Mailing List Help


You subscribe, unsubscribe, set various options, and otherwise communicate with the mailing list server by sending email containing commands.  These commands must be in the message body, not the subject.

All commands can be sent to the general list server address: autoshare@lists.pensive.org.  You can also send commands to an address specific for a list, which is the list name with -request appended.  When sending commands to a list-specific address, there is no need to include the list name in the command.  For example, to subscribe to the Qpopper mailing list, you could either send the command subscribe qpopper to autoshare@lists.pensive.org, or send the command subscribe to qpopper-request@lists.pensive.org.

Here are the commands you can send:

General Commands
Command Description
HELP Returns a list of available commands (the information you are reading now).
RELEASE Returns information about the list server software.

Subscription Commands
Command Parameters Description
SUBSCRIBE Mailing List (unless using -request address) Subscribes you to the specified list.
Optionally, your full name
UNSUBSCRIBE Mailing List (unless using -request address), or ALL Unsubscribes you from the specified list, or from all lists.
SIGNOFF
SET Mailing List (unless using -request address), or ALL Sets an option (see next table for option names and descriptions)
Option
QUERY Mailing List (unless using -request address), or ALL Shows the current state of your options.
WHICH   Shows to which lists you are subscribed.

Options (for use in SET command)
Option Description
ACK You receive copies of your own submissions.
NOACK You do not receive copies of your own submissions.
CONCEAL Your name will not be disclosed in a REVIEW command (not all lists permit REVIEW).
NOCONCEAL Your name will be disclosed in a REVIEW command (not all lists permit REVIEW).
DIGEST List submissions are batched and sent to you as a group in one email message.
NODIGEST List submissions are sent to you individually, as they are generated by their authors.
MAIL You receive list submissions.
NOMAIL You do not receive list submissions (but remain subscribed). This may be useful if you want to be able to post from multiple addresses -- set NOMAIL for all but one.

List Commands
Command Parameters Description
LIST   Returns information about the public lists maintained by this server (there are private lists as well, which are not shown).
REVIEW Mailing List (unless using -request address), or ALL Shows a list's unconcealed subscribers, if permitted by the list.
RECIPIENTS
WHO
INDEX Mailing List (unless using -request address), or ALL Returns an index of archive files.
