Hello Andrew,
I think your assessment is right - it does look like you have a 10-user
add-on upgrade key.

I purchased from buyonet.com what was supposed to be the 10 user base
package for Worldmail 2.0.  What I believe I received was a 10 user ADD-ON
package, but try as I might, I cannot convince buyonet.com that this is the
case. If you could please review my findings and provide your assessment
of the situation I would be extremely grateful.

FINDING NO 1
The program installation progresses without complaining, including
seemingly accepting the Serial No and Activation Key that were provided by
buyonet.com.
When I run the program for the first time my “Internet Mail” icon is
displayed as inactive (struck out with a red line).
Examining the Worldmail “License Status” window reveals that no entries are
recorded in that window. The serial number dialogue box displays the text
“no details”.
Attempting to enter (ie re-enter) the supplied Serial Number and Activation
Key results in the message “Error attempting to set license”. It would
seem that I have in fact typed in a valid set of numbers at this stage
because if I retry & change any character in the supplied strings, I get
the different message response “Invalid License Number”.

FINDING NO 2
When I install Worldmail in its EVALUATION mode everything seems to
work. The “License Status” window reports “EVALUATION UNLIMITED users
BASE, options … etc.
I then try to enter my supplied Serial Number and Activation key at the
“License Status” window. This data entry is accepted and creates a second
line in the “License Status” window which reads “<<my activation key>> 10
user ADD-ON, option C”.
The program continues to operate for a brief time and then fails. (I
suspect this is because the EVALUATION process is really out of its use-by
date).

I have tried this on 6 different computers on two different networks using
NT4 and W2k and have had identical results every time.

To me it seems patently obvious I have received an ADD-ON pack rather than
the Base Package. Buyonet.com say that when they install using the same
Serial No and Activation key that “… everything seems ok”. But just how
far they went before coming to that conclusion is not clear.

I would be so grateful for any feedback from experienced users that
corroborates my conclusions that I could then pass on to buyonet.com in the
hope that I can finally convince them of my problem. As you can imagine
this has been a disastrous introduction to Worldmail for me.

All attempts to reach Qualcomm and Eudora have drawn blanks.

Best regards,
Andrew Happ

All of that code comes from what used to be called N-PLEX from ISOCOR
[nowadays called IMS from Critical Path].
The core IMAP4 and POP3 code are all in the same executable - IMSD.EXE
It was tested at the time of its release with IMAP4 clients - including
Outlook Express
As far as I remember, N-PLEX was the first commercial server product to
support IMAP4 and considerable work was done to ensure interoperability both
through careful checking of the standards and attending interop events.

I guess it is possible that something has changed within those mail clients
over the years that might prevent it working with them now - [since the code
for WorldMail is now pretty old by internet standards] ... but I would be
surprised if it failed with mainstream clients.
If you are having problems then use ISOTRACE to see what is going on and
feel free to post traces for analysis.

Thanks to all that replied. I guess I should explain why I was asking this:

I was setting up SquirrelMail (http://www.squirrelmail.org) and one of the
configuration options was for what kind of IMAP server the mail server is
using. The options were WU (Washington University), Cyrus and a couple
others I've never heard of before. I thought mabey WorldMail was based off
of one of those.

Anyway, I chose "other" and it all worked.

Cheers & Beers,

Matt

Subject: repeated EHLO commands

Over the last 2 days my logs are full of entries starting with the EHLO
command.

For example: SMTP EHLO tomts9-srv.bellnexxia.net from host 209.226.175.53

They all come from bellnexxia.net, but from many different hosts.

I am guessing this is attempted spamming or relaying? Anyone else seeing
this, have any idea what this is?

Like most NT services, you can use NET START and NET STOP

[I suspect that you can also use IMSD -STOP and IMSD -START ... try
IMSD -HELP]

You need to apply these commands to each of the services.
NET START with no parameters will list all of the services with their
long-form name.
Services with SPACES in their names need to be "QUOTED".

I suspect that something like this would work for you...
C:
CD \"program files"\ISOCOR\SMTP
IMSD -STOP
SMTPD -STOP
CD some other appropriate places
RMAP -STOP
LDAPTHING -STOP

or
NET STOP "SMTP SERVICE NAME"
NET STOP "INTRENET MAILBOX SERVICE"
etc
[I made up the names above because I don't remember what they are called in
WorldMail.

After initially being told by my ISP that ETRN protocol was supported, I
have set up a Worldmail Server that’s nearly ready to deploy. The ISP has

now changed its mind telling me that ETRN is not supported. I am
considering changing my ISP to one that does support ETRN. Before I begin

the trauma of doing this I would like to be sure that Worldmail will meet
all of my requirements. These include:
· We would use Eudora for local client access to the Worldmail
 client
mailboxes.

· A large proportion of both in and out emails contains attachments

that have an average size of 2 to 3 GB.

· For record keeping purposes we need to maintain two global
catch-all stores, in addition to the individual client mailboxes. One of
these is for incoming email and the other is for outgoing email. I can see

how I could do this with incoming mail using the Worldmail function “send

copy of all mail to:”, and then accessing this mail when required as a
single IMAP store. But I am unclear how to achieve this with the outgoing

mail.

· The two global stores referred to above need to be maintained as

permanent records of correspondence as well as providing a one-stop-shop to

review all incoming or outgoing email traffic. (There are no email privacy

issues at stake in this installation). At some point it will be necessary

to strip the attachments from mail in the Worldmail stores. (Permanent
record of the attachment content is not required). There does not seem to

be a function within Worldmail to allow separation of attachments from the

body of the email. I can see there is no problem on the Eudora client
side, where attachments are automatically stripped to the data
directory. But it does seem to be a problem in the Worldmail IMAP store
environment.

I would be grateful for any reassurance that the uncertainties raised above

can be resolved within the Worlmail environment.

Everything should work fine except for the outgoing-mail-store. I'm not sure
how that would work.

Do you by any chance have any experience with Perl? One cool feature about
Worldmail is that you can write your own "robots" (programs) to work with
Worldmail. If you can't get Worldmail to store all outgoing mail, you could
try writing something that will.

Our domain server had to be rebuilt two days ago and part of rejoining
the PC's to the domain is that they lose the profile setting which
include the management console for Worldmail. The mail server still
functions properly but I have no access to the console. Can this console
be installed without having to reconfigure the mail server? How? Thanks
so much for time in helping me out, one does not want to have to go
through this rebuild process to many time! The worldmail server program
in running on Windows NT 4.0 workstation. Thanks again. Kirk

Subject: Moving WorldMail onto new server
Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2002 15:14:50 -0500

Hello list,

We have WorldMail on a very old pc that is starting to die. We need to move
the WorldMail and database onto a Windows NT backup server that will in 6
months become a Windows 2000 backup server. The dying pc presently has
nothing of importance other than WorldMail.

I have seen the document in Eudora help regarding nibl - and sent support an
email which has not been returned, so I come to this list for help.

1. I cannot find anywhere a list of the switch settings for nibl (let alone
the nibl routine itself). Can anyone help here?

2. When moving WorldMail with the nibl routine, does this:
	a. move the database to the new server, and then we have to do a reinstall
of Worldmail?
	b. move WorldMail including the database over to the new server, nothing
else is required?
	c. copy the database to the new server, and then we have do a reinstall of
WorldMail?
	d. copy WorldMail including the database over to the new server, noting
else is required?

(You can see from above, I have been too busy studying Microsoft certs! ;-)

3. What happens to my non-default settings when I do this? Is there a file
that I need to move/import/export?

4. Is there a better way to do what I want to accomplish?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

See "Moving a server" for some nibl uses.

http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1420hq.html

We did this a few months ago. It went OK.

Had to manually do a few things to clean up afterward. We reinstalled on
the new server, copied in the user directories from the old drive, then
reimported the user database.

We went through and documented EVERY screen to be sure we had
everything.

Plus, keeping the old box around, (but off the network) isn't a bad idea
until you are sure everything is working. You can then compare settings
if something isn't working just right.

The only problem we had moving from NT 4.0 to 2000 was that after the
upgrade our Mail server became an open relay. We had it restricted by
IP, the same way we did on NT 4.0. Worldmail ignored any and all IP's we
put in there. We got reamed by spammers and blackhole listed. We ended
up going to iMail.

Good luck

About a year ago I moved the Worldmail server 2.0 from one NT4 server to
another one.
I found the nibl method too cumbersome, instead of that I messed with the
registry.

DO NOT MESS WITH THE REGISTRY UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE MESSING WITH!!!

First I installed the Worldmail keeping everything default, the same way as
it was on the old server.
(this is crucial, especially when it comes to directory locations!)

After that I copied the mailbox-folders for all users from the old server
to the new one.

Then by using regedit.exe (not regedt32.exe!) I exported the
HKLM\Software\ISOCOR key with all its subkeys on the old server to a file
called hklmsoft.reg and by double clikking on this file from the new server
I imported it to the right place.

I don't remember what other registry keys I exported/imported the same way,
but I think this is the only registry key is that relevant to the email
user accounts.

The whole thing won't take more than couple of minutes.

Geza

P.S.: DO NOT MESS WITH THE REGISTRY UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE MESSING WITH!!!

A few questions:

You're still able to send mail though, right?

Does the same error message appear when you are sending to this list?

Does the same error message appear if you try sending to an IP address,
instead of the domain?

Also, does 3.in-addr.arpa.confluentasp.com mean anything to you?

There is the old issue with Worldmail and Win2K DNS registry keys - but that
should not be relevant here because the trace seems to show that it has
found a name ok.

Is there a chance that the netmask or gateway (IP stuff) have not been
changed correctly when IP address was changed?
One way to help stop this ....
from command line
NSLOOKUP
set type=MX
confluenttech.com

and then see which DNS server returns the results.

You can also experiment by using the mail address checking tool from the
Management Center (easier than submitting messages) - right click on
Internet Mail and choose Test Mail Routing (I think that is what it was
called).
[keep running ISOTRACE as you did here - with trace level up to the giddy
heights of Verbose ... or one higher if you attack the registry ...]

Our Worldmail server has worked fine for several years, but we just recently
were forced to change the IP address of the server. As the attached trace
file shows, a DNS error is now generated when trying to send mail. If I
configure Worldmail to relay through another mail server, it works but this
is not an option because of security issues.

All other programs that use DNS work fine. Worldmail itself worked
flawlessly until the IP change. Any suggestions?

The WorldMail installer has an option to install just the management center.

Does anyone know if there is another format for this manual other than the
DynaText? The version that comes with WorldMail is so old that it does not
permit double-sided printing and the interface is ugly.

Better yet, does anyone have these manuals in another format (.PDF?) that
they can share?

Thanks,

Rick

Hello all,

HELP! We have been blocked by ORDB.ORG as a relay agent. We have been having
problems with virus-laden emails and suspect that this is the cause of the
block.

I opened up our WM Server Internet Mail/Security/Message Relaying and have
the following in that section:

Allow access only to these addresses: 10.6.0.0 255.255.0.0 (Our internal
Network is 10.6.X.X based).

I would have thought that this would take care of the message relaying, but
apparently it has not.

Any other thoughts to block message relaying?

Thanks,

Rick

If it's a Win2K server, check the SMTP virtual server in IIS - we had it
off but no entries - left a relay open that the fools at ORDB.ORG "found"
and made my life miserable for a week or so. We added an entry and then
disabled it and life is good again..

Hi Rick,

If you have any Virus defense for email server installed on your email
server, that can create symptom like yours. You have to redirect/change the
port assignment for the virus defense and email server as well.
Some of the changes has to be done through registry, some in the
application configuration.

If I can remember well the virus defense (webshield) is the one that have
to be configured to the standard SMTP and POP3 ports and the worldmail
server has to have some fictious ports to the webshield.

So the result of the configuration will be such, that no matter where the
email server receives email from to be sent or delivered (from the Internet
or from your firm), that email has to pass the virus shield first, but once
the email passed the shield it will be passed along to the email server
through a made up port.

I am sure you can find help on this subject on the website of your virus
defense software.

I had our worldmail server setup similar to yours and it worked fine until
I installed McAffee's Webshield for email server. Next week we also got
blocked by several spam prevention websites, that's when I found out about
the port config changes.

Hi,

This question has come up before, check this article on the eudora
support.
http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2339hq.html

WorldMail will not accept the 10.0.0.0 range. You need to switch your
Internal IP range to either the 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (172.16/12
prefix) or the 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (192.168/16 prefix) which
WorldMail will accept.

I'm running Worldmail 2.0.

I have one user (with Eudora client) who receives the message:
"ERR mailbox locked by a POP3 session"
from time to time.

I'm almost positive that only one client is accessing that mailbox at a
time(we have a very small shop.)

The only way I have found to fix the problem is to Stop/Start the
Worldmail Message Store WinNT service. That allows the user to download
their email instantly.

Is anyone aware of a fix for this problem, or a better/easier solution?

Is there some sort of "timeout" parameter I could set in the server to
free up the mailbox after a couple of minutes?

Is this more likely a Eudora client problem (not freeing up the mailbox
after a download) or a Worldmail server problem?

Thanks,
Terry

This is most likely due to abnormal termination of the client. Ask him/her
if he/she is experiencing periodic crashes when downloading mail. That is
the most common cause of this.

The server should timeout the connection in approximately 5 minutes
allowing the user to log in again. Rather than stopping.restarting the
service, you could open the management Center, then look under Current
Connections>Message Store and right click the hung connection and select
Close connection. that will free up the lock on the POP store.

Also, right click Internet Mail, select Configure Server, then under the
Mailboxes tab, you can adjust the idle client timeout. If you have no IMAP
users, you can set it pretty much as low as you like, but if you have users
using IMAP, it is not advisable to set it too low. If you do, IMAP clients
will spend a lot of time re-authenticating every time they need to re-open
the connection.

Actually, since he is using 10.6.x.x network, it may work. I believe that
the 10.0.x.x range is the only one that WorldMail barfs on. Try using a
netmask of 255.25.255.0 and see what happens.

What do you all know about reporting in Worldmail? I'd like to be able

Any thoughts?

Sorry, that was what I meant -- you had originally mentioned that you used
255.255.0.0 as the subnet. I have gotten it to work with 10.1.0.0
255.255.255.0, so I thought it might work with the 10.6 as well, thinking
it was the 0.0 that WorldMail did not like. Oh well...

I've been having a problem lately with the Worldmail SMTP service stopping.
I am able to restart it from the management center. There's nothing obvious
in the SMTP logs. I had already been planning on moving Worldmail to a
different server when this problem started, so I went ahead and moved it,
but is still happening - sometimes a week between occurrences, but
sometimes it will stop 2 or 3 times in one day. We are running McAfee SMTP
Shield to scan incoming mail before it gets to Worldmail. It has been
running for about 4 years with hardly a glitch until now. Any ideas?

Hi,

We have been Worldmail users for years. As the product
is not being further developped (unfortunately) we
have now switched to a different product. If some of
you are looking for another product too I have a
recommendation for you: CommuniGate Pro by Stalker
Software. We are using this product now for about 3
months and are really happy with it. It offers about
anything you can think of and is very stable. Support
is also very good (on a mailing list).
Tools for making the switch easy are also included
(creating mailboxes and moving existing mail).

Dan,

We have seen the same behavior with the SMTP service stopping and have
not been able to locate the culprit. The logs are useless.

We also had a serious problem for 2-3 days with the Internet Message
Store service stopping. We eventually traced that down to a single
incoming mail message. Whenever the user with this mail message in
their inbox checked their mail, BOOM the IMS would crash. We removed
the message from their inbox and rebuilt their inbox and the problem
went away.

It was sheer luck that we found the problem file.

The strange thing is that the message that was crashing IMS looks like a
perfectly normal text email message. I have quarantined it.

For the captured message ... can you post (an edited version) to see if we
can find which problem it was.
Just the headers and MIME separators should be enough (can overtype mail
addresses etc) - but watch out for unusual characters in original.

Other thought ... can you run ISOTRACE on the machines that are failing -
and enable verbose SMTP/IMS tracing - this will still be running when the
mail server stops ... but you should get a better idea of what it was doing
just before dying.
Don't trace to file though ... because if it runs for months (like usual)
and you have verbose tracing running to file then you will run out of disk
space.

Has anyone run into a problem with the auto-reply message through the
Personal Account Manager web interface?

The users go through the PAM, setup their auto-reply message and upon
returning they enter the PAM to remove the message only to find the message
is no longer there. The users think auto-reply is turned off because there
is no message but senders still receive the auto-reply message.

I am able to clear it by going through the MMC and clearing the message but
this defeats the purpose of letting the user administer their own
auto-reply.
I notice that when the auto-reply message is off the default "Get message
from a file" is bulleted with no pathname specified. And when auto-reply is
on the "Specify message text" is bulleted with the text the user input.

This feature was working until recently and as far as I know there have not
been any changes to this system.

install one of the later model mail servers.

Also, is there any way to set logs to show specific information about why
there are 85 rejected SMTP connections (in the stattistics window) instead
of just showing that there was?

We discovered this same problem a year ago on our system, and we were told,
at that time, by Eudora support, that it was a bug in the web interface, and
it could not be fixed, until issues were resolved between Eudora and the
original programmers. So we have told our email constituents that they
will have to contact us administrators to go in manually and delete the auto
reply messages.

I don't know how you had the function working OK for you for some time. We
never had it work at all for us.

This feature was working until recently and as far as I know there
have not been any changes to this system.

I have been getting the following error message for the
past few weeks at random time intervals:

The application, , generated an application error The error
occurred on 3/21/2002 @ 12:34:10.671 The exception generated
was c0000005 at address 0042e2ad (<nosymbols>)

Can anyone tell me how to get rid of this problem?

yes! that's one of the ones i meant, but wasnt' sure

similar problem)
the fix we have done, which seems to last for a while
at a time, is to :
1. make sure the worldmail service & PH2 service
are stopped. (usually, worldmail service stops
from this error, anyways.)
2. delete every file in c:\temp directory..
(usually consisting of qX10 qX11,etc &
nibltmp.txt)
-if you cannot delete everyfile in there,
you may also have to stop the 'worldmail
ldap/web gateway' service also. (it's been a
while since i've had to do this, so i can't
exactly remember if you have to stop that
service, too, or not.)
3. then re-start those services. sometimes it
also requires a re-boot to fix the problem
correctly, and that seems to fix it for even longer
periods of time.

The other possible problem is that it's running out
of virtual memory or ram when someone tries to send
too huge a file/ vice versa.
i think you want to make your VM about the same size
as the amount of ram you have. (and the more the
better, of course!)

if you find any better explanations/solutions, would
you mind passing them on to me/us, if you get the
chance?

We are moving to a DHCP network and will need to reassign the mail server
address. What issues do I need to be concerned about?

Once that is accomplished I will be moving World Mail to a 2000
server. Are there any issues that I need to aware of here? I understand
that World Mail will work on 2000 but there are some issues that have to be
resolved.

Any help is appreciated.

If your mail server is known outside your own network (i.e. you receive mail
directly from other SMTP servers on the internet [perhaps other than your
ISP]) then you will need a permanent address for the mail server. Could be
done with dual NICs.
Any desktops that were connecting to a numeric address for the mail server
will need updating.
Your internal dynamic address for the mail server will have to be
resolvable.
I suggest that you grant the mail server its own address - makes life much
easier.
IP address relay checking - your configuration of these will have to change
to match the new addresses.

There are a couple of issues - I believe that both are documented on
Qualcomm site.
a) DNS details - Microsoft moved the registry keys that were used to hold
addresses of DNS systems - so you have to add them back by hand
b) Management Center GUI has a problem with presenting one of its menus (I
suspect it is the menu that can change depending on what you click on).
Work round my not selecting that menu!

I've never used WorldMail on a DHCP server, so I can't be of much help
there.

My company has been running WorldMail on Windows 2000 Server for nearly a
year now, and we haven't experiences any problems. There are a few quirks,
such as the management interface freezing when you click on the toolbars
(doesn't affect the mailer service though). You'll also have to edit the
server's Registry with DNS information. Eudora has a support article
regarding the Registry edit at:

Subject: Distribution list "Advise" message

What do I do if I'm the owner of a distribution list and I get a message of "Please Advise" when
subscribing/unsubscribing list members? it doesn't matter if I or someone else sent it.

The list type is closed. On the message there is no instructions for the owner to do anything. What you guys
do?

Thanks,
Elliott

SMTPD errors occur on rare occasion on our server, as well, and have for
years. It's always been a matter of stopping and starting the service,
or rebooting the server. However, if you are seeing the error often,
one major cause is another SMTP product running on your server, such as
IIS. When you install IIS, it installs it's own SMTP service.
Evidently (and per Eudora Worldmail Support) multiple SMTP-type services
cannot coexist. The answer was to disable the service, whether by
manually disabling within the Services Control Panel or by
unininstalling the application.
