I fixed the former problem by prefixing the define with "const".

Apparantely your system isn't finding strdup. Mine is, and even with this
./configure set I don't get any errors. What version of cc? I get:
$ cc --version
2.7.2.1
$
It's what came with 2.2.8-RELEASE.

--enable-dracauth is not part of the standard distribution, so it
must be a local patch. Perhaps it conflicts with recent 3.0
versions. Try doing a 'make realclean' and then run ./configure
again without it, just to see if that is the problem.

Edit config.h and define HAVE_STRDUP eg:
#define HAVE_STRDUP
And the error should go away. Wonder why configure missed it in yours
and not in mine tho.

Correct, sendmail handles mail coming into the server. Qpopper handles
users collecting their mail from the server.
I'd suggest checking the news:comp.mail.sendmail newsgroup and
http://www.sendmail.org for sendmail support. This sounds like a
question one would see regularly in comp.mail.sendmail, so I'd suggest
a first stop at http://www.deja.com to search the newsgroup for others
having similar problems.

I have made some progress - but it still fails .
1. I have addedd -Ae compile option to Makefile's [default mode
for HP's ANSI C compiler is -Ac, ie. compatible with really old
releases].
2. Now I am getting some warnings about "Pointers are not
assignment-compatible" - which is OK .
3. Compile still fails for mangle.c module with the following error :

Look in config.h file, there is a line with "#define SERVER_MODE". Check
it if was set to "1" (means true).

very fine ...

As I compiled the package with PAM support, you'll need to add an entry
in /etc/pam.d for qpopper. I simply added a symbolic link from
/etc/pam.d/pop3 to the pre-existing file /etc/pam.d/pop.
Also, the new PAM code passes several things in globals (the gp_
variables below) instead of using the PAM application data pointer,
making it difficult to log trace data from the conversation function.
Here's a patch to pop_pass.c to use the application pointer and
optionally log the inputs to the conversation. (This patch is NOT in my
3.0b28 package.)

Not exactly. I've adopted the role of qpopper RPM packager starting
with the 3.0 betas, and Qualcomm just recently officially integrated
the PAM patch into the standard distribution. None of the 2.53 w/PAM
packages included a PAM config file in the package, and I found (after
laborious sleuthing) that the file is necessary to make the program
work. (The default PAM action without a config file is to disallow
everyone access.) The current build (3.0b28) uses PAM service "pop3",
but one must manually create this file after installation. Not being a
PAM expert, it took me awhile to figure out why I couldn't log in.
I expect that most Red Hat people who install qpopper will already have
imap installed, and the more sophisticated installations will want to
continue using the imap component and just replace the pop servers.
As a packaging design decision, should qpopper provide its own unique
PAM file, or should it recycle the perfectly-good imap-provided one if
it's present? Qpopper shouldn't require the installation of imap.
I suppose another approach is for qpopper to provide a uniquely-named
config file, and the post-install can replace it with imap's if imap's
file is present and qpopper's file hasn't been edited.
[I'm cc'ing this to the qpopper and PAM mailing lists to solicit the
opinions of current PAM users. I expect that qpopper, PAM, and RPM
users/developers will all have useful insights into the issue.]

the problem is that it doesn't log anything to the syslog
(/var/log/messages)
when I downgraded to the previous b26 it (3.0b26) logs connections again...
what's wrong?

The RPM spec file format has a tag that can be used for precisely this
sort of situation: %config. If you list your pam config file as
%config(noreplace) /etc/pam.d/pop3
in the %files section, then it will be installed on the system iff there isn't
one already installed. If the file is present, it will be left alone.
Alternatively, you could have a %post script that generates a 'sane default'
config if the file isn't present..

Seems overly complex to me.
That does bring up an interesting point, though, which I don't think has ever
been addressed on the PAM list: do we need to worry about namespace
collisions/pollution with service names? As more and more applications add
PAM support, it's increasingly possible that a system will have two packages
installed that both use PAM, and want to use the same service name. Does this
need to be actively addressed?

never had this problem with qpopper?? The damon is working when I telnet
into port 110 of the machine it answers. I have ran a few different
configure files and I know it is building right because I the enable shy
worked among other things. as soon as I enter the password it stalls for a
sec, then drops me for invalid verification. .The only other thing I changed
was the division of my file system, so that var was separate from the main
system partition. I am not using shadow password or anything special.. I
just install Linux with nothing special and then build Qpopper, this is the
only build that did not work is there something I may have over looked on
this new build?

The main reason one may want to recompile is performance-- server
mode helps quite a bit in heavy applications of the product. I
believe that is tunable when you call the server, but defaults are

Should work the same. Double check the obvious stuff -- if you're
not using shadow passwords then don't use --enable-specialauth when
running ./configure. If you're still having trouble you can add
--enable-debugging to ./configure and then add '-t tracefile' to the
inetd.conf line (and send inetd a HUP signal). This causes detailed
debugging to be written to 'tracefile' -- there might be something
useful in it.

I had exactly the same trouble a few days ago when I moved pieces of
var from my small root partition to my big usr partition. You need to
get the directory permissions right. On my Red Hat 6.1 system, I needed
to create the /var/spool/mail directory with group write permission
(ie. drwxrwxr-x). If you broke qpopper, then you probably (like me)
broke some other things as well. Look at /var/tmp, /var/spool/samba,
/var/spool/lpd, and /var/spool/vbox. Some of these require additional
write bits or a sticky bit. To see what the permissions should be, try
"rpm -qflv /full-path | grep /full-path" (where full-path is the full
path of the directory in question).

I'd like to see more applications support a configuration directive which
made the service name they used configurable. This would reduce worries
about namespace collisions by at least allowing the alert admin to resolve
them without source hacking, and would also let people who load the crap
out of their servers (binding this, that, and the other thing to different
aliased interfaces) specify running qpopper on one interface, with one
service name (and corresponding pam.d file) and foo-popper (whatever) on
another interface with a completely different pam.d setup.

What does the error message "Unable to get canonical name of client"
mean?
This error message in your log means that a client connected in and
Qpopper got an error when it tried to do a reverse lookup on the IP
address. If the client is local, this may indicate a problem with it's
DNS entry (specifically the PTR record for that IP address), or it may
be a temporary DNS problem. Qpopper 3.0 allows you to turn off this
check if you like. Qpopper 3.0 includes the IP address of the client in
the log message.

First of all, is there a searchable archive of this mailing list? I could
not find it, just the plain archives. I tried to do a manual search of
those pages but I couldn't find anything. I am using QPOP (version 2.53)
A user is generating this error message in our logs and he can not pop his
mail:
Client address "209.81.203.121" not listed for its host name "max4-121.cleveland.corecomm.net
Sorry for the word wrap. The user is using Outlook to pop his mail. This
error message is perplexing, I am not sure what it means because the
reverse DNS lookup resolves to the listed hostname. Other people using
Outlook pop their mail just fine so I am not sure what is causing this
error. Does anybody have any idea as to what is causing this? Thanks for

The DNS is messed up, if I lookup 209.81.203.121 I get
Name: max4-121.cleveland.corecomm.net
Address: 209.81.203.121
then I lookup max4-121.cleveland.corecomm.net and I get
Name: max4-121.cleveland.corecomm.net
Address: 209.81.148.121
note this say 148 where the one above says 203. The whole point of this is
to prevent spoofing attacks. Show this email to your DNS admin and he
should know how to fix it,

I thought I would throw this out there--
To me, the error message "unable to get canonical name of client" is
not really the right error message to display. If popper can't
resolve the reverse DNS of the IP address that has attempted to
connect, maybe the error message should say that. As many know,
canonical names are used in DNS zone files by the entry
ALIAS IN CNAME REAL-NAME
Just my two cents worth-- I personally have no plans to write a
patch....

Hello All,
I tryied to followed the readme on qpopper, but no matter what i
do,
popauth doesn't like /etc/pop.auth file at all (although i did popauth
-init to initialize it) even i just do chmod 777 on it, still unable to
open it.... any ideas? I am compiling qpopper 2.53 with Mandrake
6.0/6.1, i also tryied rpm version.. i have no luck at all....

It's the same concept. An IP address has a "canonical name". To
obtain this name given the IP address, one does a reverse lookup. An
IP address can also have aliases. The CNAME record creates an alias
for the canonical name.

Try upgrading to qpopper 3.0, as a number of these types of errors
are fixed in that version.

Hi,
I recently configure/installed the latest beta 3.0b28 on Solaris 2.6 with
the following compilation options:
--enable-specialauth --enable-apop=/etc/pop.auth --with-popuid=pop.
I've gone ahead and added the appropriate /etc/inetd.conf entries, issued a
SIGHUP on inetd.
Popper is running (cool).
I also initiazled the Pop Authorization db, and added a user to test.
With an "apop" authentication capable client, I tried accessing the the pop3
server.
The connection is successful, however I get an error message "ERR Temporary
drop file not owned by "user""
I realize duh, this is a permissions problem. Doing a quick look in
/usr/mail/.user.pop I see that the permissions are set to rw for user "pop",
no access for group|other. If I do a chown to my test user, I am able to
connect successfully to the pop3 server. If I attempt a second time, the
permissions get set back, and once again I'm unable to connect.
I have tried searching the faq's, and perusing the archives,
but can't seem to find what the permissions of /usr/mail.user.pop need to be
set to.

Um, that's nice, but I'm trying to _reduce_ the flow of data to my inbox,
not increase it. freshmeat-news is even less focused than
qpopper at lists.pensive dot org.
Someone from Qualcomm on this list has already confirmed that they want to
put up a qpopper-announce list. I'm just providing a gentle prod in case
it's been slipping their minds.

The problem is that qpopper got the error while trying to get the IP
address of the client, so it can't report it since that's the call that failed.

Are you having problems authenticating in qpopper with USER/PASS or
APOP? Or is the problem running popauth? Which specific error
message are you getting?

Hi all,
I am trying to use qpopper3.0b28, and everything looks fine til i try
to apop the email, the message says it can't creat <user>.pop file in
/var/spool/mail , my question is, does it mean that I must make the
/var/spool/mail global writable? which is a bit odd since popper it self
is running as root (running out of inetd.conf).
any ideas?

Gcc 2.95.2 fails to install because of a problem with 'sed'. I probably
have to install GNU 'sed' 3.02. In the meantime, I will use the ANSI C
compiler toolkit that was an extra add-on package for HP-UX 10.20. And
my experience is identical to Tadeusz's.
I modified 'configure' to add -Ae to OS_DEP_FLAGS for all HP-UX. I
also changed mmangle/mangle.c to put an ANSI C function header for
FillMangleInfo(). Apparently, HP-UX ANSI C is not properly implemented
to also accept K&R C function headers in all cases. ;-(
Yes, GNU C is the "right" answer. No, I haven't gotten there yet.
