Hi,
I noticed that my log-in time for both sending and receiving mail seems to
be a little excessive. I can ping my mail host fine and it responds to a
pings quite well, so my network connectivity is not the issue. What are
some of the things I can look at to trim down the login time?

Going slightly off topic and ranting a bit...
I looked at postfix and qmail and they have the same problem that sendmail
(and qpopper actually) have and that is I'd have to patch them to get them
working, which means getting into the insides and risking breaking
something else. This is the age of the shared library and I'm firmly of the
opinion that every app should base this sort of thing (ie. authentication,
mailbox locating and any other procedures that might vary per site and
can't be reasonably handled by a config file) on shared libraries.
I should be able to compile my MTA with no inbuilt support for any
particular auth method or database support, in the knowledge that I can
compile a .so file, implementing one or more functions (which have a
standard interface) that will handle my way of doing things.
A good example of this is perdition,
http://www.us.vergenet.net/linux/perdition/ this is a POP and IMAP proxy.
When a request comes in to the perdition server, it figures out which POP
server the user's account lives on and then acts as a tunnel between the
user and the server, useful for distributing mail across multiple servers.
The server doesn't have any inbuilt methods of figuring out where someone's
account is, the config file has a section like this
# map_library /usr/lib/perditiondb_gdbm.so
map_library /usr/lib/libperditiondb_posix_regex.so
# map_library /usr/lib/perditiondb_mysql.so
and when a request comes in, it calls the dbserver_get function in your
chosen library.
The great thing is that if you write your own library, you don't have to
keep your patches up to date as new versions of perdition are released, you
don't even have to recompile your code. PAM also works like this, will drop
in authentication modules, selected in a config file. It's the way things
should be but in the vast majority of cases, it's not the way things are :-(
What do the qpopper maintainers think of this?
My patch is based on replacing calls to getpwnam by calls to fake_getpwnam
which goes and gets the info from mysql but pretends it came from the
passwd file. What are the chances of including a new authentication option
called "shared", which if selected loads a .so file and passes all
/etc/passwd querying to a routine in there? It'd save lots of people
keeping their patches up to date and you could gradually migrate all the
auth code into .so files, leaving all the shared code (eg logging a failed
login) in one place instead of many places.

complaining about messages dissappearing.
I thought it was our webmail interface but then noticed this error:

We've been running Qpopper 2.53 for quite a while with
--enable-hash-spool=2 but a single directory for temp-drop-dir. We of
course had to hack genpath.c to make this possible. We recently got a new
server and I'd like to install 3.0.2 as this will take over all mail
duties. However, when I enable hash=2, there isn't a genpath.c to hack
anymore. I'd prefer to keep the single drop directory as it's much easier
to admin. Any ideas on what I need to hack now to get the single drop dir
working correctly?
And as an aside, I'm sure this has come up before, but I don't keep a
constant eye on the list traffic. Is there an archive of this list
somewhere?

Fair enough for the MTAs, but qpopper doesn't support it, so once again
it's the "I wonder has my LDAP patch broken with this release?" syndrome,
which is exactly what I was talking about. Putting this sort of thing into
loadable modules means people with unsupported configs, can keep up to date
just by recompiling qpopper, no patches needed. And also, no need to
maintain patches. It's not that uncommon to find a patch that does what you
want, but is for an older version. With modules, "patches" only break when
the interface changes, which should be rarely.

Which version of Qpopper?
How big is your spool?
Do you use server mode?
Do you use bulldb?
Have you tried --enable-timing in 3.1?

The idea should be extendible (Early morning, no coffee :), ProFTPD do have
some SQL hooks I'm told, since home_dir is included, I don't see any
difficulties (in theory :) as why some FTP daemon shouldn't be able to hook
up as well.
So to answer your question, yes this should negate /etc/passwd or
equivalent.
I'd prefer to have it all in PAM (Correct me if I've misunderstood what you
use PAM for :), since then all that was needed was a PAM module and PAM
Enabled daemons, and the rest should sort itself out.

Hi,
We were using cucipop before and just switched to qpopper. We have
noticed that we are getting a large number of
-ERR [AUTH] Password supplied for "user@doamin dot com" is incorrect.
We didn't get these with Cucipop.
Looks like cucipop was striping out the "@domain.com" part and was only
using the username.
Is there anyway to make qpopper do the same?
I know the mistake lies with some of the user's configuration but it would
still be nice if we can authenticate them. It would definitely reduce the
number of calls our help desk is getting.

Have you checked your PATH value and verified that /usr/ccs/bin is part of
your path?? ar is located in this directory but is not part of the default
Sun root path.

genpath.c has moved to /common.
However, I'm curious: doesn't the use of a non-hashed temp dir pretty
much negate the gains from using a hashed spool dir?

These all mean the same thing: the TCP connection with the client
broke. Often the client closes it without sending 'quit'; sometimes
the dial-up line gets errors and disconnects; sometimes something
else happens.

First thing is to make sure you are running the latest version. At a
minimum use 3.0.2, I recommend 3.1 betas, since they've fixed more
edge cases.
Next, when you get an error like that, check if there is a second
popper process active for the user. If so, it is cleaning up and you
need to give it a chance. How long depends on how big the spool is,
if server mode is being used, and overall system load.
If there is not another popper process running, then there's a
problem. But first upgrade to the latest version, since it has
likely been fixed already.

I realize that, and you obviously didn't read the disclaimer at the bottom
of the quote. He said that he took the initiative in creating the
internet. I don't care how you read into it, that is what he said. The
transcript is available at the URL listed above.
I remember it back then and I remember the AUP's of the NSFNet and Merit
Networks. He may have helped the commercialization of the Internet, but
it wasn't his bill that went through congress allowing it.

new feature, but the question is which method to implement it? My
inclination would be to just add support for looking up the entered
username in sendmail's virtusertable. If found, we'd use that. If
not, we'd strip off the domain and use the local part. This would be
fairly easy to do (pretty much just open the db and do a lookup) but
it requires the virtusertable.

actually having the user login as
user@domain
can be one way to do virtual domains. Although I am not too sure
how many POP3 clients actually do this. eudora seems to be obsessed
with "username@popmail.domain dot com" ^^;
given the username in that form, it is trivial to do a lookup in
any table to get a matching "local id // password" combination.
which need not give anything real. Paving the way for a completely
luserless POP box using almost off the shelf s/w.

We _can_ start out with sendmail support and take it from there. I'd go
with this as 90% or more of qpopper installations are on sendmail boxes.
If the virtualuser stuff is done as plugins, then it should be simple to

Apparently not.
We are running Qpopper 3.0 in server mode and hash spool mode 2, splitting
the mailspool over four partitions located on an RSM-2000 (A3500) Sun Disk
Array (RAID5) while the temp dir is found on an internal dedicated SCSI disk.
Iostat and sar figures do not hint at a particular I/O bottleneck.
The system (E4500, 6 proc@250MHZ, 3 GB RAM) handles in excess of 220,000
POP3 queries *per day* for about 20,000 users. One finds between two and
three dozen Web browsers simultaneously active as well. (There is some
IMAP4 activity but that only accounts for minimal use of system resources.)
We're pretty pleased with its performance.

they've been downloaded. This seems to work fine. But I
also want to set the EXPIRE option to 0, to inform the clients
that this policy is in effect. So i tried running qpopper
with the -eexpire=0 option. But when i do this, clients get
the error message:
EXPIRE must be NEVER (-1) when AUTO_DELETE defined.
To me, this doesn't make sense. Am i correct in thinking
that having EXPIRE set to -1 means the server is saying it
doesn't ever delete the messages, and that having it be 0
would make the most sense when auto-delete is enabled? Or
am i looking at this backwards?

We are using exim for our MTA and would like to implement pop before send
so we could let people with legimitate accounts on our mail server send
from anywhere they happen to be without opening up to relaying for
spammers. For exim this seems to be a hack at your own risk proposition so
hack away I am trying. Has anybody hacked qpopper to log just the IP
address to a file so exim can do a lsearch on it? It seems pretty straight
forward and after working for 20 minutes on it I am almost done with it. I
just wanted to check with you guys to make sure I am not missing anything

It seems to me that one thing to do is to raise the limit and make sure
that you delete old bulletins that new users wouldn't be interested in.
(which you seem to do anyways).
If you normally only keep the 5 bulletins in the bull directory
anyways, there's no reason to hard-code an administrative preference
into the program. all it does is make life hard on you when things
demand a different approach.
Another thing to do would be to do like Jason says and simply mail the
welcome message(s) to the new users. You could then save the bulletins
for more immediate issues. This might allow you to set a lower max-
bulletin count and simply leave old bulletins around (for posterity).
(Either that, or set the max count high and only have 'active'
bulletins in the directory).

Subject: logging of pop sessions in syslog (qpopper 2.52)
We have qpopper 2.52 running on both aix and digital unix
On both machines, there's the line
mail.debug /var/spool/mqueue/syslog
However, only the logging of pop connections appear in
that of digital unix but not on aix
I should presume the syslog were enabled by default during
the 'make ' process of qpopper 2.52
Why didn't it get logged in aix ?
If i am to recomplie it again on aix, which option should
i enable explicitly so as to ensure the logging to syslog
will be achieved.

Look at --with-log-facility=name in the INSTALL file. The default for
AIX may be local1, and you may wish to override that. Meanwhile, you
could add a local1 entry to syslog.conf.

You need to upgrade to 3.0.2 first (or wait for 3.1, which should be
released very soon). You really shouldn't use 2.x, since there are
security and stability issues which are fixed in 3.x.

I seem to recall a thread or maybe just a message about
being able to prevent users from popping mail off a mail server
too often. But can's seem to find it in my archive.
Now with so many dedicated connections, cable and DSL I have
users that just leave their mail client running checking for
new mail every min 24hours/day. (Creating unnecessary load
on our mail server)
Is there a way to control how often a user can read their mail.
(Running qpopper 3.1b11)

firewall in order to block the users for x mins once they popped... Or...

do your users use an analogue modem (or similar) with built-in data
compression, e.g. V.42bis?
If so, the above is perfectly normal and should be expected.

You could try 3.1 and see if is any better. I think there were some
fixes that might help. It could also be extra network congestion,
system load, etc.

One could use a database similar to the one used for determining the
last POP bulletin read.
Be warned : I have seen Qpopper log extracts demonstrating that some
clients perform two POP3 accesses in rapid succession. That behaviour
may be beyond end user control.
