside pop_user()

#define INTERVAL	5	/* interval checked in (minutes) */
#define	MAX_TIMES	2	/* max # of times allowed to check in */
				/* INTERVAL */
#define STORE_FILE	"users.dat"

in pop_user()

int num=0;
time_t tm;
time_t last_time;
FILE *fp;

/* START of check and read in user connect stats */

/* END of check and read in user connect stats */

time(&tm);
if ((tm-last_time) > (INTERVAL*60)) {
	/* user is checking less frequent than interval */
	num = 1;
	last_time = tm;
	/* write user stats back to text file here */
	} /* end of if */
else {
	/* user is checking inside interval */
 if (num >= MAX_TIMES) {
	/* exceeded their max connects */
	pop_quit(p);
	}
 else {
	/* didnt exceed their connects, increment their count */
	num++;
	/* write user stats back to text file here */
	}
} /* end of else */

that MAY be wrong, it's really off the top of my head. hope it helps some.

Hi!

I did a patch to qpopper 2.4b1 (slightly security enhanced version)
that does something like this.

Problem: no docs 8-} Bad. I know. Volunteers ?

You can download it from

ftp://ftp.lf.net/pub/unix/mail/pop/virt-qpopper-2.4b1.tgz

Short explanation:

We use smail as MTA. smail starts a small perl script if it delivers
mail locally. This perl script looks up into /var/pop/<domain>/Accounts,
whether this e-mail address exists, otherwise it delivers into the file
/var/pop/<domain>/postmaster

In the Accounts file per domain (here: sampledomain.com), you find lines
like:

postmaster doJizuHA - - a support at somewhere dot com
blafasel doJizuHA - - -

  <user> <pw> <mq> <dq> <cust> <comment>

with

  <user> uniq username, max. 64 char, incl. '.' und anderer special chars
  <pw>    password in cleartext
  <mq> mail quota - max. allowed size per mail
  <dq> disk quota - max. allowed total mailbox size
  <cust> customer key for a web based admin interface
  <forwards> if not deliver locally, where else should it go ?

Example:

blafasel at sampledomain dot com -> stored in /var/pop/sampledomain.com/blafasel

Oh, it does need one popowner account (all mailfiles will belong
to that user, no other unix accounts necessary).

Yes, many TODOs, like:
- porting the patch to qpopper 2.53 or 3.0betaX ?
- docs
- publishing the web interface and the smail mail delivery script

If your users have shell accounts on your mail server, one possibility is
to use ssh to encrypt the mail traffic. There are a couple of problems
with doing this though, one being that you have to have an ssh client for
the users machines (for windows, I tend to use secure crt myself, but it's
not cheap). Also, if your users might be checking mail from more than one
machine, it can be a pain to set up the mail client so that it's not
assuming port 110 for the pop connection (I check on a couple machines
myself, so I have to use more than one local port to redirect my mail
from). Eudora can do it, not sure about others (eudora is a pain to set it
up though, you have to add a keyword to the ini file, thankfully if you're
only dealing with one mail machine you don't have to change the setting,
personally I wish qualcomm would make it so you can set up the pop port
when setting up an account rather than making it something you have to edit
the ini for, but my suggestion for that was ignored).

I don't think APOP or Kerberos encrypts anything besides the password, so
if you want the mail itself secure, then the only real option that I can
think of is ssh.

A) use APOP so no passwords are sniffed.
B) use a switch instead of a hub.
C) dont put users on the same hub as servers.
D) beat the users over the head with a mallet/sledgehammer

You could still sniff the contents of the mail.

> B) use a switch instead of a hub.

Does not (in standard config) protect you against sniffing. I know of atleast
one method you can sniff communication from one of the parts. I myself prefer
scrambling HUBs.

> C) dont put users on the same hub as servers.

But if all users are on the same HUB this is useless.

> D) beat the users over the head with a mallet/sledgehammer

Yup! It always works. Be sure to pound the offending users in a secluded area
with no witnesses other than fellow administrators. (This is the solution I
would recommend.)

        My recommendation:
Install SSH2 proxies between client and server. That should do the trick.
(www.ssh.fi & www.datafellows.com and check for information about tunneling
other protocols.)

Pros: All communication will be encrypted between client and server.

Cons: Administration of open/private keys certificates will increase
administration a lot and client installation and support will be (a lot?)
more complicated. You also have to pay for it if used by a company.
The users must still make sure their private key is properly protected.

If it's just password sniffing they are doing, you could get some additional
protection by using APOP. (The most common type of sniffing since offenders
rarely logs everything done on the network and they can let the sniffer
trigger on certain keywords.)

You can then force your users to use APOP authentication.

Pros: Easier to implement.

Cons: People who sniff the net can capture the traffic and then use
dictionary based attacks to find out the password, thus security is no
stronger than the password choosen. 8 random characters including
[a-z][A-Z][0-9] is usually enough to deter someone who is just using his
spare time. (Passwords choosen by the user is doomed to fail against
dictionary based attacks.)

Additional: Make sure the server is secure. (Standard Redhat installation
isn't known to be the most secure Unix in world history.) It might be that
you suspect sniffing and they make you believe so to avoid you to notice that
they have broken the server and implemented backdoors.

/Cheers!

If the other users get to watch, it's a far more effective education tool.

Can APOP be used against MD5 encrypted /etc/shadow entries?

I ask that because most password kits these days won't let lusers set
insecure passwords. If popauth does, then it's reduced security of the
machine somewhat. :-(

Subject: reasonable APOP policy

From: Fil Krohnengold <fil at amnh dot org>

Howdy -

I'm here trying to figure out how to stop clear text from coming into
our institution. I've got s/key logins ready to go for our unix shell
folks, but the big sticking point is POP. Now - most of my users use
Eudora of some flavor - but not all. And it's one thing to say to them
"If you're checking your mail from offsite, you need to either dial in
to the network, or use APOP" - but it's another thing entirely to try
and enforce it. We can't go APOP_ONLY since there are other clients
floating around the institution which don't support APOP and this isn't
the kind of environment where the network folks get to set a lot of policy.

So I was thinking about a small mod to the pop_user function. Perhaps
checking out the POP struct for where the client is coming from, and
then based on a regexp decide if the client is "offsite" and mandate an
entry in pop.auth for a useful session.

Comments? Does this sound worth while to anyone else? If so, should I
maybe broaden my focus a bit? A config file option rather than just a
compile option perhaps?

Thanks.

well, since you asked, i think the best solution is to offer a webmail
that supports apop...

since i use openbsd, i dont have many options....popauth doesnt compile
right (segfaults), and kerberos is a pain in the ass to setup in
win95 clients (in brazil it's worst, because of export regulations,
i can't get kerb16.exe for eudora)..the problem is not getting it
but having to setup for the clients.....no mention on "offsite", which
would be worst.

thus, at least for me the best solution would be a webmail with apop
support....for now, we're using a pop capable webmail with ssl
in the same machine, connecting to localhost....

All this does is cause Qpopper to include the "expire" tag in a CAPA
response. So if clients are written to issue CAPA and to look for an
"expire" tag, and to act on it, it does advise them to not allow mail
to be left on the server longer than indicated. But if the client
does not issue CAPA, or does not bother with the "expire" tag, it has
no effect.

As CAPA is a very new extension to POP, not too many clients support
it yet, but some do. Contact your client vendor and tell them if you
want CAPA supported.

There is no conflict with server mode.

Hello all,

I have a system running the "qpopper2.3 server"
on a machine (SUN Spark Classic, SunOS.4.1.4).
This system acts only as a POP server
(The 250+ users have only POP access to this system, no shell)

Although, I have informed the users that they have to configure their
POP clients in such a way, that the messages have to be deleted after
the POP retrieval ("NO leave mail on server" , or "Delete the messages
after x days" for example), many users do not follow this instruction.
This have the result, that the spool area is growing continously.

My question is:--->
Is there a way to configure the POP SERVER (qpopper2.3 or a newer version)
to
automatically DELETE the messages after the successfull mail-retrieval ?

I would appreciate any help,
Thank you.

Hi,

I'm a Slackware3.6 user and I'm trying to use APOP. I'm using Becky and

When I was trying with 2.53, I gave it up because I heard it wasn't
working on RedHat to.
The error message I got on 2.53 was, when I tried to add a user using
popauth command, it gave me the message
"./popauth: /etc/pop.auth: unable to open POP authorization DB"

Now I'm trying it again with 3.0b15. The popauth command worked fine on
this version, but when I try to connect it from my mailer, the server
cuts the connection and I can't receive the mails from the server.(Same
without useing APOP authentication)

The message I get on Eudora is,
   Couldn't read data from the network.
   Reason: The connection was reset from the server.(10054)

And on Becky is,
   POP3 session was closed.Please try latter.

Has everyone using linux figured out how to use APOP?

Thank you.

Thankyou for your fast reply.
But this wasn't the problem. I am actually running it like,
-rw-------  1 pop   mail     1536 Dec 27 07:38 /etc/pop.auth
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root   root   191013 May  417:45 /usr/local/bin/popper
-rwsr-xr-x  1 pop   mail    21796 May  417:45 /usr/local/bin/popauth

When I send a mail to the USER account, the size of /var/spool/mail/USER
increases, and when I try to get the mail from the server, it makes a
/var/spool/mail/.USER.pop file and stops.

Hoping for more information.

number has been less then a hundred. We usually end up killing qpopper
and letting the number drop back down, and then turn qpopper back up and
everything is fine. Anyone have any idea why this is happening and if so
how to fix it. I am going to start digging through the archives, but if
someone can give me a quick answer it would be a big help. Thanks in
advance for you time.

Subject: User gets mail but delivery is late?

I have a user who just told me that she's been checking mail fairly
regularly but she just now got 8 messages from yesterday. (She doesn't
check mail at all on Tuesdays and Thursdays; she only works part time).

The system (Unix Qpopper 2.5.3) logs are confusing me, as I thought the
order of the fields was::

Date System popper[id]: Stats: User Msg Size Msg Size
                                         down-        left    left
                                         loaded       in box

May 12 17:00:38 penguin popper[23941]: Stats: mes 0 0 1 1482
May 14 10:11:33 penguin popper[31029]: Stats: mes 1 1482 7 37899
May 14 10:11:39 penguin popper[31030]: Stats: mes 0 0 7 37983
May 14 14:48:19 penguin popper[31908]: Stats: mes 0 0 8 38667

The log seems to indicate that she checked mail at 10:11 this morning and
downloaded (or rather deleted?) the 1 size=1482 from the 12th. 7 messages
remained in the mailbox. Were they delivered at 10:11?

At 14:48:19, 8 messages were left in the mailbox.

Does "downloaded" mean deleted from the mail box, not actually downloaded?

If she picked up 7 messages at 10:11 this morning, where have they been
between then and 2:48 when she noticed she had mail?

She was running Eudora 4.0 on MacOS 7.5.3; perhaps that was a bad
combination for mail delivery? In theory her system checks mail every half
hour (this is not supported by the logs which indicate she checked mail
twice only today, but at half hour intervals on Wednesday. Perhaps Eudora
got turned off... there's no way to tell and she doesn't remember).

I'm upgrading her OS and her Eudora to 4.0.2.

Any ideas why she did not see new mail at 10:10? She is _sure_ she didn't
see anything in her In Box.

 From the trailer blurb for the mailhelp mailing list

(careful readers will note a reasonable percentage of messages to the
qpopper list are Cc:d to mailhelp (and vice versa))

First thing I'd suggest (if you haven't already) would be to look at
the 'Received' headers on the tardy messages, to see when they were
received by your system. Usually delayed mail is the result of a
clogged server en route.

Try configuring with --enable-debugging, and set the debug command line flag.

Subject: Building QP 3.0 b 14 on HPUX 10.20 w/gcc

Building QP 3.0b14 under hpux:

My configure command:

./configure	--prefix=/opt/qpopper \
		--datadir=/opt/qpopper/lib \
		--enable-debugging \
		--enable-servermode \
		--enable-bulletins=/var/qpopper/bullitins \
		--enable-apop=/var/adm/pop.auth \
		--with-popuid=pop

I'm building wtih gcc.

After two runs with make -k, I get:
>make -k
cd ./popper  && make all
make[1]: Entering directory `/u/vega4/src/servers/qpopper3.0/popper'
cd ../mmangle && make all
make[2]: Entering directory `/u/vega4/src/servers/qpopper3.0/mmangle'
make[2]: Nothing to be done for `all'.
make[2]: Leaving directory `/u/vega4/src/servers/qpopper3.0/mmangle'

   make[1]: *** [popper] Error 1

On hpux, network order and machine order are the same:

From   netinet/in.h

#ifndef ntohl
#define ntohl(x)        (x)
#define ntohs(x)        (x)
#define htonl(x)        (x)
#define htons(x)        (x)
#endif

Ideas?
Anyone gotten qp3b14 to compile under hpux 10.20
