I think popper defaults to logging to local0 (mine does, dunno if I

Hi,
I have some local patches to qpopper, and am interested in any
feedback or opinions - perhaps telling me how I *should* do this sort
of thing.
I host a domain (Awfulhak.org) on another machine
(storm.FreeBSD.org.uk) and want to be able to apop the Awfulhak.org
mail from storm.FreeBSD.org.uk. Storm MXs for FreeBSD.org.uk too.
I don't wish to allow the user namespaces for FreeBSD.org.uk and
Awfulhak.org to collide.
The unusual (?) requirement is that I want to be able to arrange
several different pop accounts for people @Awfulhak.org on storm.
Specifically, elaine at Awfulhak dot org and brian at Awfulhak dot org should go
into individual pop-boxes and the rest of it can go into some other
box.
To this end, I've created a user called awfulhak@storm. I've created
a (sendmail) virtusertable that says
@Awfulhak.org awfulhak
brian at Awfulhak dot org awfulhak+brian
elaine at Awfulhak dot org awfulhak+elaine
and an aliases file that includes
awfulhak+brian: /var/mail/awfulhak+brian
awfulhak+elaine: /var/mail/awfulhak+elaine
Now, if I've still got your attention.... ;-} I've adjusted
pop_apop.c to allow popper to use `the bit before the plus' as the
username to change to (ie, what's in the passwd file), but the
entire login name (potentially user+rest) as the thing to look up in
the auth db and the thing to base the mailbox name on. I've also
adjusted popauth.c to allow user X to change the password for any
X+* users, so in my case, user `awfulhak' can `popauth -user
awfulhak+brian' or `popauth -user awfulhak+elaine'.
The code changes are quite minimal, but extremely functional for my
setup. Any comments on whether they should/could become part of the
mainstream distribution ? Should I adjust more than just the APOP
stuff ?

I have FreeBSD 2.2.7 ,gdbm 1.8.0 and qpopper 2.53.
When I try to start popauth I get
krasair# ./popauth -user anykey
Changing POP password for anykey.
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
When I have looked through the popauth's source I was found that this
message be appeared when
to execute gdbm_fetch(db, key). May be somebody will say why this be
appeared and how this take away.
And
When configure executing it don't identify gdbm puted in /usr/local/lib and
I have to make it by putting
the additional -L -I in Makefile.

ipop3d is a pain in the frickin' ass (pardon my french). the only thing
about it that really ticks me off is the "kiss of death" error that
happens whenever multiple access to a given POP account are attempted.
that happened a lot when i used to run mailservers, 'coz people would have
the automatic mail check running somewhere, then they'd check it remotely,
and be bombarded with this scary looking message, which they'd then
complain about incessantly...

It includes a patch for qpopper.

DRAC is a daemon that dynamically updates a relay authorization
map for sendmail. It provides a way to allow legitimate users to
relay mail through an SMTP server, while still preventing others
from using it as a spam relay. User's IP addresses are added to
the map immediately after they have authenticated to the POP or
IMAP server. By default, map entries expire after 30 minutes, but
can be renewed by additional authentication. Periodically checking
mail on a POP server is sufficient to do this. The POP and SMTP
servers can be on different hosts.

If you're getting up towards those kinds of loads, you want a database
backend to the pop server... :-)

The actual bug is, it uses errno instead of h_errno here.
The improvement I added replaces the numeric error codes with
the actual error string by hstrerror(3) in this case, and by
strerror(3) in several others in this file.
It will also report the IP address of the client now (already
available in p->ipaddr).

I downloaded and installed Qpopper Yesterday, configured it and everything. Got
it to run on my machine, but when I go to telnet an user name or pasword, or use
Eudora from another machine to check mail, it says the password is wrong.
I added the proper lines to the inetd.conf and the services file under the etc
directory, and I installed qpopper under /usr/local/lib
ANy help would be appreciated!

I am running qpopper 3.18/linux 2.2.10 and seem to be having pretty good
luck accept for the occasional corruption of mail headers. What seems to
happen is that the "F" in the word "From:" on the very first message
seems to get dropped. Is there a fix for this problem? If not does
anyone have an idea what part of the code might be broken.

I ran into a problem like this a couple of times, a few revisions ago.
A side effect, too, was that the .pop.user lock files were being left in
/var/mail. I
was puzzled.
The first time it happened, I recompiled qpopper against the new system
libraries
and that seemed to fix it. But the problem cropped up again, this time it was
an Outlook user. I saw more .pop.user lockfiles... and the problem seemed to
work itself out.
I'd really like to understand why it happened, though.

Hi,
I'm also running RH6, and I also had problems getting POP authentication to
work; in fact, I never did get 2.53 to work, only 3.0b18. I switched to 3.0b18
because others were reporting that it was working for them, though not
neccessarily on RH6, but mostly on RH5.x.
One particular thing that I found, though, was that somewhere along the line my
/etc/passwd file got caught "half-way" between being shadowed, and not.
It wasn't until somebody from my local Linux users group directed me to the
documentation at ``man pwconv'' and ``man pwunconv'', these being the tools used
to switch back and forth from password shadowing, did I get the passwd file all
straightened out-- and right about that time, authentication started working,
too!
A coincidence? Maybe-- I was doing a lot of other stuff at the same time, but I
think that that was what fixed it.
I think I may have actually first introduced the problem by exploring Linuxconf
*extensively*, and trying out all of the functions. You have to be careful with
it, because it touches a *lot* of files! ;-)

QPopper are any of you doing so on a Linux box running on a dec alpha chip?

The problem is not with qpopper. You have to edit the /etc/pam.d/other file
to allow password authentication. Use the /etc/pam.d/login file for an
example and change 'other' to look like this:
auth required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so shadow nullok
account required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so
password required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so shadow nullok
session required /lib/security/pam_deny.so
Then it should work.

Subject: problem with Authfile
I have compiled 3.0 with apop and it works fine. I have also been trying
to get the authfile option to work.
Here is what I am doing:
./configure --enable-apop=/etc/pop.auth --with-popuid=pop --with
authfile=/etc/authfile
The APOP works great but it does not seem to take into account the
/etc/authfile which I need to restrict access to qpopper.
Although I have APOP working I want to disable regular password
authentication.
Pls help if you have any insight.

This may be a little bit off the subject, but after recently discussed
password changing issue i wanted to have poppassd running on my system. I
think i would be a great solution for a www-based-password-changer (because
cgi script or php3 script that deals with connecting to popassd doesn't have
to run with root privileges) if it worked :(
I tried to hack poppassd.c to support shadow passwords, md5 with no luck
(that's due to my lack of c programing knowledge). And so it is time to ask
someone, who can do it, to do it ?
If anyone could devote some time to rewrite or update poppassd i (and
probably a bunch of guys too) would be very pleased and grateful.

Actually, you're probably better off using nfs as a backend. Each server
would be able to open any mailbox. That way you don't have to
bother directing your users to a particular machine based on
their username. Load balancing could be accomplished
via DNS round robin(cheap) or a load balancing device
such as F5 Labs BIG/ip (expensive, but much better).
