It seems Ok,
Have you add the pop-3 line in /etc/services file ?

I have:
 - /etc/inetd.conf
pop3 stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/lib/popper popper -sd

- /etc/services
pop3 110/tcp # Post Office Protocol

Hope it helps you,

You should put another entry in /etc/serveices file

pop-3 110/tcp

I do have the correct line in my services file..... When I enable logging
and look in my log, I see a line that says...

inetd[545]: execv /root/qpopper3.0b20/popper: Permission denied

Any ideas on what is causing this?

Make sure '/root/qpopper3.0b20/popper' is the executable. If you
built in the source archive, it is likely to be
'/root/qpopper3.0b20/popper/popper' (one extra 'popper').

I was finally successfull in telnetting into my pop-3 port!!!!!!! It takes
my login name ok, but the tells me that my "password supplied for "hink" is
incorrect. In the docs, it says I may be using a shadow password, and I may
need to use the -DAUTH definition. Does anyone know what this means? I am
running Qpopper 3.0 b20 on RedHat Linux 6.1. Thanks..

if you are running md5 passwords, make sure you use PAM not just
normal getpwend/getspwent functions. dunno if PAM comes in stock
qpopper yet, it probably should.

if you are not using md5 passwords, add --enable-specialauth to your
./configure options.

inetd.conf is fine. Your hosts.allow/hosts.deny files need tweaking.

Subject: qpopper/OS X

Guys,

I just posted this to the os x list, and then ran across this list.
Hopefully someone will be able to help a complete moron out:

I was originally looking for an easy to install email package so people
could use netscape or IE or whatever to check their mail.
Someone suggested communigate, and I tried that. I went through the
setup and all (very easy and very nice), and tried it. Worked like a
charm! But-(there's always a but...) I did not realize that the version
I downloaded only permits 5 email accounts. Guess I should have paid
more attention. My first question is, is there a version of communigate
that doesn't come with all the whizbang stuff that is free, or doesn't
cost an arm and a leg? No way could I ever afford the $500 price tag. If

not-
On to qpopper...I installed that package, hoping that it would fit the
bill. Joseph Delaney was kind enough to point me in the right direction
as far as installation. Joseph's last comment was:

There really is no configuration beyond that for popper. Just add
users, and they will be able to check their mail using POP.

The only problem is, I don't know where or how to add users. I feel like

a complete idiot...

I tried the telnet directions for qpopper and it does start. If I check
processes it's in there. After a minute or so it "times out" I guess,
and then it's not visible when I check the processes again. Is that the
way qpopper normally functions?
Also, I did not uninstall the communigate package before installing
qpopper, and now it seems that email doesn't work at all. Should only
one be running at a time? I kept communigate up because I wanted to keep

some kind of email going while I was trying to work this out. Which
leads me to-

Adding users. (I'm probably the Tim Taylor of OS X, I'll try anything) I

went to the only place I could find to add users, which was the network
manager. I started adding users there, and (have no idea if it's right)
adding them to the "mail" group. Some names were too long, and OS X
complained that I had to limit the user names to 8 characters, because
that's what the domain defaults are.
Is there any way to change those defaults? So that I could have someones

complete last name, or something like samantha.smith at mycompany dot com?

Anyway, I've rambled.
Apologies for the ridiculously long post-

Hello all,

I've used procmail as local mailer in sendmail and change the default
mailbox (/var/mail) to ~/Mailbox/mbox. But I couldn't find a way to
re-compile qpopper for new mailbox. I've tried to change parameters of
POP_MAIL, POP_DROP, POP_TMPDROP, and POP_XMIT in config.h, but it seemed
not working this way. Can anyone give me a hand on this ?

Here is my environment :
FreeBSD 2.2.6, Sendmail 8.9.1, procmail 3.13.1, qpopper 2.53.

Thank you very much :-) !

You add users to the Unix system. If you only want them to be able
to check mail (and not telnet in to the system or have any other
access) you give them pop only shell. See the INSTALL file that came
with the installation for details and instructions.

Yes. A popper process starts up for each connection. You can enter
     user username
and then
     pass passwd
to verify that you can log in and check mail. (If you use shadow
passwords you need to run configure with the --enable-specialauth
flag before running make).

You want to be sure that only one process is listening on any port.
Qpopper listens on the POP port, which is 110. If you want to test
things, you can configure qpopper to run on other ports instead or in
addition (just make the changes to /etc/services and /etc/inetd.conf).

The login name does not have to be the same as the email address.
For example, you could have a Unix user account called "luser" with
an email address of "j.random.luser". This mapping is handled by
your SMTP server, which is very often sendmail. Sendmail has an
alias file that is used for this sort of thing.

You could try using xinetd which allows you to prevent such a flooding.

Hi,

i have a problem, someone floods my qpopper server by sending hundreds of
connection within a few seconds to my pop server.

i read in the qualcomm FAQs that you can increase the max.connections of
qpopper in the inetd.conf, but it makes no sense to set a unbelivable large
timeout value...

How can i deny that a user creates hundreds of connections? Here a short
list of the logfile:

Nov 21 16:17:22 server popper[1457]: connect from 195.162.231.xxx

I think I would do a lookup on the IP and then call or email the owner of
the IP. I work for a nation wide ISP and we get this kind of stuff all the
time. All we have to do is look at the Auth. logged and see who was assigned
that dynamic IP for that time then we suspend the account until we can find
out what the persons intentions were.

use tcpwrappers.

they come with most any FBSD or Linux installation and you need to
compile them for most anything else.

use a line like:

pop-3 stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.pop3d

and a line like:

in.pop3d : 195.162.231. : deny

in both hosts.allow and hosts.deny

verify with:

tcpdmatch in.pop3d 195.162.231.1

They're still subject to looping shutdowns caused by this kind of attack.

Simply because inetd is calling tcpd.

If the machine is a Linux box, consider using ipfwadm to reroute that
particular IP's connects to port 25 off to /dev/null

Yes, but the overhead of starting just tcpd is much less then both
tcpd and popd. Also, he could use inetd which uses libwrap, such
as the one with FreeBSD.

s/25/110 but yes, this is a way.

But then just route that IP into oblivion, so it will not even be
able to establish a TCP connection, ie.

# route add 1.2.3.4 reject

You don't need to have firewalling compiled into the kernel for that.

The problem with doing it this way is that you can be quite effectively
SYN flooded - and it's self-inflicted.

Incoming connects aren't blocked from connecting to the server and SYN
cookies don't always work that well at preventing all available FDs
being tied up.

It's far better to use firewalls or firewalling rules to prevent the
rogue IP from touching the pop3 port in the first place.

I have seen this occur when a customer runs some type
of (crappy) NT-based proxy software.

The best solution is to filter out the connection with
packet filters, based on the source IP address.

If this behaviour is crippling you, call their ISP
and tell them you have an "denial of service attack
in progress". You can get a hold of NOC phone numbers
at large ISPs for denial of service emergencies (seriously,
ONLY for emergencies) by going to:

    http://puck.nether.net/netops/nocs.cgi

Even though this is most likely caused by a screwed up
NT machine, it is still a denial of service because it
is abnormal behaviour that results in DoS.

If you do not have the capability of blocking the source
IP from accessing your POP3 server, you can also call
your immediate upstream provider and ask them to put a
packet filter in place on your line. (Assuming you have
a leased line.) If you're on ISDN or dialup, you may have
some difficulty getting your upstream provider to put in
a filter.

Ideally, a POP3 server probably shouldn't be run out of
inetd- instead it can be run as a standalone server.
The C code isn't too difficult, and you avoid a ton of
overhead.

I've said this in the past too. One thing which becomes pretty obvious
monitoring small machines is that qpopper startup is a fairly big load.

Will, how about posting a patch to qpopper to do this if you've already
done it?

If not, has anyone else considered it? Perhaps the persistent mode from
pidentd can be used as a starting basis - pidentd can be run standalone,
inetd-persistent or inetd-individually.

I am running Linux-Mandrake, qpopper for the pop3, and Sendmail pro
(sendmail.com) for smtp. (I'm migrating away from NT)

I have everything up and running, I can telnet into ports 110 and 25 with no
problems, get the proper responses, and can send mail FROM the server with
no problems.

The problem is:
When I try to send mail TO an account on the server, nothing happens and no
mail box is created and eventually the mail is retuned saying that the user
is unknown. Sometimes I don't get a returned mail at all.

I have set up an e-mail client on another computer (outlook express) and it
will log in and check the mailbox (wherever it is) and say there is no mail
without errors.

Question:
How do you make either qpopper or sendmail create a mailbox for an existing
user on the machine and then store the mail in that box ?

Thanks in advance,
Ken

I would think the reason for this problem would be caused by you not having
a user name and password set for the persons box. I am kind of new at this,
and this would be my first guess, also when I set my system I made a POP
user group.

It looks the sendmail configuration has problems, and nothing to do with
POP3, POP3's function is only to download mails in mailbox to user's local
computer. You might want to go to newsgroup comp.mail.sendmail to ask this
question.

I am having a similar problem. The mail that is being sent to some of the
mailboxes on my server is not received at all. I'm using qpopper for POP3
and sendmail for SMTP
Any light on this will be very helpful.

Greetings all,

I am wondering about the canonical problem. Currently my red hat 6.0
message log is chock full of the same message, "unable to get canonical

with the reverse look up of dns names. However this error occuring every

Any help as to how to fix the lookp problem or to stop the messages?

If you use qpopper3.0b20 you can elect to disable the check.

You can also find out why the reverse lookup fails and fix the
problem. For example, make sure your IP addresses have PTR records and
that the DNS server is accessible to the POP server.

I had a quite similar problem. The things you need to check are (at least):

- The home directory must exists and need to have the proper permissions
- The directory for the mailboxes (usually /var/spool/mail) needs to be
writeable by the user who owns the mailbox

Hi All,

Does anyone know if Qpopper provides support for virtual
domais with a shared IP address?

Some mail packages can be configured this way, in which
case users of each virtual domain are identified by loggin
in as user@domain or user%domain.

I read the FAQ and product notes but failed to find this
information.

I don't think it does, however I would love to findout otherwise.. Look into
GNU_POP3d it does. I keep hoping the people at qualcomm will write a patch,
they have been so good with everything else. I love Qpopper and it works
well with there Eudora products. I work for a nation wide ISP and I tell a
lot of people to look into Eudora..

Subject: Qpopper 2.53 and server mode and POP_DROP not empty !

From: Gildas PERROT <perrot at FranceNet dot fr>

Hi,

I compiled qpopper 2.53 in server mode (--enable-servermode) and with a
separate POP_DROP file.
I believed that in that mode, the mailspool is not copied to the temporary
spool area.
However, I can see that sometimes, .pop files are not empty.

Any idea why ?

Thanks in avance for your help. Gildas.

A patch and information for adding virtual domain support to gnu-pop3d is
available at http://www.reedmedia.net/projects/virtualmail/
(gnu-pop3d does not have virtual domains support.)

I use qpopper on some machines and gnu-pop3d with the virtual domains
patch on other systems. Both seem to work great. My gnu-pop3d is not yet
used by enough users for me to make any honest or valid comparison. (I
chose gnu-pop3d to patch, because the code was easier to follow than the
other pop3 daemons I looked at.)

Qpopper on one system seems to be working good with about 5000 users and
averaging over 180,000 pop3 connections per week.

What's the bug? It's kind of late,and I'm tired, so I probably

Subject: popauth - unable to open authorization database
From: hypnose at t-online dot de (guenter wessling)

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

My system: Linux, 2.0.36, DLD-Distribution, on I368.

Two questions on behalf of qpopper 2.5.3:

1. my distribution fo Linux uses /var/spool/mail with a symbolic link to
/usr/spool/mail. So, unmodified, popper installs with /usr/spool/mail.
I changed config.h to /var/spool/mail - is that ok ?
Do I encounter any performance problem or bug -
i.e. should I better leave this as /usr/spool/mail with symbolic link ?

2. Popauth installs properly,
reacts to "popauth -init" properly,
reacts to "popauth -user somebody" by asking for new pass and retype new pass,
yet then comes up with "unable to open authorization database".
I found this problem was fixed with ver 3.0
Quote ("changes"):
"Changes from 3.0b12 to 3.0b13
-----------------------------
1. Fixed "unable to open authentication database" errors when
   running popauth on some platforms."
Does anyone know who this was done ?
I tried ndbm, gdbm,
user pop is installed properly,
access rights are set exactly as in file "install".
I even tried with /usr/spool/mail and /var/spool/mail - installations (see
above).

Thank you,
best wishes from Germany

call me old fashioned, but i always thought that uidl commands should
return the same uidl for the same message regardless of how it's called :)

F^?!!d!Od9hl%d9Jcd!!
vs
F^?!!d!Od9hl1345785769Jcd!!

if the uidl has a printf % command in it, your uidl's won't match.

perhaps that's why some programs (especially mdaemon) won't delete some
messages "for no apparent reason". hmmm.

This was a bug in the source code that failed to take into account
certain platform-specific differences. It is, as you say, fixed in
qpopper 3.0 which you can run instead of 2.53 -- it is very stable.

So you're talking about two issues: (1) different UIDs are given for
'uid' vs 'uidl 1', and (2) sometimes the UID has a percent character
in it, which can cause problems for some programs.

For the first, do you have NO_STATUS defined? This causes qpopper to
not store the UID in the spoolfile and thus to regenerate it each
time.

yup.

a % is valid in a uid according to rfc1939 :

The unique-id of a message is an arbitrary server-determined
string, consisting of one to 70 characters in the range 0x21
to 0x7E, which uniquely identifies a message within a
maildrop and which persists across sessions. This
persistence is required even if a session ends without
entering the UPDATE state. The server should never reuse an
unique-id in a given maildrop, for as long as the entity
           using the unique-id exists.

if a program breaks because of a %, it's not rfc compliant and needs to be
fixed.

>For the first, do you have NO_STATUS defined?

nope, but i see where you're going.
i'm only seeing different uid's for messages where the uid has a % in it.

>This causes qpopper to not store the UID in the spoolfile and thus to
>regenerate it each time.

while i can understand why someone might want the status field not to be
updated, i don't know why you'd not want the uid updated. the way i see
it, that would break rfc and defeat the whole point of using uid's.

is there a qpopper developer's list?

I thought you were complaining about '%' being in a UID. Now I see
what you are saying is that when it appears, the output from 'uidl'
and 'uidl x' will differ, which appears to be a bug in qpopper.

The intent isn't so much to not store UIDs as it is to not update the
spool file.

There is <qpopper at qualcomm dot com>, which is the address for bug
reports, suggestions, patches, comments, and so forth.

The problem is that popauth 2.53 opens the file twice, once using the
gdbm API and once using a naked open. The gdbm_open locks the file, so
the naked open fails with a locking violation. The handle returned from
the raw open is never used, so you can safely delete the raw open and
its matching close.

Rather than fight the bugs in 2.53, I downloaded 3.0b20 and am running
that right now for evaluation.
