I'd suggest starting Qpopper with strace() or truss(), then check it
when it hangs and see what happened.

You could also enable debug tracing in Qpopper, but it sounds like a
system problem, not a Qpopper problem (since it happens to inetd).

I agree. The not allow to send mail option is very appealing.
That's probably the only directly effective measure that won't have side
effects like 'my very important message of one month ago has been deleted
and now I've lost thousands of dollars because you guys decided to delete
my mail !'

The FAQ at <http://www.eudora.com/qpopper/faq.html#permissions>
explains how to correctly set the permissions.

I'm unclear if you are talking about the group membership of the user
ID or the group ownership of the spool file. The group membership of
the user ID should not affect Qpopper, because Qpopper, when it
assumes the user's identify and sets it UID to that of the user, sets
its group ID to the group owner of the spool directory, which should
be 'mail'. My guess is that group 12 is does not have proper access
to the spools on your system. Is this 'mail'?

yeah, right, then you'll have the same thing as described below, just change
it to "an important customer sent me a 1Mb attachment with the super-duper
agreement and it bounced, so we've lost $1 bln "...

It works just fine for me.

Why ask this in the Qpopper mailing list, rather than the BIND mailing
list?

OB qpopper: it compiled fine too.

The inetd problem might be the usual problem with 'inetd' when it
starts to get too many connects - it disables that port for a while.
This can be adjusted, but the means of adjusting it differs depending
on the system. Under Solaris, this is done with the "-r" flag:
	-r 10000
Under Linux, this is done per service by appending the number to the
"nowait" field:
	nowait.10000

But if you get the same problem when running as a daemon, this is not
that problem.

I have a strange problem. Qpopper suddently stopped
accepting a particular user's login. I have reset the password
and even deleted and recreated the account information
(but not the home directory) and qpopper will not work for this
one account. I have many other poeople with working pop accounts
and there seems to be nothing particular about this one. Telnet and ftp work
fine for the account, and I can access the mail okay with the standard
"mail" program.

I am using Redhat 6.1 and qpopper 3.1b6

Here is what I get from fetchmail (although the problem
first occured when the person was using outlook)

fetchmail: 5.1.0 querying xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (protocol POP3) at Thu, 21 Dec 2000 07:29:23 -0500 (EST)
fetchmail: POP3< +OK ready <1127.977403592 at xxx.xxx.xxx dot xxx>
fetchmail: POP3> USER john
fetchmail: POP3< +OK Password required for john.
fetchmail: POP3> PASS *
fetchmail: POP3< -ERR [SYS/PERM] Unable to process From lines (envelopes), change recognition modes or check for corrupted mail drop.
fetchmail: [SYS/PERM] Unable to process From lines (envelopes), change recognition modes or check for corrupted mail drop.
fetchmail: Authorization failure on john at xxx.xxx.xxx dot xxx
fetchmail: POP3> QUIT
fetchmail: POP3< +OK Pop server at xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx signing off.
fetchmail: authorization error while fetching from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
fetchmail: Query status=3
fetchmail: normal termination, status 3

Any suggestions?

Check for the file .<username>.pop in the mailspool directory. This
error indicatates, that there is something in a line which should be a
mbox separator line, that is a line beginning with the string "From "
and so on. Either delete .<username>.pop (only if the original
<username> spool file is fine) or edit the file using your favorite
text editor.

Why not totally recreate the user _including_ his home directory and
mailbox and my guess is that it will then work (like everyone else).

I have never seen files with the names like
 .<username>.pop in the mailspool directory.

The standard mail file /var/spool/mail/<username> was readable
by the mail program. I also tried renaming the file to
/var/spool/mail/<username>.old and then sending new mail,
but this did not work either. Finally, after reading your responses,
I was convinced that it is a mail file problem. Then I tried
renaming the file again, but this time to
/var/spool/mail/old.<username>
When I tried fetchmail again, a couple of weeks worth of old email
suddently showed up in the mail spool file. I don't have a clue
about why this worked, but everything is back to normal. I will just have to
extract the missing email from the old.<username> file that I created.

Cheers,
Karl

Have you tried telnet to your pop server (telnet localhost 110), then USER
john, PASS *****
If you have a password problem qpopper will tell you then.

However, this bit:
fetchmail: POP3< -ERR [SYS/PERM] Unable to process From lines (envelopes),
change recognition modes or check for corrupted mail drop.
fetchmail: [SYS/PERM] Unable to process From lines (envelopes), change
recognition modes or check for corrupted mail drop.
tells me that the answer is a corrupted mailbox - probably an excess of
lines beginning with "From:" and qpopper doesn't know which is the correct
one. Have you tried deleting/moving the mailbox and sending a fresh message
to see if that can be collected?

I have a strange problem. Qpopper suddently stopped
accepting a particular user's login. I have reset the password
and even deleted and recreated the account information
(but not the home directory) and qpopper will not work for this
one account. I have many other poeople with working pop accounts
and there seems to be nothing particular about this one. Telnet and ftp
work
fine for the account, and I can access the mail okay with the standard
"mail" program.

I am using Redhat 6.1 and qpopper 3.1b6

Here is what I get from fetchmail (although the problem
first occured when the person was using outlook)

fetchmail: 5.1.0 querying xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (protocol POP3) at Thu, 21 Dec

Subject: Quick remedy for locked mailboxes?
Date: Thu, 21 Dec 2000 09:04:36 -0500

A response to the last thread "need help" reminded me of a question I've
been meaning to ask...

Is there a quick remedy to fixing a users mailbox when their connection is
terminated abnormally resulting in a lingering .username.pop lockfile?

Right now I just tell them to wait a short while, and the mailbox will
unlock itself. However, I'm waiting for the user that says "I need my mail
immediately!".

I've tried copying the .pop file back to the normal mail spool file and
deleting the lockfile, but that produced some strange results.

More specifically, I needed to check email from a remote location over a
dialup to find that someone sent an unwanted 5mb attachment. I terminated
the remote connection, copied the .pop lockfile back to the spool file,
deleted the lockfile, used an mua server-side to delete the email w/
attachment, then used my remote mua to check mail again just to find it was
downloading the same email w/ attachment that I thought I had removed.

Checking the mail spool directory again, I saw that the .pop lockfile was
recreated with the original filesize of the mail spool before removing the
attachment, even though the current spool file was considerably smaller in
size.

Did I miss a step, did I go about this the wrong way, or should I have never
even tried this in the first place?

Running Qpopper 3.1.2 via inetd on a RHL 6.1 box.

Thanks,

It seems that your pop3 daemon is set to create a copy of the mail spool,
work on that, and then merge it back with the original mail spool when it
is done.

To fix your problem, just remove the lock file, don't copy it back over
the original spool.

Creates a copy (.pop); empties original in the process (0 bytes); performs
necessary work on the .pop version; then copies resulting data back to
original spool file and deletes the lockfile.

As mentioned above, the POP process clears the original mail spool.
Therefore deleting the .pop copy will result in deleting all that user's
email, no?

In my experiance, it didn't zero out the original spool file.

I have since disabled this "feature" because of the overhead anyway.

As soon as Qpopper is notified that the connection is broken it will
clean up and terminate. If Qpopper doesn't get an EOF error on read
or a SIGPIPE signal, it will timeout and then cleanup and terminate.
You can always adjust the timeout value if you want.

Was the popper process still active for the user? If so, you you
could create quite a mess. And if mail was also being delivered for
the user, it would be even worse.

I've found that you not only have to kill off the linkering process that
is running (ps -auxww | grep pop then search for the PID, and kill -9
that process), then what I do is just do a "cat .username.pop > username"
in the /var/spool/mail directory... Then I just rm the .username.pop
file. Hope that helps....

it's reality, that's all. Don't programs like Netscape Messenger actually
put your mail to a Trash folder first before permanently deleting it?
If you then STILL delete it, you're too stupid to live ;)
People are more relaxed these days about the word 'delete' because of the
introduction of the Recycle bin. They figure, now they can be stupid more
often and not have to worry too much. Efficiency tends to bring about
laziness.
We could probably say the same thing about the spread of viruses..It's
directly porportional to the # of stupid people out there. And I dont see
that # decreasing anytime soon.
Just my opinion.

ick, you should never -9 a process unless it's absolutely necessary.
why not -HUP or -PIPE the process and let qpopper handle moving the
tempdrop back to the spool??

Subject: QPopper 3.0.2 Install Problem

I am having a seriously hard time getting Qpopper to work on our Linux mail
server. Sendmail has been installed on this box and has been running
perfectly for 9 months. I installed Qpopper and have not been able to get it
to run. I followed all of your FAQ's and even consulted our Linux
consultants and no one can figure out what the problem is.

Can you somehow offer me some assitance? The problem - whenever someone logs
in(using Outlook Express) they get a 'Your password was rejected' I have
checked and rechecked the password. I am using standard Linux
authentication, but tried the specialauth flag and still doesn't work.

I enabled tracing and got the follwing output...

I changed certain text in the trace to protect the innocent. I checked my
\etc\passwd file and verified that JohnSmith existed. Does Qpopper use a
different passwd file?

Please Help!!!

the userid is in lowercase...and I am not using shadow passwords - I did try
the --enable-specialauth just for fun and it didn't work...

The userid is coming in mixed case which will not match a lowercase entry
in the PASSWD file.

"Standard Linux authentication" is much more complex these days. I
have noticed that some distributions are, by default, using MD5
encrypted passwords rather than 'crypt'-encrypted. The choice is
greatly extended by the use of PAM.

Do you know what you are using?

I'm on an internal machine right now testing it out, the ip is

Try telnet'ing to port 110 of either interface and see if you get
qpopper's banner.

Since you're running ipchains, do you have port 110 open?

-ta printout was because I had ipop3d running through inetd.conf.

I want popper to run in server mode. So it should be an always running
process, right? Like httpd. When I do popper -s nothing seems to happen.

I also commented the ipop3d from inetd.conf and now pop3 isn't open, so
it wasn't popper that was working before. So, how do I even get popper
started?

Is it running standalone or via inetd (or something else)?

Did you start it?

I don't use it in server mode so I'll have to leave this question to
those that do.

Do you see anything in your log files? I use "ls -lt /var/log | head"
to see which logs were written last, and therefore are mostly likely to
have information from the program I just started.

Be sure to follow the steps in the INSTALL file. You also have to
make sure inetd knows about it, or that it gets started if it's in
standalone mode. The "troubleshooting" section of the INSTALL file
has tips for finding out what is wrong.

Qpopper doesn't read the /etc/passwd file itself, it uses getpwnam()
and friends.

The error you are getting means the getpwnam() call failed. Usually
this is because the user, as entered, does not exist. If it's a case
issue, you can use the 'downcase-user' config file or '-c'
command-line option to force user names into lower case. It might be
some other problem, such as the system not having enough memory to
allocate the structure, but this seems unlikely.

You might create a new, test user, and see if you can log in to
Qpopper using that. If you still have a problem, send the log
snippet, and don't edit the user name at all. (You said you changed
the text in this case, so we can't see what was actually entered.)

When you check if the user is in the /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow
files, be sure to grep on exactly what is in the log -- use
copy-and-paste, don't retype.

Server mode and standalone mode are different. You can use either,
both, or none.

If you didn't compile with '--enable-standalone' then it's in inetd
mode. You need to have inetd launch it. See the INSTALL file for
details. If you want it to be always running then you need to
compile with '--enable-standalone' and launch it (and have it
launched on system start).

I tried what you said, compiling it with: ./configure --enable-standalone

When I'm done, and I try to run it, either with 'popper', or 'popper -s' nothing
happens... Any ideas?

That's normal. When you close a socket, it goes into the TIME_WAIT
state for 4 minutes. This prevents a socket from getting reused too
soon on a high-latency connection, and having some packets from a new
connection misinterpreted as late packets from an old connection.

Meanwhile, don't use Netscape for this level of debugging, use telnet.
It tests for a much simpler condition, and lets you see what bytes are
going across the wire. Simply connecting to qpopper with telnet should
get you a banner, so you don't even need to know the POP3 protocol to
see if it's working.

Also normal. In standalone mode, qpopper forks into the background. If
there were no errors, you'll get back your command prompt. You can
check your system logs to see if qpopper has reported anything
interesting. Use "ps axf" to see if it's running.

In my experience, I tried it with a capital -S and it worked.

Try 'ps -x | grep popper' (or whichever ps flags you need on your
platform). It's probably running. Also, try 'telnet localhost 110'
and see if you get the banner.

Also, you are using 3.1.2, right?

"Standard Linux authentication" is much more complex these days. I
have noticed that some distributions are, by default, using MD5
encrypted passwords rather than 'crypt'-encrypted. The choice is
greatly extended by the use of PAM.

Do you know what you are using?

Ok...I think we might be on to something. I went into LinuxConf and went
into virtual mail domains. I deleted the users that were there and added a
new one(all lower case). I then checked my passwd file and the new user was
not there. I do have a file named shadow (no extension) and the new user
doesnt exist in there either.

So here is where I am at...

Does the existence of a shadow file mean that the system is using shadow
passwords?

What is the correct procedure for entering user id's and passwords for
virtual domains?

Is there some other package I should be using for hosting a whole bunch of
virtual domains?

Thanks in advance...
