popping from the server but his .user.pop file takes a long time to get back
to the user file and the same for the user.lock file so if the uset tried to
connect within this time the server reject his passwd so any help in this ?

and i tried not to use the .user.pop with enable the server mode but its
still using it i dont know why . i enabled the server mod with --enable
-servermode with configure script .

It looks like you're trying to login with a user ID that exists in
the APOP database. Either login with APOP (under SSL is no problem)
or delete the user from the APOP database.

Hello all,
Where should one place the tar.gz file in order to unpack it? The
instructions say that a directory is created (qpopper4.x).
Thank You.

whereever really..it's only being compiled in the directory you put it in,
not installed there.
I like to put it in /usr/src (in linux anyway)
then your tar xfz qpopper4.0.x.tar.gz will extract it into a new directory
/usr/src/qpopper4.0.x

Subject: Qpopper 4.0.4 Install on RH 7.2
Date: Tue, 2 Jul 2002 08:59:03 -0400

Hello,

This is my first post and my first time trying to configure qpopper on
Redhat 7.2

My /etc/xinetd.d/pop3 file contains the following:

# default: off
# description: The POP3 service allows remote users to access their mail \

service pop3
{
        socket_type             = stream
        protocal                = tcp
        wait                    = no
        user                    = root
        server                  = /usr/sbin/popper
        server_args             = qpopper -s
        port                    = 110
}

In /etc/hosts.allow I have

popper: ALL

Port 110 is setup in /etc/services as

pop3            110/tcp         pop-3           # POP version 3
pop3            110/udp         pop-3

I did a kill -HUP on the pid and I get the following problem

telnet localhost 110

Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: connect to address 127.0.0.1: Connection refused

We have earlier versions on qpopper running on Cobalt RaQs which didn't
require any form of config. Where I am going wrong here?

Thanks

Hmmm....
Is there someone out there?
I've posted the following few days ago but no answer 'til now. Maybe is out
the scope of the list? Is it too much "O.S. dependent"?
Please, help me 'cause is very important for me to change the pop daemon
I'm using on this server.
TIA

Greetings
I'm a newbie to qpopper and then, maybe, my question is already in the dust
from eras....but, anyway...
I'm trying to compile the Qpopper 4.0.4 on my good old Digital Alpha Server
1000/4 266 w/ DEC Unix 4.0F (and patches ;-) ), using gcc 2.7.2.
The "configure" process is gone well and here you can take a look to my
parameters:
# ./configure --disable-update-abort --enable-apop --enable-bulletins
--enable-group-bulls --enable-nonauth-file=/etc/pop-nonauth
--enable-poppassd --enable-popuid=pop --enable-server-mode
--disable-specialauth
As you can see, my intention is to use the APOP authentication alghoritm.
But the "make" phase let me out of any control with the following error
message, compiling popauth:
gcc -c -I.. -I.. -I. -I../mmangle -I../common -O2 -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -DOSF1
-DUNIX popauth.c -o popauth.o
popauth.c:130: conflicting types for `srandom'
/usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/alpha-dec-osf4.0/2.7.2/include/stdlib.h:321:
previous declaration of `srandom'
*** Exit 1
Gosh!!! Have you, qpopper gurus, any idea to resolve my problem?
TIA

Matthew,
I'm exactly at the same spot you are with the exception of RH7.3 on this
end.
I'm trying to replace a old server (RH7.2 + qpopper) but I can seem to be
able to duplicate my previous work.
Hope you get the answer you need, as it will probably answer mine!

The problem for me was -s instead of -S. -s is standalone.

However now I am getting another problem thats sendmail related.

Server Response 550 5.7.1 Relaying denied IP name lookup failed..

That's your mailer not allowing relaying. Has nothing to do with
Qpopper.

Even with disable = no the problem still exists.
My server_args is now -S
I had a PTR record on the Name Server already setup

Hello All,

Have qpopper 4.0.4 on RedHad7.3. I can telnet to the pop3 service (from the
local machine) and sign in.

I can fetch mail from the server using a pop3 client (outlook express) but I
can't send anything. Port110 is opening and listening.

Any suggestions?

You have a typo. It should be "protocol" not "protocal". Check your
logs, because xinetd should have logged an error for this.

Thanks - i don't think it complained LOL. No errors. I changed it to
protocol.

Thanks for everyone's input. This has certainly been an intriguing event.

I'm up and running now. The problems were

-s instead of -S in the xinetd.d/pop3 file
My /etc/mail/relay_domains wasn't configure correctly

telnet localhost 25 and telnet localhost 110 work fine.

Matt,
Thanks for taking time to talk to me today.

I reached a linux person here in Tucson today. He says that in RH7.3 there
is firewall security improvements (?) since 7.2 that is keeping port 25
closed. Now I have to find out how to do that.

Subject: qpopper V. Outlook Express

Greetings,

I have scoured the web and am still having difficulty locating information
on my problem. I'm trying to figure out why so many of my users are having
problems with Outlook Express and poplocks. I'm using qpopper 4.0.3 in
non-standalone. Outlook Express on Windows users are the only ones having
the problem, no other OS or email client is bogging up. If someone could
point me to any information on this subject, or if there is a quick fix I'd
appreciate the info. Might it possibly just be an Outlook Express problem
and something they'll either have to accept or change clients?

tia,

	Time for you to learn a 4 letter expletive - RTFM

	man sendmail

	?

	You do know that POP3 isn't for _sending_ mail, it's for picking it up.

	There's bound to be some point-and-drooly configuration interface in
	Redsplat that will help.

As an SA, and frequent reader of many mailing lists, Id have to say
Peter, your response was over-the-top. A lot of times users are confused
by different protocols/apps/etc and come to these lists for help, who
are we to bash it in their face? As for Mr. Clouse -> Redhat sets
sendmail up by default to only listen on the loopback (127.0.0.1) to
avoid users being unwilling spam robots. I would dive into
/etc/mail/sendmail.cf or the sendmail.mc file (if you can find it) and
really tune sendmail to your liking before turning off the loopback
listening (please do the internet a favour and not turn on promisc
relaying).

Dear Rob and others,
I don't think there's a solution except for your users not to use Outlook
express :-(
I have been dealing with this problem for some time. Interesting to note
that the other pop3 severs about are no better, Qpopper does seem the best.
The solution is to get your users to:
1. increase the server timeouts to 5 minutes that's the max.
2. not to cancel the mail collection half way through and if they do then
they MUST reboot before trying again
3. try to start it with
pop3 stream tcp nowait.80 root /usr/local/sbin/popper qpopper -s -R -T
600 -f /etc/qpopper.conf
in your  inetd.conf
and
set chunky-writes = tls
in  /etc/qpopper.conf

4. The other Outlook express setting that seem to cause a problem is under
accounts advanced
"Leave a copy on server..." do not use this it really seems to make things
go crazy.

Well I hope that's a bit of a help.

I guess we all should be encouraging our users to use Eudora, we could even
buy it :-)
and help support the development of Qpopper!

Chunky writes is something that I'd considered using but wasn't sure if it
would help any, I will give this a try and if I have any positive results
I'll report them back to the group.

I am positively rabid about not leaving messages on the server, if I wanted
them to do that we'd be serving IMAP :)

Thanks for the information and the help. This problem has been driving me
crazy for a while, but I'm just now to a point that I can try to do
something about it. Maybe we can look for improvements in the next version
of Outlook Express? :/

I have a couple of users using IMAP and it works okay though they have
problems to mostly by breaking their connections when it's slow.

The main problem I see is users not waiting for large attachments to
download and using alt control del
to reboot they system this creates corrupt data files in outlook express,
closing outlook express and rebooting normally sorts the problem.

I also note that the main problems are with users logging in via ADSL (DSL)
lines rather than those dailing in direct.

I've followed some suggestions that have been given to me, namely to start
qpopper from inetd.conf with the options -s -R -T -f /etc/qpopper.conf and
enabling chunky-writes=tls. I was talking over all this with my boss and I
had what is probably an entirely uneducated and lame-brained idea about the
timeout value in the Outlook Express client itself. Is what is happening a
result of Outlook Express not sending a proper termination signal to
qpopper after giving up on the download, and then trying to re-check the
box? I was wondering if doing the counterintuitive thing of _lowering_ the
timeout value in Outlook Express might help; telling the client to either
download the mail or let go of the attempt rather that just hanging around.
Any thoughts or ideas on this? All of my users are currently on 56K or
slower dialups.

Thanks,

I guess it might stop the users cancelling the session by crashing out of
Outlook express which is basically the problem. I try tell all my users to
have patience and let the system work itself out. ( Of course this is a
total waste of time :-D )

I have noticed a number of users starting to use other pop3 email agents
mainly out of fear of viruses.
I guess I should encourage this trend and of course we should all encourage
our users to use Eudora 5.1.1 Email ;-)

Subject: qpopper 4.xx & cache?

Hi,

I'm using qpopper (4.0.3) in standalone mode.
Authentication of the users is made via a PAM interface:

client -> qpopper -> PAM -> RADIUS ->RDBMS

With the growing charge on the PAM/RADIUS interface, I would like to
add a local cache to the qpopper (hashtable stored in a shared memory
segment). This should improve the QoS during authentication process.

Any advice? Is there existing patches somewhere?

Regards,
Xavier

Subject: Problems with Eudora + qpopper 4.0.4

I don't know if this is a Eudora 5.1.1 problem or a qpopper 4.0.4 problem.

I have compiled qpoper 4.0.4 with the following configuration lines:

./configure --enable-debugging --with-openssl=/usr/local/ssl --enable-timing

my configuration file reads as follows:

set clear-text-password      = default
set tls-support              = stls
set tls-version              = SSLv23
set tls-server-cert-file     = /etc/mail/certs/signed_cert.pem
set tls-private-key-file     = /etc/mail/certs/cert.pem
set timing                   = true
set chunky-writes            = tls

I have qpopper running out of inetd with the following:
pop3 stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/sbin/popper
qpopper -R -s -f /etc/qpopper.config
pop3s stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/sbin/popper
qpopper -R -p 2 -s -f /etc/mail/pop.options

the pop3s works perfectly with Outlook but also will not work when Eudora
is set to Require: Alternate-Port

The pop3s configuration file is as follows:
set tls-private-key-file = /etc/mail/certs/cert.pem
set tls-server-cert-file = /etc/mail/certs/signed_cert.pem
set tls-support = stls
set log-facility = local0
set tls-support = alternate-port
set clear-text-password = tls
set chunky-writes = tls

Here's the issue and this appears to only be with Eudroa, I get the
following message:

Jul  4 19:51:49 macha qpopper[27967]: (v4.0.4) TLSv1/SSLv3 handshake with
client at *.*.*.* (*.*.*.*); new session-id; cipher: DES-CBC3-SHA

Jul 4 19:51:49 macha qpopper[27967]: Possible probe of account * from host
*.*.*.* (*.*.*.*) [pop_quit.c:29]

I have read the qpopper faq and this says that this is when the client
sents a quit to the server. However this is inhibiting e-mail checking.

I did try and compile with apop. The results where the same when I set it
to STARTTLS and cleartext. However I could log in with STARTTLE and apop.
Some of my users can't use apop but can use SSL....

Any insight or points to the correct documentation would be helpful

Thanks Daniel and Anthony. It appears to be fixed. I went into inetd.con

	MDA != users.

	your lusers are things like "mutt/pine/elm/<insert favourite flavour here>"
	as long as they agree on their locking protocols (flock/fcntl/dot-files etc) its ok.

Subject: 4.0.4: Some clients reporting server terminated connection
Date: Mon, 8 Jul 2002 21:18:05 -0500

I installed 4.0.4 on RH 7.2 two weeeks ago. Other than not finding the
ndbm.h file for bulletins (I omitted bulletins to get it to compile)
everything seemed to be working normally. Over the holiday, several OE users
began to complain that they were getting the message "the server has
unexpectedly terminated the connection"

The debug log shows no trace of these users although they were connecting
normally a week ago. A tcp dump shows they are getting to the correct
server, and in fact the failing session looks very much like my own, which
always succeeds.

These failing users accounts pop OK from my mail client, so it's not
account-related.

My configuration:

./configure \
--enable-debugging \
--enable-shy \
--enable-statistics

And my xinetd config:

# default: on
# description: pop3 is the server for the qpopper program. The server \
# provides POP3 mail retrieval.
service pop3
{
socket_type = stream
protocol = tcp
wait = no
user = root
server = /usr/local/sbin/popper
server_args = qpopper -d -F -C -c -s -T 600 -t /var/log/popd.log
log-on-failure += USERID
}

Can anybody shed some light on this?

My guess is that the problem is popauth.c has a prototype which
declares srandom as void, while on your OS it has some other type.
Qpopper started including prototypes for some standard system calls
because they aren't included in the standard header files on all
systems (*sigh*). Can you do two things? First, check how srandom
is declared (try 'fgrep srandom /usr/include/*.h'). Also, try
commenting out line 130 of popauth.c (the line that says 'extern void
srandom()' amd see if that lets Qpopper compile for you.

Delete this line (likely not causing a problem, but it is confusing).

I'd suggest getting more detailed server traces, and also Eudora traces.

To enable tracing in Qpopper:

Add 'set debug' or 'set tracefile = <tracefile>' to either a global
or user-specific configuration file.

This causes detailed tracing to be written to the syslog or to the
file specified as 'tracefile'.

To enable tracing in Eudora:

On Macs, drag the "esoteric settings" plug-in (which comes with
Eudora) from the "Extra Plugins" folder to the "Eudora Stuff" folder.
Quit and restart Eudora. Then in your Eudora settings go to
"Logging". Check "all bytes transferred".

On Windows, move the "esoteric.epi" plug-in (which comes with Eudora)
from the "extrastuff" folder to the same folder as the "eudora.exe"
file. Quit and relaunch Eudora. Then in your Eudora settings go to
"Logging". Check "all bytes sent" and "all bytes received".

Wrong. If server mode is used, you need to have the additional
condition that spools will not be modified randomly (even with locking).
Instead, they can only be appended to (which is usually a safe bet with
the MDA, but not with MUAs).

In short, *never* use server mode if you allow shell access to or NFS
export of your mail spool. Only MDA and POP server should ever touch
it.

Standard Internet mail provides for two forms of status
notifications: delivery status and message disposition. Delivery
status notification on success can be requested by the originating
client. Compliant mail servers will generate a success DSN when the
message is deposited into the user's mail spool. This would happen
before Qpopper is used to retrieve the message. Message disposition
notification can also be requested by the originating client.
Compliant clients will inform the user that the originator requested
notification, and offer to generate it. This happens after Qpopper
is used to fetch the message.

Delivery status informs the originator that the message made it all
the way to the final recipient's server. No information is provided
as to if the recipient saw or read the message, deleted it, etc.
Message disposition informs the originator as to the action that was
performed by or on behalf of the final recipient (message was read,
message was deleted, etc.) Note that there are privacy and security
concerns with the latter, which is why compliant clients offer to
generate a status notification, but don't do so automatically.

To answer your second question: Qpopper is distributed with full
source code. But I'd advice using one of the standard mechanisms
instead of hacking Qpopper to do this.

Subject: 4.0.4: Some clients reporting server terminated connection
Date: Tue, 9 Jul 2002 20:56:31 -0500

I'm sorry if this has already hit the list - I newly resubscribed and got a
message back saying my post didn't make it.

I installed 4.0.4 on RH 7.2 two weeeks ago. Other than not finding the
ndbm.h file for bulletins (I omitted bulletins to get it to compile)
everything seemed to be working normally. Over the holiday, several OE users
began to complain that they were getting the message "the server has
unexpectedly terminated the connection"

The debug log shows no trace of these users although they were connecting
normally a week ago. A tcp dump shows they are getting to the correct
server, and in fact the failing session looks very much like my own, which
always succeeds.

These failing users accounts pop OK from my mail client, so it's not
account-related.

My configuration:

./configure \
--enable-debugging \
--enable-shy \
--enable-statistics

And my xinetd config:

# default: on
# description: pop3 is the server for the qpopper program. The server \
# provides POP3 mail retrieval.
service pop3
{
socket_type = stream
protocol = tcp
wait = no
user = root
server = /usr/local/sbin/popper
server_args = qpopper -d -F -C -c -s -T 600 -t /var/log/popd.log
log-on-failure += USERID
}

Can anybody shed some light on this?

I use EDG, Qpopper 4.0.4, newest openssl
i have try it with -i 1 and -i 2 support...

Any spool modification (other than appending new data) that occurs
while Qpopper is active is likely to result in corruption. Qpopper
only locks the spool during initialization and at termination; in
between the spool is unlocked. In server mode, Qpopper assumes that
the only change to the spool that can occur during the period is new
mail delivery.

The server log shows no trace of these users (that is, no connection
from their IP address; no attempt to login) yet the TCP trace shows
them connecting to the server? How far does the TCP connection
proceed?

In what way does the failing session look like a successful one?

Depends on what you mean by "qpopper-compatible." If it uses
dot-locks (which are usually what people mean by
"qpopper-compatible"), then you have a problem if the user process
graps the spool during the Qpopper session. On the other hand, if
you mean that the user process creates a .user.pop file, then all
will be well, since Qpopper and the user process will be mutually
exclusive.

With educated users, you can get away with a lot.

It should be perfectly fine if pine is creating .user.pop files.

Yes, but if user processes lock the spool in qpopper-compatible ways
then it will never gain the lock in the first place.

Yes, I know there's a race condition there, but as long as users are
educated/informed of the dangers of simultaneous access then they only
have themselves to blame if their spool gets trashed.

I ran qpopper in server mode for 8 years on a small ISP where users had
pine (tweaked to also set pop locks) and only ever had corruption
problems caused by old versions of qpopper vs eudora 2.*, not between
qpopper and local access modes (the corruption occured on user accounts
where the users didn't have the smarts or inclination to even know what
Pine was).
