We replaced Worldmail with NTmail.
Reason? "we needed some sort of way to avoid being used as a relay server"
Due to our specific needs and clients configurations (they have dynamic
IPs), we selected NTmail from www.gordano.co.uk.
Why? At the time, it was the only one wich had a specific anti-spam feature:
"only accept mail to/from local domains"
We use it in combination with WebShield SMTP from ww.nai.com.
Great product once you set it right.
It has tons of features, we only use the smtp and pop3 services right now.
It has an incorporated list server, web mail, web proxy, av addin, it's own
macro language.
All configuration is done via a web browser.
I remember we had no way to migrate automatically all accounts from the old
Worldmail server to NTmail.

We are, but according to a Eudora tech support article (see below), the
server name value is gotten from the registry. If I edit those registry

WorldMail - and perhaps I shouldn't!
I've been using Infinite Interchange for many years with great success
EXCEPT that there is a quirk with Eudora clients - Eudora clients cannot
see HTML mail delivered from InterChange! I'd like to use Eudora clients -
so I'm thinking of switching.
I use InterChange with InterScan smtp antivirus on the same box, so I need
to be able to switch the smtp port on the mail server to 26 or something.
It works great - daily updates - and great service.

That would happen if the management center cannot talk to the RMAP process.
First thing is to get your Management Center correctly managing your
WorldMail server.
Once you can perform general management commands - like View Logs - then you
can right click etc.

OK - that shows everything is running fine.
So - next step .... find and run ISOTRACE.EXE - and in the menus ... enable
verbose tracing on SMTP/POP3 and connect using telnet ... [as below] ... you
should then see your connection appear in ISOTRACE windows ... this will
show that tracing is working ...
then connect using Management Centre and see what happens [you can set trace
to record to a file at same time as screen output - it flushes to disk on
exit of ISOTRACE]
[as far as I remember ... RMAP does not send output to ISOTRACE ... but it
does write to its own log files which you can find on disk]
[if you post ISOTRACE output here then edit out and security info]

Its for company use, currently, 1 of my users sends alerts to all our
clients using a local address book, I need for it to be accessible to
others, but at the same time do NOT want other users in the company to have
a local copy of it.

Probably the easiest way is to pull them into a text editor, create
subscribe commands for each one (copy and paste), and then paste that whole
thing into an email message - it is a kludge, but should work. It is a lot
faster than doing it with a mouse...

Yes, there is...
If they are all in a text file, paste them into the third column in an
Excel spreadsheet. Then fill the first column with the word Subscribe and
the second column with the name of the list. Now save as a text file (tab
delimited, I believe). Finally, open that text file and paste it into a
message addressed to the robot user you have set up for the list (if you
don't have a robot user, you can add one easily enough). Once the robot
receives it, it will process the new entries into the list.

non-local addresses into a distro list? Maybe I'm a complete idiot, but
I can't seem to find any other way than to add them manually one-by-one.

Maybe by pointing them to somewhere that doesn't exist ... or setting the
free space check to more than the space available ...
But I don't think you can turn them off - and usually people would not want
to because it provides a record for administrators and helps trap possible
abuse.

You can turn off logging in the server by setting the log directory to an
empty string. Make sure to do this for both smtpd and imsd as each has its

Has anyone run into the problem where a file named worldmail.dat is sent
out with various email? This is not an internal
thing; only when email is sent to an outside domain. In nearly every
email that I send, the attachment is there.
There is not a virus on the server which WorldMail is running, so I'm
not sure what's causing this.

Not to my knowledge, although NAV Corp Edition HAS been very good at
scanning files... period. I dont know if it actually does the trick, but
I HAVE notice NAV reporting viruses found in mailbox directories.
Also, look into Sophos AV. Great software and been around for a long
long time. I use them now and prefer it over McAfee or Norton... im
quite blown away by these guys.

You have to use a special SMTP scanner in front of the mail server. See

Actually, Norton -will- detect those viruses (as long as it's set to
scan the file in the first place - *.new isn't considered a vulnerable
file format unless you configure it so).

Which service??? Did you check both the System and Application logs in the
event viewer? The Application log should have something in it...

nothing that seems even remotely related. I have written to this group
about it to and did not receive any responses other than "It happens to
me too. If you figure it out let us know."
If I restart SMTPD it will just restart and run like nothing ever
happened. only to crash again either minutes, or days later. We have
found no pattern to the crashes other than they tend to happen at times
of high mail system load.
Other than this fatal problem, worldmail works fine for us.

I had a similar issue, as you might see below in copies of my exchanges
with Qualcomm Eudora Worldmail Server support. The issue I had was that
I had IIS installed on the system, which included SMTP support for IIS.
I had to remove SMTP support....actually, I removed IIS from that
server.

your Services control panel for anything that says SMTP. I do not
believe that SMTPSVC is WorldMail (possibly IIS?). If anything, it

data. I created using the method you describe below. Unfortunately,
most of the time this happens is after hours. I would have to guess
that the error happened within this log about half way through, or
perhaps later. I would appreciate any help that you could give me!
FYI, our email Server in question is smtp.presearch.com.

It was the SMTP service built in to IIS that was causing conflicts with
Worldmail's SMTP service. By removing the SMTP service associated with
IIS, the issue would almost completely go away. Since I did this last
year, I haven't had SMTPD errors but once every few months. Of course,
I also have my servers rebooted via APC's Powerchute software, which is
a good idea on any NT4 server. This frees up wasted memory from
services that never released the memory when they were done.

We have had IIS SMTP service disabled for a long time and this problem is

Phil,
You can run IIS without the smtp services, supposedly. I have another
server running IIS, so I didn't really need it on my email server.
That's why I removed it all. If you run the Add/Remove Programs control
panel, and select IIS, it will give you an option to add or remove
features. Then you can remove just the smtp feature in IIS.

They are not management interfaces, but rather interfaces that allows user
to read/ create/ reply/ whatever with their e-mail accounts. Infinite
WebMail has more security features than the Deerfield Worldclient to prevent
hackers.

management center only work if the server software is also installed if its
on Win2k?

Nimda is not only an e-mail virus. It spreads from Web server to Web
server, through the Directory Traversal exploit, and also through directory
shares, so you could easily get it on your servers without detecting it at
the mail server. And since it arrives at the Web server through port 80, an
ordinary firewall wouldn't stop it either.
Webshield SMTP has worked well for us, only failing to catch viruses too
new to be in the data file.

yep, tough problem. they always find you eventually.
you may already know these basics, but i was happy to get this info starting out.
i host multiple domains as well, with many of them coming in over dialup round the country.
i've had good luck with allowing B & C blocks, without any spammers getting through.
for example in security : message relaying, i might allow
network address netmask
100.50.0.0 255.255.0.0
this catches everything on that B block, and chances are that if they are using the same local dial up provider, their IP will fall in it.
you could even go a step further and do an entire A block
100.0.0.0 255.0.0.0
depending on how many different places your people are checking from, this can work well.
when a new person connects, watch the Protocol Trace, and them allow that B or C block.
time consuming? a bit (maybe not viable, depending on number of users), and I admittedly don't have that many IPs allowed, about 40 B & C blocks and static IPs.
of course if you have many, many users, this might be impractical. and keep in mind that aliases will no longer work, you must recreate them as distribution lists.
if users are consistently coming in from totally random IPs, then WM by itself will have to be an open relay. look to third party programs, or other mail server programs, that can authenticate SMTP traffic. other better informed members of this list (ther
e are many) will be able to give some suggestions. (and nice web site at atomicusa).

Just installed Norton AntiVirus for Gateways 2.5.
Doing a nice job, easy install and configure.
I had read in a previous message about someone using port 1025 for WM, and
(arbitrarily) tried that port to start. Didn't work. Finally tried port
1026, and WM gets it just fine. Just a heads up for those using Windows
2000 Server / IIS 5. I haven't done any serious research into what ports
are used/reserved for W2K server - anyone have a URL of a nice list?
My server has two physical network jacks (on one box) I can assign IPs.
Can I assign NAV to listen on 1.2.3.125 port 25 on network slot 2
and then send the mail to WM 1.2.3.5 port 25 on network slot 1?
Can you use the same port on different NICs/IPs on the same box?

I connect to my W2K box remotely via Terminal Services (running in remote
administration mode) - works great and MUCH faster than PCAnywhere.
I notice that the Protocol Trace does not work with terminal services - the
trace window remains blank.
(The only thing I can get to show up in TS are the tests, which in both
connections returns:

The freeware program VNC seems to me to be much faster than PCAnywhere. We
use it to manage our servers.
