if you have shadow passwords installed (I think yes), try to add
a -DAUTH parameter to Makefile. In my system ( RH 6, shadow + MD5 ) it
looks like ( part of Makefile ) :

#########################################################################
# Generated automatically from Makefile.in by configure.
#
# * Copyright (c) 1998, 1999 Qualcomm Incorporated. All rights reserved.
# *
# * File        : popper/Makefile.in
# * Project     : Qpopper Server
# * Comments    :

CFLAGS		=	-g -O2 -fstrength-reduce -fpcc-struct-return
CDEFS		=
OS_DEFS		= 	 -DLINUX -DUNIX
DEFS		=	-DHAVE_CONFIG_H -DAUTH
pop_target	=
NETWORK_LIBS	=	 -lresolv
KERBEROS_LIBS	=
#########################################################################

Should work.

This comes from pop_exit() in popper.c, and appears to be a result of a
read() on the socket (in myfgets()) returning 0 or -1 (ie. client close
or socket error). It would be useful if the code logged strerror(errno)
if there was actually an error, to help in diagnosis. I expect this
would be done in pop_msg.c, in the "stat != POP_SUCCESS" path near the
end of the file.

Subject: Error Message: -ERR POP EOF received

Hello,

I hope somebody can help me, because the problem results in frequently
manual edits of user mailboxes. It seems that the reason, is the
transfer encoding 8bit for MIME-attachments.

While people are accessing their mailboxes, the qpopper 2.52 often
generates error messages like this:

popper[14711]: name at host dot dom -ERR POP EOF received.

The users can not access their mailboxes, if that error occures.

Thanks in advance for any help or tips.

Hello All,

The Setup :
Our company has got a registered domain(www.realdomain.com ) with e mail ids
for all employees. The server provides POP facility too. We d/l & distribute
all the mails to the respective mailboxes in our local mail server running
sendmail 8.8.7 & qpopper on RH5.2 Linux using fetchmail-sendmail-procmail
combination.
The Problem:
I want to force every one in the organization to send and receive mails only
through our local mail server . That is prevent anyone from connecting
directly to the realdomain.com pop server through their mail client ( like
MS Outlook). We have a leased line internet connection.
How do i go about it ? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Manoj

Best way would be to use a firewall, but TCP wrapper can also be used to
restrict access.
BTW Why dont you upgrade your sendmail as well? there are rpm's out there
which can make your life easier if you find it difficult to update by
compiling.

One way to force them to log into the local mail server is to set up an
access list on your router.
You can either block everyone in your network from connecting to the IP
address of the realdomain mail server or preferably just block the TCP POP
port on the router.

Let me know what type of router you have and I'll send you instructions

Then why the *=07 are you using it?

$ telnet dns.alfa.it 110
Trying 194.243.242.130...
Connected to dns.alfa.it.
Escape character is '^]'.
+OK QPOP (version 2.53) at dns.alfa.it starting.

If you made it so much better then share, if you are using the qualcomm

Unless you are using it because you like your ass sucked, then go see a

Do you have shadow passwords? If you do you will need to run configure
with --enable-specialauth (qpoper 2.53 anyway). Your best bet is to do a
./configure --help and look for shadow support.

Go ahead and find yourself some superior software.

While you are at it, find an email list that cares to hear your broad
complaints that offer no technical backing at all then send trash like
this to them instead.

Better yet-- write this superior software yourself while you still
know so much more than the rest of us.

Hello,
	Yes, you can use dbs other than gdbm and (ancient) dbm. However, your
DB must have backwards compatiblity with either of the to listed above. I.E.
Ndbm includes in it's header files, support for dbm.
	This, in my option, is a flaw is qpopper, that it will not support
other DBs natively, such as Berkeley DB2. However, I lack both the time and
experience to write the inclusions my self.

Howdy!

Has anyone been able to get Qualcomm's poppassd program to work on
Solaris 2.6? It worked fine on Solaris 2.5, but when I upgraded to Solaris 2.6
and recreated poppassd, it stopped working. After entering the new password
the first time, it ALWAYS errors out saying it was unable to change the user's
password.

The changes I made in the "poppassd.c" file to accommodate Solaris
reply strings in 2.6 and 2.7 are as follows:

=================================
static char *P1[] =
    {"Old password:",
     "Old password: ",
     "Enter login password: ",
     "Enter login(NIS) password: ",
     "Changing password for *.\nOld password:",
     "Changing password for * on *.\nOld password:",
     "Changing NIS password for * on *.\nOld password:",
     "Changing password for *\n*'s Old password:",
     "passwd: Changing password for a85011\nOld password: ",
     ""};

static char *P2[] =
    {"\nNew password:",
     "\nNew password: ",
     "\n*'s New password:",
     ""};

static char *P3[] =
    {"\nRe-enter new password:",
     "\nRe-enter new password: ",
     "\nRe-enter new  password:",
     "\nRetype new password:",
     "\nEnter the new password again:",
     "\n*Re-enter *'s new password:",
     "\nVerify:",
     ""};

static char *P4[] =
    {"\n",
     "NIS(YP) passwd/attributes changed on *\n",
     "NIS entry changed on *\n",
     "passwd (SYSTEM): passwd successfully changed for *",
     "passwd (SYSTEM): passwd successfully changed for *\n",
     ""};
=================================

This has been tested only for changing password files, not NIS or NIS+.

Hi...

I'm quite new to this whole stuff and have the following question. I have
compiled compiled qpopper2.53 without the apop authentication and I am not
able to atheticated to the server. I have created a user test with password
test. Even when telnet"ing" to port 110 locally and trying to log in I get
these lines in my syslog.

popper: Unable to get canonical name of client, err = 111
popper: test at [192.168.116 dot 240]: -ERR Password supplied for "test is
incorrect"

What am I doing wrong. How do I have to set up a user being able to fetch
mail? Is there anything I have to take care of when building qpop?

Btw. I have a linux box using RedHat 6.0 (2.2.5-15 Kernel).

Thanks for any hints...

Hello everyone...

I am fairly new to UNIX in general and have just installed RedHat linux 6.1.
I am having difficulty getting qpopper to install. I have extracted the
files into a directory I made called qpopper, and everything seemed fine to
that point. In the INSTALL directions, I am supposed to run ./configure and
make. When I run configure it tells me:

creating cache ./config.cache
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... no
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH

When I try and run make it says command not found. I have my inetd.conf and
services ports setup correctly, I believe.... but maybe not the location of
the qpopper file. When I try to telnet to the pop3 port, it says connection
closed by foreign host, which supposedly means my program cannot be located
or is failing on startup...

Has anyone encountered this, or can anyone help me...please!!!!

Sounds to me like you don't have a c compiler, which is what cc refers to
(or Gnu C Compiler -> gcc).
If you install a c compiler you probably won't get the error message again.
 Gnu C compiler can be downloaded from
http://www.gnu.org/software/gcc/gcc.html.
Hope this helps!

You probably did not install the compiler from the RPM's...Check your
installation using the Redhat package manager...it will tell you what you
have installed and what you can install (from the CD). It is very simple
and straight forward.

1) make sure your clients have canonical names. :)
2) if you have a lot of clients whose reverse IP isn't setup properly,
   or you don't care about whether it is or not, hack the offending
   error message out of qpopper.

Look in pop_init.c, around line 280 or so.

Forgive my ignorance, I don't know much about DNS. I have an NT
server(172.16.1.2) running DNS, qpopper is running on a FreeBSD
server(172.16.1.3) with no DNS. The FreeBSD server has the NT server as its
primary DNS server. Most of my clients are assigned an IP from the DHCP
running on the NT server (range is from 172.16.11.1 through 172.16.11.254.
Users that are not on DCHP have static IPs within the range 172.16.10.1
through 172.16.10.254. The NT server has in-addr.arpa records for
1.16.172.in-addr.arpa and I just tried adding 10.16.172.in-addr.arpa and
11.16.172.in-addr.arpa but it did not help.

Hi, I have some problem with the email.

1) Sometime, I could not log on to POP3 server via Eudora or Netscape, it
says my passwords doesn't right, but actaully, my passwd IS right, the
problem is that there is a username.lock file under /var/spool/locks
directory on mail server, everything will be OK if that file gets manually
deleted.

2) Another problems is that sometimes, I got concatenated mails, that means
I received one mail, but that mail includes several mails in there.

3) I usually left my mails on server, the 3rd problem is that Eudora light
3.05 could not retrieve any new emails, despite that there ARE several new
emails, everything will be OK if I delete the first new email which can not
be downloaded, and the rest of them can be downloaded afterwards.

I think it it the problem of POP3 server. Any suggestion will be
appreicated.

The easiest way is to read the following manpages:

	- inetd(8)
	- inetd.conf(8)
	- hosts_access(5)
	- tcpd(8)

It is not qpopper that does ident lookups, but inetd and/or tcpd.

I've put a source RPM package on my web site for Qpopper 3.0b20. The

I just built and installed a binary package from this package and

Note that if you've previously installed my package for 3.0b18, you
will need to erase it (rpm --erase qpopper) before installing this one,
as RPM will otherwise think you're trying to downlevel to an older
version. I'm using the 2.99 version number to represent the beta-ness
of this package, in keeping with RPM's assumptions and other packages'
practices.

Do you use procmail v3.10 as the delivery agent? If so, upgrade to
the current version.

If not, please answer the following questions, as I am trying to
determine if there is a bug in qpopper, and if so, to fix it. This
will really help us out.

(1) What type of spool file corruption you see (open the spool file
in an editor and see what looks to be the problem, for example, is
the first character "f" instead of "F"? If you want, you can
compress the spool file and send it in to me (not to the list).

(2) How often the corruption occurs

(8) ./configure options used

(9) Compile-time macros and settings used

(10) inetd.conf line used to run qpopper

(11) Version of sendmail used

(12) Name and version of local delivery agent (the "Mlocal" line from
your sendmail.cf file would be very helpful as well).

Thank you very much for your help.

Subject: ERR POP EOF received (possible solution)

I noticed in my log files that the above error occurred 1-3 times a day
for 2 users, and was always immediately preceded by a kernel message
that the source address was being rewritten from my external public
address to my internal private address. My clients are configured to
use the external address, in case the machine is taken off-site.

(I'll also note that on further inspection, I'm also seeing a "socket
error" in my own PMMail that coincides with the Qpopper POP EOF error.
I hadn't noticed it previously as I leave my client running and the
error was always getting silently logged before I got into the office.)

I chased the kernel message down into the 2.0.36 kernel source code
(/usr/src/linux/net/ipv4/ip_output.c, look for "shifting saddr from
%s") and found that the rewriting is occuring as a result of a non-zero
/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_dynaddr, which is normally used to allow dynamic
address rewriting for systems without a static IP address. I had used
the value 7 to get verbose rewriting with RST packets sent when the
external address changed. (See
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/networking/ip_dynaddr.txt.)

I recently changed my ISP from a dial-up to a DSL account, and now have
a static IP for my external interface, so I changed my startup scripts
to restore the ip_dynaddr value to zero. I'll report back if this
appears to cure the EOF errors.

Yes, I am compiling gcc-2.95.2. I followed these steps and when I ran the
configure step, here is what I got....

Config.guess failed to determine the host type. You need to specify one.

Then it shows me the usage of the configure....

>I have version 6.1 of Red Hat Linux and am running it on a Intel PII-350.
>The version of GCC is 2.95....

Hmm,

Those two should negotiate without difficulty. Are you compiling
gcc-2.95.2? Did you set up a separate obj directory?

Here's what I did on my RH 6.1 system:

1. tar zxfv gcc-2.95.2.tar.gz
2. mkdir gcc-obj && cd gcc-obj
3. ../gcc-2.95.2/configure --enable-shared --enable-cpp
4. make bootstrap
5. make install

If the above do not work for you, please send me you entire output
from configure.

Thanks, Igor

Subject: Configure QPOPPER

I still could not get gcc to compile, it said.... so I installed all of the
gcc stuff from my redhat cd. Now, instead of telling me this when I try to
configure qpopper,

creating cache ./config.cache
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... no
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH

It tells me this.....

creating cache ./config.cache
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... no
checking for gcc... yes
checking whether the C compiler (gcc) works... no
configure: error: installaition or configure problem: C compiler cannot
create executables.

This is very frustrating and I was wondering if anyone can help....

I just installed Qpopper 2.53 and it doesn't seems to support shadow
password. I am using Linux2.2.5-15. In /etc/passwd, the password field is
"x" and all password is in /etc/shadow.

Am I configuring something wrong or it's indeed true that Qpopper doesn't
support shadow password.

Thanks

Subject: qpopper and qmail

I know this is a combination question, but perhaps someone can help me.

I have set up qmail and qpopper on a server, I mistakenly set up qmail to
run the Maildir variable, which I have been told qpopper cannot do. Is
this true?
mail is being delivered into $HOME/Maildir/tmp but I can't read it at all
with my pop3 clients.

If it is, I cannot begin to remember everywhere I put stuff to get it
running like this, so I am going to kill the machine and reinstall Linux
(redhat 6.0) and install everything fresh. My question is.. does anyone
have a "how to set up qmail with qpopper" kind of tutorial?

ANY and ALL help greatly appreciated!

nope.

edit config.h, change the definition of POP_MAILDIR.

(perhaps this is another for the faq?)

(or perhaps this should be an option for configure?)

You need to run ./configure --enable-specialauth. Check the INSTALL
file for information about shadow passwords.

Try:

	make realclean
	./configure --enable-specialauth
	make

I finally got qpopper to compile.... when I try to telnet to port 110, it
tells me connection closed by foreign host. what is the correct line I
should have in my inetd.conf file? Now, I have :

pop-3 stream tcp nowait root /root/qpopper3.0b20/popper
popper -s

Thanks alot.....
