Subject: Hello!
Hello all,
It's great to have found this list, as support for WorldMail in the past
(in my experience) has been hard to come by, other than on usenet.
I'm running WorldMail 2.0, and have had a ton of fun with the aliasing
bug (where aliases to external internet email addresses are useless,
because attempts to email to those aliases from the internet are
rejected as unauthorized relay attempts).
In the end, the answer was "This will be fixed in the next version."
My question is, has anyone heard the scoop or rumors about a new version
or patch that fixes this problem?
Thanks,
-Jeff

Subject: Problems with WorldMail
I have set up a bunch of lists using WorldMail. After some initial problems
they seem to be working pretty well.
First, my problem - WorldMail is not sending out my welcome message when
users enroll - they have to send a "info <list>" command to get that file
returned. I can't find anything to suggest that I need to do anything more
than provide the name of the file that should be returned - any help would
be appreciated!!
Second - some (basic?) questions... Can more than one response returned to
a subscription - I would like to send a couple of different files (the
typical help file and another message). What other robots are available for
WorldMail?
How can you add the headers to the outgoing message like was done with the
partial digest received from this list?
Thanks in advance for help with *any* of this.

Subject: LDAPTEMPLATE.CONF
Hi to everyone,
I am trying to manipulate this file in my WorldMail 2.0 Server so that people who use a Web browser see something like this:
Organizational Unit: abc.org
Entries in this organizational unit:
Last Name First Name Mailbox
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Andrews Carl J. cja at abc dot org
Brown Robin W. rwb at abc dot org
... etc.
I've been able to isolate the issue to having to change the parameters of the "item searchact" command. I'm running into a few problems.
1. Does this command sort? (by last name, for instance)
2. cannot get it to display more than two fields
3. The first name of a person, which the Internet Directory stores internally as the "cn" attribute, is not recognized by this command.
Any help or comments from your LDAP experience would be helpful. The ultimate goal is simple: any member of my organization should be able to find a current listing of e-mail addresses if they know the person's last name and first name.
Thanks again.
PS:
Unless I'm missing something obvious, I find the documentation for the LDAP server to be atrocious. Have also looked in Books Online, but find it lacking.

Thanks for the update. I have seen several references to Isocore in WM's documentation. What is their relationship, do you know?
Also have a question to everyone about the "protocol" in this mailing list.
Is hitting the "reply" button going to work? Because it seems to me when I tried that it was replying only to the author, not to the group. On the other hand, if I click the hot link I lose the ability to easily quote material. What is the recommende
d approach?

I've left messages such as these on several groups. I was surprised to find few visible meeting grounds for the anti-Microsoft, or as I like to call myself "pro-open standard" e-mailers.
Right now I'm waging a furious battle in a community of about 500 users to prevent us from going to Microsoft Exchange. 98% of these folk are non-techies, and couldn't care less what the solution entails as long as it works and that they can learn it in
less than 15 minutes. Yet the forces of evil are waging the mickeysoft flag.
I have yet to find any usenets that deal with mail servers in general. I browsed through comp.mail.sendmail but I'm not quite sure I understand what they are talking about.
Any other suggestions that might serve as a complement to this one would be very welcome. Of course we all know comp.mail.eudora but in that context talk about mail servers seems out of place.

As far as I know, most of the WorldMail server was written by Isocore. All Qualcomm does is put their own wrapper around the Isocore program and resell it as "WorldMail".
You'll never get that out of Eudora Support, though. I found this out through trying to get support on the worldmail aliasing bug, when Qualcomm wouldn't give me any idea as to when the bug would be fixed - it was because they didn't know, and they woul
dn't
let people know that they don't code their own software! Personally, I found worldmail support completely useless.
Thankfully, I made a great contact at Qualcomm in one of their development managers who actually gives me straight answers on things.

Just hit "reply to all" and you'll be fine (though the poster you're replying to will get 2 copies of the mail. Oh well :)

I believe the Eudora web site has some white papers which discuss
open-standards-based servers versus proprietary ones (which may
include standards gateways). I know I've seen some independent
analysis as well. Generally, servers which are Internet standards at
their core are easier to set up and keep running, and scale better.
It is usually easier to migrate from one to another, if you find one
you like better. Since other systems have to translate to and from
Internet standards, chances for corruption are much higher. I've
seen a lot of problems with servers which rewrite messages into a
native format, then try to regenerate the standard form. They
usually make a right mess, especially when a message uses one of the
newer elements of a standard.
If your people want a solution they can just install and run, my
advice would be to try out demo versions of a few of the
standards-based servers and see which ones are easiest. Besides
WorldMail, there are lots of other ones, such as Post.Office from
Software.Com, pmdf from Innosoft, etc.

Isocor makes the core engines (SMTP, POP, IMAP) included in
WorldMail. Qualcomm adds its own LDAP server which uses the
Sleepycat database for significantly increased speed, and a mini-ACAP
server which supports auto-configuration by Eudora clients (both
Light and Pro, Mac and Windows). This last feature is pretty neat:
you create a new account for a user in WorldMail, install Eudora on
his or her desktop, click on "auto configure", enter a usercode and
password, and the user is set up and ready to go. Eudora fetches
(using ACAP) a long list of settings, customized for that user.

I don't think it is any secret that the core WorldMail engines are
licensed from Isocor. There are a press releases about it on
Qualcomm's web site.
I think there are some legal or other issues to be resolved regarding
the update, but I believe they are being worked on. In the meantime,
if you want, you can try going to Isocor's web site
<http://www.isocor.com> and downloading the latest N-Plex update, and
replacing the .EXE files in WorldMail with the ones you downloaded.
This isn't supported, so if you do this, be sure to back everything
up, and only rename the WorldMail files, don't delete them. Also,
I'd try one file at a time. If anything goes wrong, fall back. Be
sure to stop the service before replacing its file. You'll probably
have to leave the SMTP file alone.

Hi. I have worldmail installed in 4 different locations and it is working
quite well. 2 questions:
#1
Is there any way to mass mail all the users on a particular Wolrdmail server
easily? I know there is list management but it looks like you have to add
each user manually which would be a pain (400 users).
I.E. The server is in a company and the company wants to broadcast a message
to all of its employees.
#2
Personal Account Manager - The java applet that allows users to change their
password, etc. Has anyone ever tried to use this through a firewall? I
tried opening up port 8888 on the firewall (both ways) and no dice. The
java applet loads but when you hit 'submit' to send your username and pw it
returns "unknown error".

This is definately possible. You need to open a second port - but I don't know
off hand which port that is. If memory serves me correctly, you can try
unblocking 4299 and 389 as well. Eudora support should be able to tell you, if
it's not already in the online manuals.

For PAM to work you also need to open port 4201 which is the management port for the
Message Store Server. Port 4200 is the management port for the Mail Server.

I know Port 389 is the default for LDAP. I've been playing with a freeware LDAP browser (Wax500) and it uses 389 to retrieve information from the directory. I understand Eudora Pro 4.x also uses this service, although I do not know this from personal ex

By the way, if you have the online documentation on an NT 4.0 Server, be careful when trying to print the online docs. It has already crashed two different servers for me. Blue screen and everything. I thought in NT this was not supposed to happen ("O
S runs on protected memory, applications can't crash it," yeah, yeah).

The bug is that when you create an alias that points to an email address that is somewhere on the internet (not on your local network), and then
someone out on the internet emails that alias, they get their message bounced back to them with an error stating that relaying is not allowed.
WorldMail 2.0 incorrectly rejects the email as a relay attempt.
The work around is to turn off relay blocking for the destination network of the aliased email (which compromises security and allows anyone to spam
that network), or have your alias forward to a mailing list with the destination address being the only member of the mailing list (which is messy and
if you have lots of aliases, is a pain to administrate), or to use the "copy-to" fuctionality on an actual mailbox (not an alias, so it uses up
licenses).

having is trying to figure out how to update the shared addressbook on
the server. Each user can see the addressbook on the server since the
ExtraNicknameDirs= command is in the Eudora.ini file on each PC.
But, when I create new users, how does that address book get updated?
There is a .toc file in the same directory and I found if I delete that
it updates automatically by looking at the address book file.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I am not aware of any standard way to automatically update such a
shared address book. Note that you may not really need it if you use
Eudora, since WorldMail supports Ph and LDAP, and all versions of
Eudora use Ph, and new versions also use LDAP.
If you do want to update it, you could probably whip up a batch file
to run the WorldMail bulk load utility to extract a list of users
into a file, and then massage it into addressbook format.
Personally, I'd just use Ph.

I ran into to same problem trying the "item searchact" command but found
another direction that achieved essentially the desired results. I
haven't yet got it to work on the root page but with one extra click on
the Telephone/Email list button you can display more fields. They seem
to always be sorted by the "sn" field.
Modify the "item linkact" line in the Organizational Unit Template
section to something like:
item linkact "Telephone / E-mail List" ""
"?sn,cn,telephonenumber,$btable,valsonly?"
This controls the fields displayed.
You then need to make an Base DN entry in the WorldMail Web Gateway
config like:
ou=abc.org,o«C Org,c=US
This gets you to the mail list quicker.
If you look at the URL displayed after you click the telephone button,
it will give you clues on variations. I tried adding these ideas to the
Base DN and LDAP.CONF lines but didn't get much further.
The LDAP/Ph likes to crash a lot so I rather have the users not know it
is there.

Subject: WorldMail - Default Email Address ?
Hello all,
I'm curious if anyone knows how to configure a domain to have a default
mail address. Now, I know you can configure a domain with an address
which all "undeliverable" messages are sent to, however, using this
method changes the subject and adds a tacky message to the top of the
email.
What I would like to do is have a default address where mail is sent,
without any special modifications to that email - in other words, any
message that is sent to an address that doesn't exist is forwarded on to
this default message in the same method that an alias would forward a
message on.
Anyone know if this is possible?

Subject: Attachment filtering on e-mail lists
We produce software products. We have an e-mail list to which customers
send requests for support. This list includes a dozen or so people who
want to see any messages.
However, customers also often need to send attached data, sometimes tens of
MB in size. It would be nice to siphon this off before forwarding the
remainder of the message to the list recipients (otherwise disk space
disappears very quickly).
The sort of solution I was envisaging was to have the public support
mailing list point to two internal addresses: a shared folder which would
receive the whole message, including attachments; and a second distribution
list which would contain the people who want to read just the text of the
message.
Now, if there was a way of stripping attachments when sending to the second
distribution list, I think I'd be home dry; but I can't see a way to do this.
If anyone has any ideas, I'd be grateful.

My suggestion would be to use an IMAP shared folder. Users can then
configure their clients to not download attachments.

Our office has been running WorldMail for sometime now but we are migrating
to a new server. I found some instructions in the manual about how to
export/import the settings. The problem I am running into is the services
will not start when I reboot the computer after installation. We have had a
number of problems transfering things to our new server so WorldMail has
been installed and re-installed several times (didn't seem to work any of
the times though). There are error messages in the Event Viewer that say
the services failed to respond within a given time period. There are also
messages that say the services failed the license check. Also, if it makes
a difference, for reasons outside of WorldMail the new server will have the
same name on our network as the old server (i.e. serve4). Any thoughts as
to how to solve this problem...WorldMail is the last remaining software that
I need to transfer to our new server. Any help will certainly be
appreciated!

I need to find a source to get a 10 mailbox add-on (for eudora worldmail

The Eudora website store can't email you the key - they have to send it
to you - which would take a week.
The electronic download software places that I tried either don't have
the 10 user add-ons, or the ones who have it also have to send it. Seems
crazy to pay for shipping and wait a week to receive 2 numbers.
Anyone know of a website where I can buy it and download it now?
Also - some sites talk about different types of licenses for the worldmail
server. The eudora site doesn't mention them.
Anyone know what they are talking about?
I have the original 10 mailboxes that came with eudora, then I purchased a
15 user add on.
Now i can't even see any mention of 15 user add ons, and the 10 user add
on is impossible to find!

I have been having a problem where once in a while - maybe once a week or
so - my mail server CPU utilization goes to 100%, and the task manager
shows the SMTPD.exe is taking up 100% CPU. The mail server then stops
transferring mail. Nobody can send or receive mail. When I try to stop the
SMTPD service, I get an error message that it can't be stopped. I reboot
the system, and things go back to normal.
I only have a small load on the server. No mailing lists, 25 users. The
only other service on the server is a reporting tool, webtrends.
My task manager now says system idle time is 380 hours, and SMTPD.exe
only used 3 minutes. (Webtrends used 20 minutes). When the problem pops up,
usually in the middle of the night or on a weekend, and I check, the SMTPD
service takes up many hours of time, and when I check the logs, it is NOT
sending out tons of mail. The mail queue usually has less than 2 messages
any time I check.

When we got our 5000 user lincence for our isp they were able to upgrade
our package over the phone.
It may take an hour or two on the customer support line. Quallcomm is the
only place I know of to purchase any kind of licencing.
For a small mail system I would recommend (now that I've had some
experience with worldmail) Linux Redhat 6.0 operating system, it has
sendmail built in. It will operate as many mail accounts as the server can
handle, and there are no licencing fees because sendmail is covered by the
GNU free source licenceing agreement.

I've experienced this problem too. IMHO it seems to be a problem within NT
itself. Microsoft recomends that NT 4.0 be rebooted once a week. Because NT
uses a registry to keep track of programs and processes the registry grows
while the server is operating, after the registry reaches about 15 Megs NT
starts to "loose it's mind". We here are planning to upgrade our server
from a single processor to a dual processor configuration, hopefuly we will
encounter the 100% cpu bug less frequently by increasing processor headspace.
The number of processes running seem to have little effect as to when the
bug pops up. Our P200, 64 meg server is currently running 46 mail accounts,
7 active lists, web services, ftp services, Macintosh file services, print
server for the domain, and domain access control.
When you installed your server did you install it as a "Primary Domain
Controller" or as a "Standalone Server" because there seems to be a big
diffrence in the stability of domain controller and standalone.
Thats all I could think of off the top of my head this morning.

You may be right.
I have been going about a month between reboots. NT seems to slow down
little by little then eventually gets so sluggish that I have to reboot.
Then it comes back to life for a few weeks. I have it as a standalone
server, service pack 5 is installed.

NIBL doesn't generate many errors at all. It just reports the errors
that the Mail Server reported. So, for example, if you had the Mail
Server Trace program running, you would have seen the same errors
reported by the Mail Servers.
As far errors reported by the Mail Server, they should be pretty
descriptive. The error codes returned at the end of the message are
standard win32 error codes. For example, in the user add command, the
mail server tried to create the directory
"g:\worldmail\SMTP\MailBoxs\jdoe@onecallmedical dot com" and the operating
system returned an error 5 - ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED. So you need to verify
that the directory is valid and the mail server is able to create that
directory. You need to remember, that the mail server is running with a
system account privileges.

It's definitely not broken. It actually is a success/information message
which indicates that your Directory Service has successfully started,
except the program itself doesn't have the correct support to add
messages to the Event Viewer correctly, and that's why you see the error
about the missing description ID.

Subject: Copying WorldMail from one NT to another
My company is trying to set up a new NT Workstation computer as the email
server. We have WorldMail running on an NT Server within our network (it
was dialing an outside ISP to get the email), and would like to copy all
the mailboxes and other settings from the NT Server to our new computer. We
installed WorldMail on the new one. Then we tried copying all the necessary
folders, and everything in the Registry that looked like it had something
to do with WorldMail. We found that WorldMail will not start up when we
start the computer. We have to start everything manually in order to see
the mailboxes, etc.
We thought it had something to do with the error that Gregory Hickel
described, but Henry Avetisyan's message makes that seem unlikely.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Take a look in the documentation at the NIBL utility. It provides a method
to copy all of the settings from one computer to another. When I moved our
installation recently, I ran into a problem entering the serial numbers. I
was just entering the number for the 25 mailbox license we purchased. It is
necessary to first enter the number that you received just for WorldMail and
one mailbox and then the additional licenses.

Subject: Worldmail user restriction problem
Thank You Henry for your previous response (NIBL and error messages now
doing fine :)
My next problem my be out of the scope of Worldmail, but here it goes...
MS Exchange Server allows the administrator to turn off the ability of
individual users from receiving Internet mail and/or attachments while
maintaining Intranet email communications. I need to do this for a group
of users within my organization while keeping them in the same domain. Is
there a way to do this via Worldmail 2.0?
Any hints, clues, or divine insight would be appreciated!

If you are able to start up the services manually then it they must be
configured properly. If the services are set to startup automatically,
then they must report any errors in the Event Viewer why it didn't start
- do you have any errors in the Event Viewer?
Also, when copying files and registry settings from another machine to
another, you need to be careful about the server names. If the machine
names are the same, then there shouldn't be any problems, but you will
have problems when the machine names are different, unless when
importing the registry settings you replaced the old server name with
the new server name.

Unfortunately there is no way to accomplish what you are trying to do in
WorldMail. The only option you have is to disable a user, but then that
user will not be able to receive any mail nor be able to login.

Subject: Here is another interesting problem regarding the IMS.
Lets see who might have an answer to this one. Good story anyway...
Several days ago I received the customary user complaint ("My email is not
working"), and started to investigate the Worldmail server status. I ran
the management console remotely and found the IMS service stopped. So I
restarted the service and all were happy. I thought to myself, the next
time I'm in the server room I'd better check the logs to see what
happened. Five minutes go by and I get another "user notification" (<<<
politically correct term for my weekly net status report). This time I go
straight to the NT Worldmail 2.0 server and find a dear old DrWatson
message for IMS (Internet mail service). I thought to myself that this
system has been stable for a long time, why would IMS crash but leave all
remaining services intact?
(insert possible answer #1 here :)
So I did what any sys admin would do. Noted the logs and rebooted in an
attempt stabilize the system. Two minutes after rebooting the crash occurs
again. Oh sh_!, this is going to be a l o n g night! It was with good
fortune, that one of the primary users having problems contacted me that
very moment to give me another "user notification". I then asked the user
to exit their Eudora client. While they did this I restarted the
IMS. Next I had the user retry logging into the server. As soon as they
hit the return key on the Eudora password validation window the IMS service
shut down again with a DrWatson message. I restarted the IMS service once
again. I let all other users into the system except the one user that
appeared to have the most troubles. The system stayed up and stable for
over two hours. Then I tried the same guinea pig user again. BAM! The IMS
service dies again! -You should be saying to yourself "how can a user
logging into the Worldmail server crash IMS?".
(insert possible answer #2 here :)
To make a long story shorter... I found that the user's mailbox .DAT file
was corrupted. I removed all of the files from the User's mailbox and then
let the user logon to the server. No more problems for the user (except
for the fact that he would like his old messages back in his mailbox. Does
anyone know how to insert files back into a mailbox folder without
corrupting the .DAT file?
(insert possible answer #3 here :)
The END
Thanks again!

Does anyone know what we can do? We have about 45 IMAP mailboxes and only
a few personal mailboxes. The In, Out, and Trash mailboxes are not real full.
Please help. This all happened after installing WorldMail. Before, we
were using an outside ISP set up as pop3.
All users have at least 64 MB Ram. The errors are occuring the most on a
new Dell 128 MB Ram machine.

Probably a conflict with the version of mfc42.dll. Try reinstalling eudora.

Subject: Re: Here is another interesting problem regarding the IMS.
Here are some possible answers :)
a) All the services are independent of each other. Just because there
was a crash in the IMS, it doesn't mean your SMTP server should stop
processing mail or your directory server stop processing LDAP requests.
b) When a single user logs in, a new thread is created to handle that
connection. If some abnormal operation takes place, it most cases it
will cause the thread to be abnormally terminated (the user just loses
the connection to the server), or if it's more serious and the message
store server doesn't handle the error properly it will crash.
Unfortunately, when one of the threads crashes, it will crash the whole
server. And this is where you make a backup of the corrupted mailbox.dat
and submit it to the developers so they can take a look at it and fix
the problem. Are you sure it was a corrupted mailbox.dat or a just a
corrupted message that the user was trying to read?
c) I'll go back to point b - to make sure that if you had a corrupted
mailbox.dat or just a corrupted message? It is not recommended to
manually edit the mailbox.dat file. If it's corrupted, then the best
thing to do is make sure the user is logged out, delete the mailbox.dat
file and the message store server will create the mailbox.dat again when
the user logs in. To recover the old messages, just rename them from
*.msg to *.new and when the user logs in, the message store server will
treat them as new messages and allow the user to see them again. Make
sure not to rename the *.msg files that already exist in the mailbox.dat
file.
