Thanks, Chuck!
One other thing is that the AutoShare
Admin:Preferences=>Miscellaneous=>Bounce setting should be "On".
BTW, "moderated" list type is still not working for me and I'm
extremely frustrated about that. I've done over 3 dozen tests so far
and no dice! Please let me know if you have any suggestions. The
problem: Message posts are properly sent back to original sender but
not being delivered to moderator (ListMaster).
Best regards,
Derek

Subject: setup for multiple domains
I don't get it setup and running:
the-list@domain1
and
the-list@domain2
the whole thing runs under SIMS
domain1 and domain2 are not the main domains at this server, lets say
main.domain
The router and the accounts had been set up properly:
the-list@domain1 = domain1_the-list
the-list@domain2 = domain2_the-list
now the first question starts:
what main accounts need to be made, is one -only one- account enough:
AutoShare@maindomain
or can I have several others like
AutoShare@domain1
Autoshare@domain2
and also what about subscribers address
subscribe-the=list@domain1 and ... dot @domain2
will that work
I don't my customers and especially not the subscribers of the list
have them see or know that they share the server at "maindomain" and
want to show them only the "domain1" or "domain2" names.
Hopefully someone has enough experience with this

Sorry, I don't have an answer to your problem. I'd like to ask

moderators? I can't even get my moderated list to redirect to *1*!...
AutoShare is supposed to redirect to "ListMaster" but no go for me.

Thanks for any insight.

In the "moderator" field, I wrote a list address (list@biol10) which is a
private list with the two moderators as members. It *used* to work, and now it
doesn't, which is wierd.

Thanks for your feedback, Casgrain. That's a good idea!
By "moderator" field, you mean the general and/or list specific
setting under AutoShare Admin:Configuration=>List that is labeled
"E-mail", correct? Just want to double-confirm.
Also (since I still have not gotten it to work), when a message is
sent to a moderated list is the message redirected *immediately* to
the "moderator" (ListMaster) - or are posts sent to moderators when
Logs or Digests are scheduled to be sent out?
Thanks,
Derek

I think so. I don't have AS in front of me so I can't verify this.

If you are using SIMS you can set up a distribution list in SIMS to
send to both moderators.

It goes out immediately, to whatever address is in the list-specific
E-mail field.

Thanks very much for your feed back Bill and Casgrain!
In EIMS, I guess could set up the moderator account as a "Mailing
list" or, if the 2 moderators have accounts on the server, use a
Group account. If I could only get the message to forward to the
moderator... :(

In the Admin go to preferences -> more folders and ensure that the
'save filed mail' and 'save incoming mail' folders are enabled. This
will tell you whether your error is in Autoshare or EIMS

Thanks for your feedback.
I've figured out that part of my problem is my misunderstanding of
how a moderated list works. I thought that for every post, 2 messages
are sent out - 1 to the original sender (with note, "This
contribution has been forwarded to the moderator") and 1 to the
moderator. Of course, all of you know that that is not how it works.
Only 1 message goes to the moderator and it is this message that
begins with "This contribution has been forwarded to the moderator".
Now that I am clear on that, I have another problem: Using Eudora, if
I redirect the message (and delete the "This contribution has been
forwarded to the moderator" note) using the list-specific ListMaster
address (the one labeled "E-mail") to the list address, the message
just goes back to the moderator's mailbox and is not posted to the
list. I made sure that the moderator (ListMaster address) was a
subscriber to the list (does it have to be?) but it still does not
work.
Don't know if this is relevant, but for AutoShare
Admin:Preferences=>More Miscellaneous I have checked "RFC From" and
"Subscriber aliases".
My Eudora account is set up like this:
Username = listmaster
Mail Server = bbdo.com.hk
SMTP Server = bbdo.com.hk
Return address = listmaster at bbdo.com dot hk
And again, this matches my moderator address setting (labeled
"E-mail" for my list-specific settings): listmaster at bbdo.com dot hk
Any idea what's wrong? Thanks for any suggestions!

Derek

I think for the mail to be posted to the list you need to mail from the
listmaster to the list, and not to the listmaster.

Thanks for your reply, Chuck.
Yes, that is exactly what I did - mailed from
<listmaster at bbdo.com dot hk> to my list. Well, I redirected using my
Listmaster personality in Eudora to my list. So if a post came from
<christy at bbdo.com dot hk> and I redirected, the message I sent out looks
like this:
To: <listname>@bbdo.com.hk
From: Christy Wong <christy at bbdo.com dot hk> (by way of Listmaster)
But it fails to work. I also examined my AutoShare preferences file
in ResEdit and the list-specific setting for that particular list
looks just fine (STR# 1001,2 matches "listmaster@bbdo.com dot hk").
Any other suggestions, Chuck or anyone else? This problem has got me
totally stumped!
Mikael, please help... are you still on this list?
Thanks again,
Derek

I'm in over my head here, but I think the redirect is the issue. Try
using "forward" instead. My client doesn't have redirect, but I think it
does not change the header that autoshare needs to see to know that the
message came from the listmaster.

Thanks again for your suggestion! It didn't help but doing so
revealed something even stranger.
The test list I have set up is <bap at bbdo.com dot hk>.
So I did "forwarding" instead of "redirect" and the headers of the
message I sent out were:
To: bap list <bap at bbdo.com dot hk>
From: Listmaster <listmaster at bbdo.com dot hk>
Guess what? I got this error returned to my <listmaster at bbdo.com dot hk>
mailbox!...

So now I've got 2 problems: All posts to this moderated list
<bap at bbdo.com.hk> get delivered ONLY to <listmaster at bbdo dot com dot hk> -
nothing is posted to the subscribers even after a Redirect or Forward
to the list <bap at bbdo.com.hk>. Secondly, the <listmaster at bbdo dot com dot hk>
can't even post to the list - even if it is a subscriber and
moderator (ListMaster)!! What the heck is going on here!
Oh, if a subscriber like <christy at bbdo.com dot hk> posts to the list
<bap at bbdo.com dot hk>, her message is properly delivered to the
<listmaster at bbdo.com dot hk> mailbox. Why a message from
<listmaster at bbdo.com dot hk> (also a subscriber) to the list
<bap at bbdo.com dot hk> is REJECTED is very puzzling, indeed.
Any more thoughts or suggestions are welcome and greatly appreciated,
of course. Thanks again, Chuck.
Best,
Derek

Not enough info to be sure of these thoughts, but here goes:
1) If you subscribe someone to a list they may not have rights to post
depending on how the list is set up. Check the preferences for the
account that gets rejected. Perhaps the rights are set incorrectly.
2) Once you have 1 figured out send a message to the list from the
listmaster and see if it goes as it should. If all is well then try
sending from another person (which should go to the listmaster) and then
do the reply. I'll bet this will work.

Chuck, you da man! I have not yet resolved the problem completely but
your thought #1 (below) helped a lot.
I did a remote "<password> SET listmaster at bbdo.com dot hk BAP post". Got
this confirmation: "Post has been turned on for your subscription."
I was then able to post to the list from <listmaster at bbdo.com dot hk>. Hurray!
Then I tried the full process: Subscriber to list. Post to
Listmaster. But when I "redirected" from <listmaster at bbdo.com dot hk>
back to the list, the message got sent back to the moderator's
mailbox <listmaster at bbdo.com dot hk>. I would like the posts to come
From: the original senders so that's why I want to have "Redirect"
working rather than "Forward".
I think this last part is not working because I have set AutoShare to
use "RFC From" (AutoShare Admin:Preferences=>More Miscellaneous).
With that setting, when I redirect, AutoShare is looking at whatever
address is in the "From" field (with a Redirect, that means the
original sender and NOT the Listmaster) so my "redirect" appears to
AutoShare to be just a post from a subscriber - not the Listmaster
who is the only one allowed to post to a moderated list. Yup, that
would explain it! So I think I need to uncheck the "RFC From" option
so that AutoShare uses "SMTP envelope sender" (instead of "RFC From")
to determine what address to match up. I will try this tomorrow when
I'm back in the office (I'm home now and it's late here in Hong
Kong!). We'll see...
Chuck, thanks very much for taking the time to help - I really
appreciate it. I owe you one!
Will do a follow-up message tomorrow and summarize my findings in
hopes that it might help others who run into this same problem.
Best,
Derek

Chuck Boody and Bill Bedford, thanks very much for your help.
With their help, here's a checklist I came up with to get a moderated
list working:
1. In AutoShare Admin, for Configuration=>Lists=><list>=>List Type,
"Moderated" should be selected (obviously)
2. In that window, make sure address under "E-mail" = Moderator =
only account that can actually post to list
3. In AutoShare Admin, for Preferences=>More Miscellaneous, "RFC From
(vs envelope)" option should NOT be ticked (unless you don't mind all
posts coming from Moderator)
4. Moderator (specified in #2) must be a subscriber to the list AND
have "post" privileges
(Note: To change default settings for new subscribers, in AutoShare
Admin, go to Configuration=>Lists, select a list, and click the "More
list" button.)
All posts from any subscriber, other than the Moderator, will get
delivered to the Moderator's mailbox. (Posts from the Moderator will
go directly to all list subscribers.) If you're the Moderator, you
will receive all posts with the following note added at the top of
the message body.
************************************************************
This contribution has been forwarded to the moderator
************************************************************
If you use Eudora and you approve of the post, *Redirect* the post
back to the list using the Moderator account but delete that note
(This contribution has been...) before you hit "Send". That's it!
Hope this helps others. Thanks again to Chuck and Bill!
Cheers,
Derek

Subject: Process File error: -48
Last month I spent a little time trying to set up a mailing list and
archives with AutoShare 4.2.3 and EIMS 2.2. I did not competely
succeed, but left it up and running so that I could play with it from
time to time.
Monday morning, December 3, the EIMS Mail Log was scrolling an
endless stream of the following error message:
Error for mailing list Hard Drive:AutoShare:Auto:List Server type -48
Process File error: -48
1) What do I need to do to get that error message to stop? For now,
I would be happy to disable AutoShare completely until I get time to
explore it some more, but quitting it doesn't seem to be enough.
2) What might that error message be indicating?
Thanks for any help.

The message means "File already open with write permission." In other
words, EIMS is trying to open a file that someone already has open.
You didn't open its log file with SimpleText and forget to quit, did you?

Thanks for the troubleshooting help, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
The message list has never been active except for a few test messages
from me. Why do you think there is activity now? A
turn-of-the-month archive function? How can I get it to stop trying
to write the file? AutoShare is not running.
Can you think of some change I can make with EIMS Admin to end this?
My tour through the menus shows me nothing.
Thanks.

OK, I was able to get it to stop in EIMS Admin by changing the
settings for the test accounts I had set up, from "Mail Action:
Mailing List" to "Mail Action: None". I'll have to go back sometime
to see why I was getting the error (and how to get the functionality
I want), but at least I've stopped the stream of error messages.

You probably have a zero-byte file in your mail folder. I've seen this
problem occur about once a year - usually after EIMS has crashed in the
middle of writing out a message file. You have to delete the file and then
restart EIMS. Switching your setting in your test situation probably
worked around the problem but wouldn't be useful in a production
environment use of the server.

Subject: receives; doesn't send
I have run EIMS 1.3.1 & Autoshare (now 4.2.2) "out of the box" first on a
Centris 650, then, last June, ported it to a Mac 6500. Everything was fine.
I had to move it to another 6500 in November--& can't get it going again. I
even deleted everything (having saved my lists to another computer) &
reinstalled & reconfigured--but clearly I don't have something right. When
I send to AutoReply to check, the message is received--supposedly
transferred--but not sent back to me again. Nothing gets sent on.
Of course, "it's" at school--and I'm home for the holidays--but any
suggestions would be welcome. (I consider myself very much a novice insofar
as Autoshare is concerned...)

Subject: Letting users unsubscribe
I use an html form (along with Email.cgi and MondoMail) to let users
subscribe to a list via a web page form. They put in their first and last
names (required fields that are important for our instructors), their email
address and list name, then they use a radio toggle for either subscribe or
unsubscribe and a Submit button to send it on its way.
Subscribing works great - but users get an error message when unsubscribing
from lists- It looks like Autoshare doesn't want to see user names when
unsubscribing and thinks that they're part of the list name, and the user
won't be unsubscribed.
I'd like to keep the same subscription page for both , and if they leave off
their names when unsubscribing an error message gets generated since they're
required fields. Is there a way to get Autoshare to accept but ignore names
when unsubscribing (or is this too bizarre a request?)?

Sounds like your HTML form has incorrect syntax. Here is a snippit from
one of my forms for unsubscribing:
<td>
<FORM action="mailto:AutoShare@theOmbudsman dot com" method=post>
<INPUT TYPE="hidden" NAME="list" VALUE="CAP-List">
<INPUT TYPE="hidden" NAME="command" VALUE="UNSUBSCRIBE">
<INPUT TYPE="submit" NAME="submit" VALUE="Unsubscribe">

</td>
</tr>
All the user has to do is click on the button, assuming their browser
settings are correct.

We have a Tip of the Day list that follows the digest setting of once a

problem for them). We had that set to send messages on Fridays.
Apparently the day for sending digests has become reset. So, how can I
set it back to Friday?? Do I only need to force the digest to occur on

I don't know of any osax that would do it. Just know however that I'm
using Stuffit Commands to get attachments out of mails, worked like a
charm so far. It's only part of MIME decoding but maybe it's enough

Hi Serge,
I'm intrigued as to how to accomplish extracting attachments using
your method above - would you mind elaborating. Does it require the
explicit use of Autoshare? Or does it extract the attachment before it
makes it to either Autoshare or the mail server app? Many thanks.
Bye for now, Terry Allen

Subject: Mysterious disappearing list commands
Running autoshare 4.2.2 on a LC630 - several lists are running just fine,
but autohsare will NOT accept any commands!
When I post something to the list, I see EIMS place a file inside the
"filed mail" folder, autoshare picks it up and processes (per the
autoshare windows) and then EIMS sends several mesages out.
HOWEVER - when I send a command direct to autoshare (say, help or list or
even subscribe!), EIMS places the file in the filed mail folder. The file
subsequently disappears (after a few seconds) but there is no indication
that autoshare has done anything with it in the autoshare status window,
and there is never any reply. I've also found that subscribe requests are
not being accepted (processed) either.
I've reinstalled autoshare, redone the prefs file, all to no avail.
What do I do next?

Subject: Thanks Mikael and autoreply bug
First off, Mikael Hansen deserves a big THANK-YOU for creating and
improving AutoShare over the years and expecting nothing in return.
Thanks, Mikael. I've been using AutoShare for the past 6 years or so
and all the while it has been a great service to our company.
If Mikael is listening, I'd just like to know if he plans on fixing
the vacation-mail/autoreply bug. The bug is that if a message to an
autoreply account contains styled (HTML) text, either a blank or
scrambled autoreply message is returned to the sender. If this is
fixed, it would be a HUGE help to us!
Thanks for any insight. Mikael, please don't leave us "hanging"!! :^)

Sorry, no solutions, but just some thoughts (questions, really)...
Anything in the AutoShare Log Reports? Were commands to AutoShare
ever working before? Your files in Auto:Documents:AutoShare all there
(Sub, Unsub, Help folder...)? Could you have disabled accepting of
commands for your lists?... What Type are your list set up as -
Subscription, Open, Private...? If your lists are set up as Private,
I don't think AutoShare will accept commands for them.
Hope this helps.

Subject: Bounce message token
Hello,
We have been using Autoshare for several years now and have been very
happy with it. There is, however, one issue that I have been unable
to figure out and hope the list could be helpful:
We have the Autobounce feature set up so that if an address is
invalid, Autoshare handles the sending of the bounce message. That
works great with one exception:
How can we tell the person the bad email address? E.g. if a person
sends a message
To: good_address at miph dot org, bad_address at miph dot org
From: jdoe@somewhere
Is there a way for the bounce message to say:
Your message to "bad_address@miph dot org" failed because the user
"bad_address@miph dot org" is not valid.
Currently we have a generic message that makes it nearly impossible
for the person to know which address was bad.
Thanks for any help the list can provide.

We have been running EIMS 1.3 and Autoshare 3.1 for a couple of years
now and been very happy. We just upgraded to EIMS 3.1 and now our
lists aren't distributing. Please forgive me for a) not staying
up-to-date on this if it was discussed before and b) not searching the
archives for past discussions.
Nothing else has changed on the hard drive and the settings for the
accounts in EIMS 3.1 seem to be correct. Any help in resolving this
situation would be greatly appreciated...even being pointed in the right
direction for on-line resources. If it is as simple as upgrading to
Autoshare 4 great....and sorry for the post. I'm hesitant to start
messing with things until I know what direction I should be heading.

Dave;
I think this is an issue with where the incoming mail folder is. With EIMS
1.3.x it was in the system folder. EIMS 3.x I think moved that folder to the
EIMS application folder. You would need to reset all folder paths in
Autoshare.
If this doesn't help, just ignore me. ;-)

Just fixed the same thing this morning after upgrading my kid's school
server late last night.
The Mail Folders have moved into the EIMS folder. Reset your Autoshare
preferences to point to the right Incoming Folder.

Subject: Deaf Autoshare (a continuing saga)
This is one of those issues that has gone on for a loooong time....partly
because I get to work on it about an hour a month.
The short recap: We're running Autoshare 4.2.2 & EIMS 1.3.1 on an
LC630/gobs of
Ram/MacOS 7.6.1
Several lists are running, and running fine. Moderator sends a mesage to
the list, message gets transferred to the appropriate folder, autohsare
processes, email gets sent out. I do have one tip of the day type list,
which doesn't work - more below.
HOWEVER - autoshare will not respond to ANY commands (sub, unsub, review,
help, nothing). I send a command, eims receives it, and autoshare places
the received file into the Mailback folder - where it sits. It does the
same thing with any "tip o' the day" emails sent out.
So a collection of files is stashed in the MailBack folder, but autoshare
never does anything with them after depositing them there.
2nd HOWEVER - autoshare DOES pick up the digest files for the
mds_announce" list and sends 'em out.
Things I've checked:
Autoshare account in EIMS is setup correctly
(autoshare at list.mds.macon.ga dot us, set to save as files in the filed mail
folder with no colon at the end of the directory name)
Mailback folder location is correct in autoshare admin (I set it again to
be sure - System Folder:Mail Folder:Incoming Mail)
None of the list settings have anything to do with mailback.
I've already rebooted, deleted autoshare config files and recreated, and
done the same with the Eudora config files.
What am I missing here? What else can I check?

I seem to remember this problem coming up before, and the reason was
that the autoshare documents did not exist for the commands being sent,
or did not have the correct token. I assume, also, that you have enabled
remote administration.

I don't know if the comments below will solve your problem, but maybe they
will help. I hope so.
Most of what I suggest will happen automatically or will be made much easier
if you use the Autoshare Administration program. If you are not using that
I would certainly recommend it. And when you use it turn on the balloons
from time to time. Mikael has built a huge number of useful comments into
the program.

I'm fuzzy about this, but are you sure that things should go to the
"mailback" folder? I think they should go to the incoming mail folder.
Mailback is only used for true mailback situations I think.

See above. I don't think they should go there.

At one point you had to specify the name of the account to match the name of
the listserver in autoshare. Is that set right?

I think they require a colon.

I don't think the mailback folder and the Incoming mail folder should be the
same. I think that may cause some sort of looping to occur.
