What is the easiest way for a common user to see a list of the members of a
distrobution list?

background:

Small company, around 150 users. NT domain, running Worldmail for email.
We have quite a few distrobution lists and users want to be able to check
and see who is on a list before they send email to it.

1) If you don't already have any, create at least one automatic "list
management agent" in your domain. To do this, right-click the domain =
name,
choose Add->Robot, give it a name ("majordomo" is common), and take the
defaults.

Then,

2) Send the word "Help" in the message body to that Worldmail list =
management
agent. The text I've attached below will be returned to you. "WHO <list>"=
 is
the command you're looking for.

The commands are also documented deep within the Worldmail "Dynatext" =
help
thing.

Subject: Slightly OT (but from a WM install!): Pinging from a DU, produces no

Hi,

Wonder if anyone can help my frazzled, over alcohol stimulated mind
which just isn't working at the moment :o)

A client is trying to set WM to Auto-dial into an ISP they are
pinging the ISP from the machine loaded with WM (modem also on this
machine) but instead of getting the error that then offers the Dial
up choices-- it simply states IP address invalid.
Client is operating a simple peer to peer network, local domain
passing through WM OK.

This is the first time I've come across this, which must simply mean
that all other installations were a breeze !

Hope you can shove me in the right direction-appreciated!

Mike

Worldmail doesn't dial the phone itself; instead, it depends on Windows =
NT
noticing the failed IP, waking up, and doing its own autodial thing. The
Windows NT 4.0 autodial feature was extremely flakey. I'm not sure =
whether
things have improved under Win2000. I never saw the WinNT version offer =
any
dialup dialog box -- you had to go edit the registry to change any =
settings.

But in any case, for a start, go into WinNT/Win2000 Services and make =
sure
that the Remote Access Auto Connection Manager service is, at least, =
running.

=46or more advice, a Win2000 newsgroup would probably be more fruitful =
than
this mailing list. A search on Dejanews for Auto Connection Manager would
probably also be fruitful.

I recently sent out instructions to our company describing step by step how
to use the PAM to turn their auto-reply on and off. Fairly simple
procedure.

Since then, a couple of people have reported that after turning their
auto-reply off, it continues to send a BLANK auto-reply to people. Has
anyone ever heard of this problem?

Thanks,

It is amazing how when you post a problem, everyone responds with the
obvious. :)

I should have been a little more in depth about the trouble shooting that I
had done already.

When users let me know that they are still sending blank autoreply messages
after turning their message off, I go in through the PAM and check out their
account. The Auto reply window is empty. If they had "left a blank space
in the auto-reply" I would see it there, right?

I was thinking that if this is what they are doing, possibly the PAM doesnt
put that single blank space into the auto-reply text window or something, so
even tho it is there it isnt displayed.

Any thoughts?

-Brian

Try looking at the settings for the auto-reply through the management
center. I have always set the auto-reply that way with success.

Sure, that would work great. The idea is to let the users do it themselves
to reduce administration requirements.

Or was that supposed to be a joke? Since I mentioned that people always
suggest the obvious.

Subject: Really deleting mail

I've hit upon an odd problem with my WorldMail server. In summary, it
looks as though messages are never really being deleted from the server
message store. For example, I can use Netscape Messenger on my NT PC and
look at my IMAP mailbox. I have a folder for WorldMail mail and it has
19 messages, all read.

If I now go to my Mac and start up Outlook Express 5 and point it at the
same mailbox, I see the 19 items displayed, *but* the message count is
159. If I turn off the Preference to hide deleted IMAP mail I see all
159 messages, dating back to March 2000 (which is when I installed
WorldMail!). The messages are marked as deleted but the content is still
there. No wonder my disk space is disappearing so quickly!

What is happening here? Does WorldMail never purge deleted mail? How do
I get rid of these unwanted messages? I can't see any options in the
management program and the docs aren't very informative on this.

Any advice much appreciated.

This is a cryptographically signed message in MIME format.

In order to delete imap messages you need to set netscape to do so. By
default it is not set that way. Use Edit, Preferences, Mail & Newsgroups,
Mail Servers, Incoming Mail Servers (select your server), edit and look
under the IMAP tab, there are alot of configuration options here to delete
messages, DELETE IMMEDIATELY will certainly take care of the issue, but use
what makes the most sense for your situation.

This is a function of IMAP4 rather than the mail server.
Delete in IMAP4 is more like Mark For Delete.
Expunge is the command name which really removes them.
All of the different mail clients do this in a different way - but look for
things like ... Purge - or perhaps Delete on Exit.

Hi All

Just wondering if any body knows a way to set worldmail to reject any email
sent to server that has an *.exe attachment or maybe a filter in eurdora
mail client software to do this.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

You could do this in WorldMail, but it requires writing a small
program, using the API.

You can do this in Eudora fairly easily:
      if [header] [Content-Type:] [contains] [.exe]
           [transfer to] [trash]

Short notice, but I have just been notified that some engineers within my
company wants to move our company website and email down to their remote
office and manage it from there, probably on a Unix or Linux server with I
don't yet know what email server. However, those in management here are
questioning the idea, as am I. It would take control away from this
location, which happens to be the company's Headquarters.

In preparation for a meeting this morning, I would like to quickly learn
something about Relaying between offices, or any other option that might
make a suitable compromise, if necessary. The think is, they want to take
our entire domain down there, but many of the users are here. How does this
work with Worldmail? We would still need it's SMTP services here, more than
likeley, but would also like to house our email accounts here still, even
though DNS could end up pointing to the other office's Server.

Any ideas welcome!

There are a number of ways to do this. You could set up a different
server at each office, and have user's accounts be on one or the
other. That way a user's real account would be something like
'mary@south.example.com" or "joe@north.example dot com". You could
create aliases for each account in the main domain, such as
"mary@example dot com", which point to the actual account.

If you use WorldMail at each office you can control either server
with the same Management Center from any NT system.

I use NetSheild SMTP from NAI. It's part of their "Total Virus Protection"
suite of software.

It sets itself up as your primary mail server, scans for viruses, then
passes email to the real (Worldmail) server.

It has provisions for filtering, blocking, scanning, etc. as well as virus
removal.

See http://www.mcafeeb2b.com/products/webshield-smtp/default.asp for
complete information.

And don't forget to make that to make WebShield SMTP "live" in the same
server as Worldmail, you'll have to do some registry hacking.
What for? to get worldmail to listen to another port (NOT 25, smtp port),
and then set WebShield SMTP to listen to port 25, and pass-thru the data to
WorldMails NEW smtp port.
Just a tip,

I would also consider InterScan VirusWall from Trend Micro. There are
separate programs for SMTP, HTTP, and FTP filtering that can be installed
directly onto the target servers or onto separate servers, and there is a
plug-in module, eManager, for content filtering.

http://www.antivirus.com/products/isvw/
http://www.antivirus.com/products/isem/

We use Trend OfficeScan to manage desktop virus scanning and have been very
pleased with the results. Pattern (".dat") file, scan engine, and software
updates are pushed to all the desktops in real time, and you can view
incidents and status firmwide through a browser from anywhere on the
network. You will find some language issues in the manuals (much of the
software and documentation seems to be written in the Far East), but the
software itself has been very solid. E-mail support generally returns
answers overnight when we run into problems (such as wrecking the privileges
on IIS, oops).

From Trend, InterScan is $2400/100 users and eManager is $600/100 users.
OfficeScan adds about $720/100 users (buy.com). The best deal is actually a
suite targeted toward Exchange users, which bundles InterScan, OfficeScan,
ServerProtect (for NT servers) and the Exchange scanner (which none of us
needs) for $2920/100 users (buy.com).

http://www.antivirus.com/products/neatsuite/exchange.htm

You can order a 30 day free trial of the full product line on CD from the
web site. (I just got mine and haven't had a chance to load the e-mail
products as of yet.)

A 2-year subscription to NAI's Total Virus Defense is $5600/100 users, with
no support. I didn't see a way to order WebShield separately. Of course,
cost probably is an issue only in my shop. ;-)

Everyone,

My organization uses Worldmail 2.0 on a small NT 4.0 server with about 25
clients. We have been using Worldmail for the past 2 years, with only an
occasional (i.e. once every few months) problem with smptd.exe causing an
access violation, forcing a restart of the Eudora Worldmail service.
Lately, however, we have begun experiencing daily occurences of this
problem, along with instances where smtpd.exe suddenly begins taking 100%
processor time and refuses to shut down, necessitating a reboot to restore
order. We are running on a K6-2 450, 128 MB RAM, 5 GB free hard drive

What about enabling worldmail log files? Then, after a crash you can check
out what happened.
What about your connection? are you connected through a dial-up connection?
dns servers? are they a-ok?

We no longer use Worldmail, we switched away to NTmail. But we used
Worldmail for several years without a glitch... well we had to switch away
from Worldmail because we were being used as a relay server, and when that
happened Worldmail simply died (100% cpu usage and started eating every
single byte of memory). Maybe this is? are you sure you are not being used
as a mail relay server??

Best wishes,
-Andy

The relaying issue is easily solved by disabling Relaying. The down side is
that any alias that you have previously created will have to be deleted and
re-entered as Distribution groups, because aliases won't work anymore, at
least externally. They will still work internally.

As for smtpd taking 100% of the CPU...I have that problem once a week or
so... I used to have it more. I was working with Qualcomm's tech support
on the issue. Here in reverse order are the messages exchanged back and
forth. In short, he seems to be blaming it on smtp services other than
those related to Worldmail trying to run in conjunction with Worldmail's
smtp services. I do remember doing something at this point. This was early
last year.:

Hi,
This may have provided us with a clue as to what is going on. Check your
Services control panel for anything that says SMTP. I do not believe that
SMTPSVC is WorldMail (possibly IIS?). If anything, it should be listed in
your Event viewer as WorldMail SMTP:  {See the attached BMP}

Thanks,

        Error Code: 40 27 00 00

This error has shown up consistently identical for a couple of weeks now.
Other than that, the Event Viewer System logs are clean. The Application

Oh yeah, and SMTPD.EXE is Dates 11/12/97, 4:03pm, 430kb in size.

All previous messages are still listed below, with the exception of the
original message I sent to you. The problem we have been having is that
SMTPD.EXE tends to take 97% of CPU time after running for 1 to 2 days. SMTP
Relaying has been disabled for about 3 weeks now, so I know it shouldn't be
anyone Spamming through our system from outside.

Within the last week, the system has actually had Dr. Watson errors with
SMTPD, causing the service to stop altogether, and requiring a reboot.
Sometimes that error would occur after a fresh reboot. This server was
re-installed about 2 months ago, and the Mailboxes and users restored to the
new install. This was done due to a bad drive.

Attached you will find a log file that contains the before and after data.
I created using the method you describe below. Unfortunately, most of the
time this happens is after hours. I would have to guess that the error
happened within this log about half way through, or perhaps later. I would
appreciate any help that you could give me! FYI, our email Server in
question is smtp.presearch.com.

> Lately, however, we have begun experiencing daily occurences of this
> problem, along with instances where smtpd.exe suddenly begins taking 100%
> processor time and refuses to shut down, necessitating a reboot to restore
> order. We are running on a K6-2 450, 128 MB RAM, 5 GB free hard drive
> space. This server has IIS on it, as well as serving as a database server
> for about 4 clients. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Robert,

i have this same problem like you. I thought it was the program that has a
bug but actually
its spammers. The mail server got over loaded with undelivered messages and
jam up the queue
forcing the mail server's smtp.exe to fail and halted.

You can check your log file and also your message queue to find out if there
are spammers or not.
You got to ban the spammers if they are using your server to relay messages.
Thats what i did.. found
the cause and took action.

I hope it works for you.

I have all unauthorized relaying shut off on our worldmail server, so that
isnt the reason our smtpd is crapping out.

I cleared out the event logs because there was so much garbage in them..
next time it dies I will see what the message says.

Due that worldmail doesn't have many features regarding anti-spam, if you
intend to continue using WorldMail you can install in the same server
something like McAfee WebShield SMTP (www.nai.com), with this great product
besides scanning for viruses all your server's email you do have some other
anti-spam features.

Once again, we switched from WorldMail+WebShield to NTmail+WebShield, just
because due to our service spammers could still get around it. NTmail has
one particular feature we haven't seen any place else. It's just an option
that reads:
"Disallow relay, but allow mail where MAIL clause or more than one RCPT
clause is local"
That means: if the email is FROM one true local email-account OR if the
email is FOR one true local email-account, then it's ok

Best luck,
-andy

Subject: Documentation on writing an external agent?

I am considering buying a copy of WorldMail Server for home to manage email for my extended family and for creating some mailing lists. I also envision creating some external mail agents that let me manage stuff like grocery lists (simple commands to add
things to a grocery list or to return the current list, etc.). Anyway, I'm curious if there is any documentation out there to help create these agents. I looked in the archives and didn't really see anything.

Jon

btw, if anyone is interested, the agents I create will be freely available - isn't vaporware great? :)

[Something I circulated to our users that I thought might be of use in light
of recent news. The original, more dramatic version ran in VBScript, so
Netscape users didn't get alerted. If the mail list software does not
handle HTML, here is the script code:
<SCRIPT language=javascript>
alert("Virus vulnerability assessment under way...")
document.write("<h2>Be very afraid!!</h2>")
document.write("<p>You need to <i>tighten up</i> your e-mail security
settings.</p>")
document.write("<p><b>Microsoft Outlook</b> See this page: <a

rs.nbci.com/jeffrospud/outlook/OL_secur.html</a></p>")
document.write("<p><b>Netscape Communicator</b> Choose Preferences... from
the Edit menu, click Advanced, then uncheck the box next to Enable
JavaScript for mail and news.</p>")
</SCRIPT>]

This is a test of whether your mail client will run in-line JavaScript in a
message. You might need to double-click this message to open it, rather
than simply view it in the preview window, to fully test your mail client.
If nothing exciting happens, your security setting for scripting are
probably okay. (But you still need to beware of attachments.)

Subject: PDF attachments via WM to Sendmail 8.11 servers

Hi,

WM seems to have problems when sending PDF attachments to send mail
8.11 servers not accepting MIME based attachments. Does it comes from
the 8 bit encoding of the transport?

Any help, gratefully received!

We have encountered random problems with "failed conversions" for
attachments, typically rogue Word documents. We advise users to change
their Outlook mail settings to "base 64" encoding rather than "plain text"
and when they resend the messages go through (Tools|Options|Internet Email
tab). This still is MIME encoding; we do not suggest users change to
UUencoding, but you could try that if our PDF problem is stubborn.
Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, this is a global setting for Outlook
and cannot be set per message. Hope this helps.

Hi,

WM seems to have problems when sending PDF attachments to send mail
8.11 servers not accepting MIME based attachments. Does it comes from
the 8 bit encoding of the transport?

Any help, gratefully received!

Thanks.

Mike

Thanks Jefferson..your response got me thinking that it was more a
problem at the client end than at the server end: When I checked the
system in question--Netscape wasn't set to handle 8 bit Quoteable
Printed, and so was changed to accomodate this. Now the PDF's and
other attachments are getting through to those destinations otherwise
unattainable-but, a few emails are coming through quite garbled!

I'll advise them to move to a 'proper' client ;o)

Thanks again, for your input.

Mike

Might be of use to some of you. For your peace of mind, you probably will

If you have implemented Microsoft's Outlook security updates, the changes

Hello, as a further step in securing Windows against viruses, I have
developed a script that will prevent certain programs (JavaScript and
VBScript) from running automatically when double-clicked. To run *my*
script, of course, you only need to double-click it and choose the "open it"
option. After it runs, if you try it again, it should pop up in the Notepad
editor rather than actually running.

Note 1: all sorts of other executable files still will find their way into
your email, and you should be cautious about all of them, particularly any
that end in .exe or .com. Thank you for your continued vigilance, and feel
free to email me with any questions.

Note 2: if Windows reports that there is no association for this file, then
you cannot use this script to update your system.  Please save this message;
if/when you update Microsoft Internet Explorer, you will need to run it.

If you have any problems with this process, please let me know.

-Jefferson

Hello All,

As I'm new to the group I have a question concerning Worldmail. We're a
smaller company under 70 users and I'm having a problem with Message
Relaying in WorldMail. We invoked message relaying under the Security
option in Worldmail and set it to allow relaying only to our company
network address and netmask. My dilemma now is that now our outside
sales people can receive mail from anyone here inside the company but
not from anyone outside the company. The outside sales people have an
Alias's to they're ISP e-mail address. This is done so all company
e-mails are the same. So if I were to use any e-mail address other than
the company(in-house) address it comes back with message relaying not
allowed. My question is, Is there a way to invoke message relaying AND
have mail sent to the Alias from our local e-mail domain? Any insight at
all would be appreciated.

Thank You

Quick and easy? question.
Is there an easy way to block incoming mail with attachments an
redirect
them to a "secure" machine? Or, only allow a few people to have
attachments
sent to them? We have had some trouble with viruses been sent to us and
would like to stop that since our users don't always follow our

I just received a notice from AOL that I needed to close the open relay of
our mail server. I went into WorldMail and set it up to only relay mail
from our local intranet IP's. Now the problem remains that employees who
travel or work from home won't be able to relay mail with our server. Is
there a way to configure WorldMail to do this without having to specifically
allow all those IP's? It seems there should be a way to just authenticate
the user, then allow relay.
thank you,
Bryan

You were the second to respond to say that WorldMail can't do this.
I think I am going to just abandon this software. What really gripes
me, is this would never have been an issue, if AOL wouldn't have banned
our IP. I don't understand that.

My question then, is, what e-mail server software would you recommend?

I was reading through some old messages on this list and saw that Vircom had
some
nice software that looks to be able to do what I want.

Worldmail isn't that sophisticated. The only way to do it would be through
a VPN connection. Then when users logged into that VPN connection, they
would receive a local IP (from your network). This way it wouldn't be a
relay.

However, somebody once gave me an IP that could be used for relaying. Your
option is to have each user set their ISP's email server for the SMTP
portion or use this or another like it. Keep in mind that SPAM is not
allowed, so please don't use it for SPAM! The SMTP Server is:

I don't know about any of the cheap software. Higher end servers, such as
Exchange Server, work great for these situations, allowing web-based access,
as well as authenticated access. The only authenticated access for email
with respect to Worldmail is the POP3 side. SMTP is wide open!

Hmm, I wonder what their battle is, and how long it has been going on?!
It's been years since v2.0 came out.... The only saving grace here is that

Due to legal issues with the company we codeveloped the product with, we
are unable to make any updates, patches or changes to the WorldMail server
until these legal issues are resolved.
