If smtpd -d returns MGR login failed, it indicates a bug in the server. If
you really want to use your approach you can probably just write a small
perl script that telnets to port 4200/25 and issues the commands using the
SMTP or the Management protocol.

Another approach is to use the Task Scheduler that comes with IE4 ( I
believe it gets installed if you choose the full installation). It just
provides a nice GUI alternative to AT command. My suggestion would be as
follows:

a) Setup the smtp server to deliver the messages at the predefined times -
for example 30 minutes past the hour.
b) Create a task that will use rasdial to connect to your ISP at 28 minutes
past the hour.

This way at 28 mins past the hour, rasdial connects your server to ISP, and
then 30 mins past the hour, the server tries to deliver its queued messages,
and since you already have a connection, all messages will be delivered
successfully.

This method is much easier to setup than the autodial approach.

Subject: Incorrect e-mail addresses in addressbooks

We just installed WorldMail at our organization. Since we supply e-mail
service to 80 independent offices in our building a wide variety of POP
e-mail software is used.
One of the issues I have with WorldMail is that if a person sends out a
message to a list of people (and there could be a hundred or more names
in the list) if one e-mail address is incorrect the entire message is
bounced back. World Mail tech support tells me that one needs to find
the incorrect e-mail address(es) and correct them before the message can
be sent. Is there a work around to this situation because it seems to
be true?
Thank you Mary Kelly

I am running Worldmail V2.0 on WinNT V4.0 and see a few (4 or 5)
messages a day in the Application Event log that say something like:

cannot open file 'd:\Worldmail\SMTP\MailDir\38F59740.MSG' for reading error 32.

Or the cannot open might be cannot rename.

Has anyone seen anything like this and know what might be going on?

Thanks,

Sounds like your mailbox files may be getting corrupt. You might want to
try defragmenting your drive. We use Diskeeper in our office
(http://www.diskeeper.com).

Perhaps I'm missing something, but I thought the defragmentation does nothing
for file structure itself, but only re-arranges the data on the disk for
faster access. To the best of my knowledge, file corruption and file
fragmentaion are two entirely different problems.

Gabriel,

I agree. Defrag will possibly speed up disk access/transfers.
Something like Norton Utilities is used to check for and possibly fix
file corruption.

I'm still not sure what the errors I'm seeing are due to.

This depends on which client software is used, and where the
addresses are located. WorldMail itself does not bounce a message
if some of the recipients are bad; it delivers to the ones that are
good.

However, some mail programs, such as Eudora, abort sending a
message if the server reports that any of the addresses are bad.
This is usually what people want, because otherwise some people get
the message and others don't, and then when the bad addresses are
corrected, it is awkward to send just them the message.

Also, WorldMail supports mailing lists, which can be used to make
this process easier. Then, you add everyone to the list in
WorldMail, and just send the message to the list.

I would appreciate advice on setting up the Worldmail server to provide
a dynamic address book for our users. They are using Netscape Messenger
as their client.

What needs to be set up and configured in Worldmail?

Is there a simple way to use an existing address book from Netscape and
import it to Worldmail?

Should this all have set itself up automatically when I installed
Worldmail?

If the incorrect address included in the list is bound for one of
WorldMail's local domains, WorldMail will reject the message. If it is for
a non-local domain, WorldMail has no way of verifying the address and will
accept the message. When the destination server rejects that particular
address, the sender will receive a bounce -- for that recipient only -- but
the remaining recipients will be delivered.

Sounds to me like you may have to contact your ISP to allow your server to
relay mail through it.

Your outbound non-local mail did not appear to use DNS to find USA>NET - it
has tried to route to the mail server at your isp - mail.siol.net
The mail server for USA.net would have resulted in a different mail server
name.

In fact that is a normal set-up in a dial-up environment - you send your
outbound mail to your ISP and it relays it for you. However, perhaps you
are trying to route through the "wrong" SIOL mail server.

You will see what is happening best by running ISOTRACE on the mail server -
and turn up the trace level for SMTP.

What I suspect you will find is that the mail server returns an error
response for some of the recipients. Outlook MAPI POP/SMTP module seems to
decide that this error means that it has to move on to the next MAPI mail
service provider to see if it can handle it better ... you probably do not
have any ... so you get the error that there are no available service
providers.

If my interpretation is correct then getting around this requires either
Microsoft change their code or your mail server accepts all of the addresses
or you ensure that all addresses in the list are valid.

Yes, I got hit by a spammer using my Worldmail to send out junk email. Egads.

So what do I do? I restricted his IP address, but nothing will stop him
from switching it to something else.

I found this on the FAQ:

***How can I prevent unauthorized relaying through my WorldMail server?

***You can configure the WorldMail server to reject relayed messages (mail
going ***outside your server) by

But... I'm a newbie, and I don't know how to do this! Any suggestion?

and recently stopped. I am not sure what change. Using this method I can
get a successful registration but the server will not respond to an "intro

Subject: Migrating mail accounts

Hi!
I hope you may help me.
We need to migrate all of our 850 mail accounts (WorldMail Server v.2.0) to
a new server.
What we have to do ?

1- Install Windows NT server in the new server.
2- Install WorldMail
3- Install additional licenses
4- Migrate accounts (how to do it ?)

It's no possible to restore a NT backup in to the new server because the
current server and the new one are different( one is Compaq 166MHz and the
other an IBM NetFinity 5000).
Thanks for any tips and hints.

Rich,
 thanks for your help !
When you export registry data to a file using nibl does it include all
information needed to import it on another server ?
I mean not only directories but user passwords, info, config, etc.

Hi,
Better yet, have a look at
<http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1420hq.html>. It explains exactly how
to move from one server to another. Keep in mind that this procedure
assumes directory locations will be the same on each machine. If the new
machine will have a different directory structure, you will need to make
the appropriate changes within the nibl export before importing it into the
new server.

Is this something that can't be done? I have tried to do the same thing as the

please tell us how to do it.

Does anyone know what the maximum file size for messages and attachments?
Also... how and where is this changed?

We want users to be able to get mail addressed to both
user at server.domain dot org and user at domain dot org. We have an MX record
(domain.org) that points to the host (A) record - host.domain.org. Mail
addresses to user at domain dot org works fine but mail addresses to
user at host.domain dot org loops and is refused.

One last question. We would like to prevent relaying but want all of our
users to be able to send and receive mail both when locally connected and
when connected via one of several ISPs.

Your help is sincerely appreciated!

1. I beleive that there is a per server coniguration for max attachment size
(properties of the server or internet mail), and a per user limit (advanced
tab?).

2. Is this possible? user at server.domain dot org?? Wouldn't it actually be
user at subdomain.domain dot org?

3. This is the one I can give a little more help:
a long time ago I asked the same question and someone told me that I should
use NTmail as a filtering software (actually NTmail is a another
smtp/pop3/imap server). NTmail would work as a proxy between port 25 (smtp)
and the Worldmail server (you must configure it into another port). It
seems that under NTmail you can set wich users are allowed to SEND email, so
if the FROM: field is true-user at mydomain dot com then it is allowed to be sent.
Kinda stupid you might say but those spameers are actually some sort of
robots, so this might very well stop it.
I thought about another option, there is some sort of standard that
requieres the email clients to FIRST check the pop3 sever (remeber that pop3
DOES use userid/password), when a user is validated its ip address is
remembered, only after that it can send emails through the smtp server (the
smtp server only allows the valid ip address to send emails).
I beleive Worldmail does not have this feature... or does it?

Just ideas,
 Andrew McClymont

C: to the D: drive. I edited the the exported settings document to change
all references or "C:\Program Files\WorldMail" to "D:\Worldmail" The
mailboxes are all in the proper locations, but the console reports them as
all being empty, even though they have messages in them! Click the user,
click the "Advanced" tab, the user mailbox location is reported correctly,
except it shows "O kb" in the directory. Users get a "wrong message store"
error when they try to log in. Help??!

Go to <http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1588hq.html> and follow the
instructions there -- this is what is called a POP3 referral.

I have done this with *limited* success.

To set up a new address book in Netscape Messenger:

Description: WorldMail Directory server
LDAP Server: poirot.impeccable.org.uk
Search Root: ou=impeccable.org.uk, o=Home,c=uk
Port Number: 389
Don't show more than: 100 results
[all other options left blank on both property pages]

(note the space in the search root string. I don't know if this is
significant, but it is what is used in the WorldMail LDAP configuration
so I made sure it was the same here).

Once I've done this, I see a listing of the WorldMail users in the
Address Book (if it doesn't, put a * in the search bar and hit return).

That's the good news. The bad news is that searching doesn't really
work, and the ldap server appears regularly to die (once that has
happened, when doing a search I get a message "Failed to bind to
'WorldMail Directory Server' due to LDAP error 'Can't connect to the
LDAP server' (0x5B)".
You can then go to the WorldMail Management Centre and restart the LDAP
service, but it shouldn't really happen IMHO).

I think the LDAP server in WorldMail needs a bit of sorting out.

As far as I remember ... the LDAP server in Worldmail Server began life as a
port of the University of Michigan (UMich) SLAPD process.
I think that some extra functions might have been added (was there a Eudora
Phonebook Server bolted in) - anyway - you could possibly download the
latest and greatest version of the UMich software and see if it helps
[assuming that they have released an NT version].
I think that Worldmail Server itself uses LDAPv2 to talk to the LDAP server
... so it might be possible to replace one directory server with another.

Subject: Migrating from Worldmail 2.0 to Exchange 5.5 - Converting existing mail on Worldmail Server ?
Date: Wed, 21 Jun 2000 15:26:06 -0400

We have thrown in the towel waiting for a new version of Worldmail. I plan
on moving 50 users over to Exchange 5.5 during 4th of July weekend.

Has anyone had success converting existing messages on the Worldmail server
to Exchange ?
I doubt that Exchange an import messages from the \mailboxs folder for all
users.

I know I can read messages using Notepad, but if there is an attachment
associated with the email conversion will not work. That is why I plan on
doing this over the weekend, to limit the chance of having to get the
messages resent.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi John,
we are about to do the same thing, we evaluated ms-Exchange but it has too
many features we won't be using. We plan to move to NTmail wich has
built-in anti-spam features, a major problem lately.
Anyway, the person in charge of the migration once told me that Exchange can
import Lotus cc:mail data, and that Worldmail can export to cc:mail format.
Again, I haven't checked it out, but it could be a solution.

There must be a program in the net that downloads the email from your
worldmail server and then uploads it to you exchange server. It could easly
be done, since a major flaw of the SMTP protocol allows you to put any email
in the from and to fields. Anyway, there must be an app somewhere.

Another solution would be to check out what does that Worrldmail
command-line utility exports, I beleive its called nibl.exe.

Best of luck!
-Andy

Sorry about the delay.
Actually what made us choose NTmail was its anti-spam features. Even if an
anti-spam feature is not there you can code it with its programming language
(actually I'm about to check out that scripting language). The liked a-ok
the non-web-based interface, altough I still like Worldmail much more.
We only checked NTmail, iMail and Post.Office... actually we didn't payed
much attention to post.office since it has no anti-spam features built-in.
Bear in mind, that there are anti-spam add-ons for post.office.

We are looking for one product that gives us the whole solution, we don't
want to start adding plug-ins from different companies. Doing that usually
ends up in a disaster... well, that's my opinion.

Sorry I wasn't of any help. Be lucky!

Andrew,

I just saw your message and wanted to ask you about your choice of
NTMail. We're about to migrate away from WorldMail too and looked
closely at NTMail and iMail. So far, we're leaning towards iMail
mostly b/c of its support for SMTP-AUTH, SSL for Web access, and what
we find to be a better non-web-based admin interface. NTMail (esp
with JUCE add-on is admittedly better with respect to mail relay
and spam issues (and a few others areas), but we hope to use SMTP-AUTH
to avoid need for some of that.

Would you mind telling me what other products you looked at and why
you selected NTMail in the end?

Thanks,

Brian

I'm about to code such a utility:
"it will GET from one pop3 server the emails of a user, and SEND it to a
smtp server. the pop3 server will be your actual pop3 server and the smtp
server shall be your new server. The only info lost will be the original
date/time of the message, although I will embed a first line into each
message saying something like: 'This message was originally written
1/Jul/200 at 13:45'"

Let me know if you (or anybody) is interested in this!

Wish me luck!!

Andrew,

Thanks for the quick response. Hope all goes well with your move to NTMail.
I considered NTMail as an option as well as IMail, but group scheduling was
a high priority and I know it will not be used fully, but it was time to
move on.

I did run through "nibl" and it exports everything, but the actual mail. As
you suggested I will look for a file conversion utility. I was able to
locate a site via ccmail called binarytree.com that has a conversion utility
and hope to hear back from them as well.

Exchange does have a Source Extractor Utility that allows me to script the
conversion. I didn't see this before, but will look closely as it appears
to convert messages and attachments.

Our firewall has some nice Spam features, but Worldmail didn't have enough
and we ended up on the ORBS list for a day until I was able to fix.

I just had a server crash, but managed to get a complete backup before
formatting the drive. Now that worldmail is reinstalled, I'd like to put
it back with all the addresses and setup that I had before.

I've looked for a file or files that have this info but can't find it.
I've even gone as far as deleteing the directory and putting the old copy
in, which still works, but gives the current setup, so there must be a
config file outside of the worldmail directory.

Anyone tried/done this?

Keith,
I believe the accounts are stored in the NT registry and the nibl utility
would need to be used off a full backup of the server to export the addresses

and then install them onto the new system. That is how we migrated to a new
server and it seemed to do the trick.

So if I don't have a backup (I have a winzip copy of the c-drive), then I'm
screwed?
