We replaced Worldmail with NTmail.
Reason? "we needed some sort of way to avoid being used as a relay server"
Due to our specific needs and clients configurations (they have dynamic
IPs), we selected NTmail from www.gordano.co.uk.
Why? At the time, it was the only one wich had a specific anti-spam feature:
"only accept mail to/from local domains"

We use it in combination with WebShield SMTP from ww.nai.com.

Great product once you set it right.

It has tons of features, we only use the smtp and pop3 services right now.
It has an incorporated list server, web mail, web proxy, av addin, it's own
macro language.
All configuration is done via a web browser.

I remember we had no way to migrate automatically all accounts from the old
Worldmail server to NTmail.

Has anyone replaced their Worldmail server with another NT platform server.
I am looking to upgrade and have my eye on IMail and MDaemon. Please give
any suggestions on mail server software or thoughts about the two I have
show above. Thanks!

We are, but according to a Eudora tech support article (see below), the
server name value is gotten from the registry. If I edit those registry

settings, then they will be overwritten the next time the server boots
(MS
kb #Q228805) or I'm afraid that the server will no longer function
properly
in an AD domain. If I edit those registry keys (and the NV
Hostname/Domain
keys) will the server still function properly? Or, is there another
solution?

I really appreciate this string, because I was planning to switch TO
 WorldMail - and perhaps I shouldn't!

I've been using Infinite Interchange for many years with great success
EXCEPT that there is a quirk with Eudora clients - Eudora clients cannot
see HTML mail delivered from InterChange! I'd like to use Eudora clients -
 so I'm thinking of switching.

I use InterChange with InterScan smtp antivirus on the same box, so I need
to be able to switch the smtp port on the mail server to 26 or something.
It works great - daily updates - and great service.

Hello
I recently buy 25 user add-on for Qualcomm Worldmail server
I received by mail SN and Activation Code
I don't find where put codes in the soft !!!

Support tells me:
"
You can enter the correct License information by following the steps below:
1.	Open the Management Center and log in
2.	Right click the server icon and select License Management
3.	In the License Management screen, enter the Serial Number, omitting the
000- from the number (EG E1112345)
4.	Enter the Activation Key
5.	Click Add key
The license information should show under Activation Keys and the
Description column will show how many users each license is for.
"

BUT

1. I open the Management Center and log in
2. when i Right click the server icon, options available are X400. Mail
connection and CLose connections !

=> IS THERE ANOTHER MEANS TO REGISTER ???

Thanks a lot !

That would happen if the management center cannot talk to the RMAP process.
First thing is to get your Management Center correctly managing your
WorldMail server.
Once you can perform general management commands - like View Logs - then you
can right click etc.

Assuming that you are running the management center on same machine as
WorldMail ...
what do you see if you run the following command line prompt ..
telnet localhost 4299
telnet localhost 4200
telnet localhost 4201

OK - that shows everything is running fine.
So - next step .... find and run ISOTRACE.EXE - and in the menus ... enable
verbose tracing on SMTP/POP3 and connect using telnet ... [as below] ... you
should then see your connection appear in ISOTRACE windows ... this will
show that tracing is working ...
then connect using Management Centre and see what happens [you can set trace
to record to a file at same time as screen output - it flushes to disk on
exit of ISOTRACE]

[as far as I remember ... RMAP does not send output to ISOTRACE ... but it
does write to its own log files which you can find on disk]

[if you post ISOTRACE output here then edit out and security info]

Does anyone know if there's a quick and easy way to add a large # of

Its for company use, currently, 1 of my users sends alerts to all our
clients using a local address book, I need for it to be accessible to
others, but at the same time do NOT want other users in the company to have

Probably the easiest way is to pull them into a text editor, create
subscribe commands for each one (copy and paste), and then paste that whole
thing into an email message - it is a kludge, but should work. It is a lot
faster than doing it with a mouse...

Yes, there is...

If they are all in a text file, paste them into the third column in an
Excel spreadsheet. Then fill the first column with the word Subscribe and
the second column with the name of the list. Now save as a text file (tab
delimited, I believe). Finally, open that text file and paste it into a
message addressed to the robot user you have set up for the list (if you
don't have a robot user, you can add one easily enough). Once the robot
receives it, it will process the new entries into the list.

Thanks all who responded. The robot solution actually worked very well. In
Eudora's defense, this IS sort of covered in the manual, although not in a
way that I would have thought to do this without your suggestions.

Its for company use, currently, 1 of my users sends alerts to all our
clients using a local address book, I need for it to be accessible to
others, but at the same time do NOT want other users in the company to have
a local copy of it.

Does anyone know if there's a quick and easy way to add a large # of
non-local addresses into a distro list? Maybe I'm a complete idiot, but
I can't seem to find any other way than to add them manually one-by-one.
This seems absurd.

I hope everyone is safe and sound after the events of this week.

Is there any way to turn off the mail logs in WorldMail Server?

Maybe by pointing them to somewhere that doesn't exist ... or setting the
free space check to more than the space available ...

But I don't think you can turn them off - and usually people would not want
to because it provides a record for administrators and helps trap possible
abuse.

You can turn off logging in the server by setting the log directory to an
empty string. Make sure to do this for both smtpd and imsd as each has its
own setting.

Has anyone run into the problem where a file named worldmail.dat is sent
out with various email? This is not an internal
thing; only when email is sent to an outside domain. In nearly every
email that I send, the attachment is there.

There is not a virus on the server which WorldMail is running, so I'm
not sure what's causing this.

You have to use a special SMTP scanner in front of the mail server. See

Actually, Norton -will- detect those viruses (as long as it's set to
scan the file in the first place - *.new isn't considered a vulnerable
file format unless you configure it so).

Here's the list of format filters that were included with NAV 7.0 on my
W2K machine. Their purpose should be somewhat evident:

DEC2AMG.DLL
DEC2ARJ.DLL
DEC2CAB.DLL
DEC2EXE.DLL
DEC2GHO.DLL
DEC2GZIP.DLL
DEC2HQX.DLL
DEC2HTTP.DLL
DEC2ID.DLL
DEC2LHA.DLL
DEC2LZ.DLL
DEC2MIME.DLL (*)
DEC2MSG.DLL
DEC2OLE1.DLL
DEC2RAR.DLL
DEC2RTF.DLL
DEC2SS.DLL
DEC2TAR.DLL
DEC2TNEF.DLL
DEC2UUE.DLL (*)
DEC2ZIP.DLL

(*) - These filters are the main ones you'd rely on.

Is there any reason why Eudora Worldmail (2.0 - 1.40.151) service would
simply stop without logging anything in the IMS or SMTP or event log? I
restart the service and it works for a few days, then just stops...

Which service??? Did you check both the System and Application logs in the
event viewer? The Application log should have something in it...

I have been running worldmail for about two years. I have about 1,300
mailboxes. We have seen a repeated problem with the SMTP Daemon
crashing (SMTPD). It just fails and generates a Dr watson crash dump.
I have searched through the Worldmail log files repeatedly but they show
nothing that seems even remotely related. I have written to this group
about it to and did not receive any responses other than "It happens to
me too. If you figure it out let us know."

If I restart SMTPD it will just restart and run like nothing ever
happened. only to crash again either minutes, or days later. We have
found no pattern to the crashes other than they tend to happen at times
of high mail system load.

Other than this fatal problem, worldmail works fine for us.

I had a similar issue, as you might see below in copies of my exchanges
with Qualcomm Eudora Worldmail Server support. The issue I had was that
I had IIS installed on the system, which included SMTP support for IIS.
I had to remove SMTP support....actually, I removed IIS from that
server.

My (Tom Kemp) discussions with William Hultman last year:

Hi,
This may have provided us with a clue as to what is going on. Check
your Services control panel for anything that says SMTP. I do not
believe that SMTPSVC is WorldMail (possibly IIS?). If anything, it
should be listed in your Event viewer as WorldMail SMTP:

Thanks,

Bill

Ok, going to see if we can figure out a pattern. Here is some
additional information. When the systems SMTP service crashes, the
message in the Event Viewer states the following:

        SMTPSVC
Service could not bind instance 1
        Error Code: 40 27 00 00

This error has shown up consistently identical for a couple of weeks
now. Other than that, the Event Viewer System logs are clean. The
Application logs have a few errors listed based on Isocor errors, but
that has been the norm since the beginning. They were usually messages
that apparently had errors of one type or another.

Oh yeah, and SMTPD.EXE is Dates 11/12/97, 4:03pm, 430kb in size.

All previous messages are still listed below, with the exception of the
original message I sent to you. The problem we have been having is that
SMTPD.EXE tends to take 97% of CPU time after running for 1 to 2 days.
SMTP Relaying has been disabled for about 3 weeks now, so I know it
shouldn't be anyone Spamming through our system from outside.

Within the last week, the system has actually had Dr. Watson errors with
SMTPD, causing the service to stop altogether, and requiring a reboot.
Sometimes that error would occur after a fresh reboot. This server was
re-installed about 2 months ago, and the Mailboxes and users restored to
the new install. This was done due to a bad drive.

Attached you will find a log file that contains the before and after
data. I created using the method you describe below. Unfortunately,
most of the time this happens is after hours. I would have to guess
that the error happened within this log about half way through, or
perhaps later. I would appreciate any help that you could give me!
FYI, our email Server in question is smtp.presearch.com.

Hi,
If you could create a log of the problem described above, I would
appreciate it. Here is what you need to do in order to do this:
Open the WorldMail Protocol Trace by going to
Start:Programs:WorldMail:WorldMail Protocol Trace
Once you have it open, click Trace:Trace Log file...
Enter a file name for the log file and select a location to save it and
click OK.
Now click Trace:SMTP:Verbose.
Then click Trace:IMS:Verbose.
Now try and duplicate the problem.

After you have successfully logged the problem, please send me the log
you created. I will look at it and get back to you. Thanks,

Bill

It was the SMTP service built in to IIS that was causing conflicts with
Worldmail's SMTP service. By removing the SMTP service associated with
IIS, the issue would almost completely go away. Since I did this last
year, I haven't had SMTPD errors but once every few months. Of course,
I also have my servers rebooted via APC's Powerchute software, which is
a good idea on any NT4 server. This frees up wasted memory from
services that never released the memory when they were done.

I'm not clear if you're saying that IIS w/SMTP support caused the issue,

per se, or just made that much more overhead? We don't have IIS loaded
on
our mail server & still get this error.

We have had IIS SMTP service disabled for a long time and this problem is
just starting to show up (running WM 2+years). We need to run IIS on the
server.

Is there any way to reboot on a DrWatson event without using APC?

(I am original poster of this thread.)

Phil,
You can run IIS without the smtp services, supposedly. I have another
server running IIS, so I didn't really need it on my email server.
That's why I removed it all. If you run the Add/Remove Programs control
panel, and select IIS, it will give you an option to add or remove
features. Then you can remove just the smtp feature in IIS.

We have had IIS SMTP service disabled for a long time and this problem
is
just starting to show up (running WM 2+years). We need to run IIS on the
server.

Is there any way to reboot on a DrWatson event without using APC?

(I am original poster of this thread.)

Worldmail's SMTP service. By removing the SMTP service associated with
IIS,
the issue would almost completely go away. Since I did this last year,
I
haven't had SMTPD errors but o

APC's Powerchute software, which is a good idea on any NT4 server. This
frees up wasted memory from services that never released the memory when
they were done.

Are you saying that these are applications that work with Worldmail to
provide internet access to users email, or are they just for accessing
account information/management? Just curious. An app to provide web
access to email, send and receive, would be a great feature for our
offsite employees. Of course, then security becomes more of an issue!

They are not management interfaces, but rather interfaces that allows user
to read/ create/ reply/ whatever with their e-mail accounts. Infinite
WebMail has more security features than the Deerfield Worldclient to prevent
hackers.

As for Webshield SMTP, I cannot find any hint of a price for it. Perhaps
it
no longer is a real product. Cheapest Webshield I can find, the
"Appliance"
with license for 500, runs $12,000.

I got inspired to see if there actually was a cheap solution. I'm
thinking of
just running something in a frequent loop from a command script, pointed
at
the just the Worldmail folders. Not a perfect solution, but better than
the
"nothing" that I have.

So I downloaded the Norton and McAfee demos.

Norton Antivirus *does* pick up viruses located in .NEW files. The Norton
command-line mode is not very flexible, but it's adequate. Each time it
is
run, the Norton command-line mode requires 10 seconds of crashing around
on
the disk and the CPU, and flashing things on and off the Windows menubar.
Even if it is only checking one file. It's not pleasant. (If you had a
machine dedicated to Worldmail it would be OK.)

McAfee Virusscan has a lovely command-line mode, with lots of options,
which
runs quickly and efficiently. Unfortunately, the McAfee product does not
pick
up any viruses that are still within .NEW files.

Any other ones I should check?

Webshield SMTP is included in Network Associates Active Virus Defense
Suite, price is based on license quantity. It is a lot cheaper than an
"Appliance"

In some way, Trend is cheaper than McAfee. McAfee is trying to switch to
ASP
antivirus services and the price for that is outrageous, almost $60 a pop.
 but the beauty
of it is you only install only an agent at each client pc.

If we could afford Trend, I would love to switch Worldmail, but for our ne

options (IMAIL from Ipswitch$$$ and Mercury (David Harris, free)) but the

come yet to make the change. sorry for the diversion.

Webshield SMTP comes included with the Total virus defense suite, I don't
think they
sell it by it self, only as a web appliance. It works ok for us but we st
ill have some
issues like for the past week or so, the virus log is clear cristal, when
we know that we
got the nimda on some servers...

the other option is Messagelabs which they claim they clean 100% of the vi
rus. Our
parent company is using them and they are very pleased.

My Worldmail box is on an NT 4 server. I generally just make changes at the
box itself when I need to.

I'd like to install the management console on my laptop, which runs Win2k,
but the installation program crashes when I tell it to install the
management center.

I thought Worldmail and the Management Center ran under Win2k? Will the
management center only work if the server software is also installed if its

Subject: Mgmt Console on Win2k

My Worldmail box is on an NT 4 server. I generally just make changes at the
box itself when I need to.

I'd like to install the management console on my laptop, which runs Win2k,
but the installation program crashes when I tell it to install the
management center.

I thought Worldmail and the Management Center ran under Win2k? Will the
management center only work if the server software is also installed if its
on Win2k?

Thanks
Paul

Nimda is not only an e-mail virus. It spreads from Web server to Web
server, through the Directory Traversal exploit, and also through directory
shares, so you could easily get it on your servers without detecting it at
the mail server. And since it arrives at the Web server through port 80, an
ordinary firewall wouldn't stop it either.

Webshield SMTP has worked well for us, only failing to catch viruses too
new to be in the data file.

anyone got any insight on how to avoid being used as an open relay
server?

I host multiple domains, with IPs coming in from all over.. never the
same.

Any way to set restrictions? Any advice would be great!

thanks

yep, tough problem. they always find you eventually.
you may already know these basics, but i was happy to get this info starting out.
i host multiple domains as well, with many of them coming in over dialup round the country.
i've had good luck with allowing B & C blocks, without any spammers getting through.

for example in security : message relaying, i might allow
network address      netmask
100.50.0.0               255.255.0.0
this catches everything on that B block, and chances are that if they are using the same local dial up provider, their IP will fall in it.
you could even go a step further and do an entire A block
100.0.0.0                 255.0.0.0
depending on how many different places your people are checking from, this can work well.
when a new person connects, watch the Protocol Trace, and them allow that B or C block.
time consuming? a bit (maybe not viable, depending on number of users), and I admittedly don't have that many IPs allowed, about 40 B & C blocks and static IPs.

of course  if you have many, many users, this might be impractical. and keep in mind that aliases will no longer work, you must recreate them as distribution lists.
if users are consistently coming in from totally random IPs, then WM by itself will have to be an open relay. look to third party programs, or other mail server programs, that can authenticate SMTP traffic. other better informed members of this list (ther e are many) will be able to give some suggestions. (and nice web site at atomicusa).

Subject: Norton AV Gateways

Just installed Norton AntiVirus for Gateways 2.5.
Doing a nice job, easy install and configure.
I had read in a previous message about someone using port 1025 for WM, and
(arbitrarily) tried that port to start. Didn't work. Finally tried port
1026, and WM gets it just fine. Just a heads up for those using Windows
2000 Server / IIS 5. I haven't done any serious research into what ports
are used/reserved for W2K server - anyone have a URL of a nice list?

My server has two physical network jacks (on one box) I can assign IPs.
Can I assign NAV to listen on 1.2.3.125 port 25 on network slot 2
and then send the mail to WM 1.2.3.5 port 25 on network slot 1?
Can you use the same port on different NICs/IPs on the same box?

Thanks, Ferris

Subject: Protocol Trace and Terminal Services

I connect to my W2K box remotely via Terminal Services (running in remote
administration mode) - works great and MUCH faster than PCAnywhere.
I notice that the Protocol Trace does not work with terminal services - the
trace window remains blank.
(The only thing I can get to show up in TS are the tests, which in both
connections returns:
11:17:16.14: [3164] TPI: TransportStart - device
11:17:16.14: [3164] TPI: cannot open service 'ISOSTACK.' error 1060
this is not a problem, just the only thing i can get to show up)

Trace works fine via PCAnywhere. Any thoughts? (Not familiar enough with TS
to know how it's sessions might separate system processes...?)

Thanks for the third time, Ferris

The freeware program VNC seems to me to be much faster than PCAnywhere. We
use it to manage our servers.
